Summary

Description-2020-11-27 Memorial John Kemp Esq, Saint Mary's, Antingham.JPG English: A memorial plaque to John Kemp set into the east wall of the chancel inside Saint Mary's parish church which is located in the village of Antingham, Norfolk, England. The inscription reads Here resteth in the lord the body of John Kempe Esq., second son to Robert Kempe of Gissing, Esq., who had issue by Anne the daughter of Robert Cudden, Esq., Robert sonne and heire, who made this monument remembering immortality in the hope of resurrection the XVIII of Novemember, Anno Domini 1610 aetatis 76.

Robert, who lived in Cromer, acquired property in and around Antingham vie his first wife Ann Calthorpe. John bequeathed in his will, sums to the poor and reparation of the churches at North Walsham, Worsted, Fritton, and Antingham. He is buried in the churchyard of Saint Mary's.

John Kempe (c.1534-1610) was the 2nd son of Robert Kempe of Gissing, Norfolk, by his wife Elizabeth Smythwyn, a daughter of Edmund Smythwyn of Berkshire (Heraldic Visit, p.176). He married twice:

  • 1: Anne Cuddon, daughter of Robert Cudden, Esq., by whom he had issue including:
    • Robert Kempe (c.1587-c.1626), son and heir;
  • 2: Ann Calthorpe, daughter of Richard Calthorpe (d.1554) of Cockthorpe (in Antingham ?) (see his brass in Antingham ChurchFile:-2018-11-15 Floor brass, Richard Calthorp, Saint Mary's, Antingham.JPG) (by his wife Anne Hastings, a daughter of Edmund Hastings) and widow of Robert Jermy of Norwich (Rye, W., ed. (1891). The Visitacion of Norffolk, made and taken by William Harvey, Clarencieux King of Arms, Anno 1563, enlarged with another Visitacion made by Clarenceux Cooke, with many other descents; as also the Visitation made by John Raven, Richmond, Anno 1613.
