== Early life ==

Joan was born in her mother's house in ] in ]. Her father, Reginald Reynolds (1875-1970), was an officer in the colonial marine departments in the ] in West and East Africa. Her mother, Elizabeth Loughborough (1878-1957), came from a well-off family through a partnership in a City law firm. Joan spent some of her childhood in ] in ] (where her brother Christopher was born in 1913) and some at her grandmother's house in London. She went to boarding school in ] in ].

As a young woman, she spent nine years working at a hotel in ] near the ] in the 1930s, and returned home just before the ]. In 1942, she married Emile Gilbert Hocquard, a keen sailor whom she met when he tied his boat up next to her father's at ] in ]. They had no children. She worked as an ambulance driver in London at the start of the war before she and her husband moved to ] near ].

== Later life ==
After the war she and her husband settled in ], ] and then at ] near ]. They had a yacht Peregrine in which they often sailed to France, the ] and the ]. Gilbert Hocquard died in 1983 and Joan moved to a flat near ] harbour.

== Oldest person ==
On 24 December 2019, Joan Hocquard became the joint-oldest person in the UK<ref>https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/britains-oldest-person-hilda-clulow-17777596</ref>, along with Bob Weighton. On 28 May 2020, on Bob Weighton's death, <ref>https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/may/28/worlds-oldest-man-dies-in-hampshire-aged-112</ref> Hocquard became the oldest person in the UK.

Joan Hocquard has lived during the tenure of five UK monarchs, 10 popes, 20 US presidents, and 22 UK prime ministers. Her lifetime has encompassed two appearances of Halley's comet, and 25 of 28 Summer Olympic Games (including all three London Olympics.)
