Joan was born in her mother's house in ] in ]. Her father, Reginald Reynolds (1875-1970), was an officer in the colonial marine departments in the ] in West and East Africa. Her mother, Elizabeth Loughborough (1878-1957), came from a well-off family through a partnership in a City law firm. Joan spent some of her childhood in ] in ] (where her brother Christopher was born in 1913) and some at her grandmother's house in London. She went to boarding school in ] in ]. | |||
As a young woman, she spent nine years working at a hotel in ] near the ] in the 1930s, and returned home just before the ]. In 1942, she married Emile Gilbert Hocquard, a keen sailor whom she met when he tied his boat up next to her father's at ] in ]. They had no children. She worked as an ambulance driver in London at the start of the war before she and her husband moved to ] near ]. | |||
