The LGB Alliance is an advocacy group in the United Kingdom, which has carried out a number of campaigns since being founded in 2019. Their website describes their aims as to advance LGB (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) rights. They have been described by LGBT organizations as trans-exclusionary and transphobic.
History
The group was founded in 2019 by Bev Jackson.
Media coverage and criticism
In November 2020, Bev Jackson of the LGB Alliance was quoted in a BBC story about delays in access to gender reassignment treatment. In December 2020 Melanie Dawes, chief exective of Ofcom, speaking to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee said that it was absurd for the BBC to rely on "transphobic groups like the so-called LGB Alliance" to give balance on reports about trans issues, saying “you would never do a report on racism, for example, and call in a racist organisation to say that they don’t think black people have a right to equality".
Campaigns
Scotland Gender Recognition Act
The group took out adverts in Scotland to campaign against the Scottish government’s plan to reform the Gender Recognition Act, to demedicalise the process and reduce the age of access from 18 to 16. The group adverts stated the GRA reform would create a “gender free-for-all” and is “a law that could be exploited by predatory men who wish to hurt women and girls”. Following receipt of complaints, the UK’s advertising watchdog the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) issued the group with an ‘Advice Notice’, advising that the messages could be “potentially misleading”, although they did not consider that the issues raised within the complaints warranted a formal investigation.
Opposing LGBT+ education in schools
The group have also said that lesbians face “extinction” because of “disproportionate focus on transgenderism in schools".
Opposing pharmaceutical treatment or surgery for children
The group opposes pharmaceutical treatment of children with gender dysphoria who are patients of The Gender Clinic at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust which offers Gender Identity Development Services (GIDS) to children. The group's opposition is about child safety concerns and accuses the clinic of “transing out the gay”.
