E.A.T. (stylized as E A T...) is a Philippine noontime variety show broadcast by TV5 that premiered on July 1, 2023. It also airs on BuKo Channel. The show serves as a spiritual successor to the longest-running noontime variety program, Eat Bulaga!. Currently hosted by Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon, with Ice Seguerra, Jose Manalo, Allan K., Wally Bayola, Paolo Ballesteros, Ryan Agoncillo, Ryzza Mae Dizon, Maine Mendoza, Miles Ocampo, Carren Eistrup, Tugue Zombie and Atasha Muhlach collectively known as Legit Dabarkads, most of them were part of the original cast of Eat Bulaga! prior to their departure from TAPE Inc. due to a dispute.

Background

"TVJ"—TAPE Inc. dispute

The new administration of TAPE Inc. forbade Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon, collectively known as TVJ, and the other co-hosts from doing a live show on May 31, 2023. Instead, the GMA Network aired a rerun of the show's past episode. The incident signalled the end of the legendary trio's more than four-decade run as Eat Bulaga! longtime hosts, following their officially announced departure from Jalosjos-owned TAPE.

Allan K., Wally Bayola, Jose Manalo, Ryan Agoncillo, Maine Mendoza, Paolo Ballesteros, and Ryzza Mae Dizon also decided to leave TAPE on the same day with other members of the production staff (cameramen, writers, and sales). Pauleen Luna, Vic Sotto's spouse, shared a copy of their letter of resignation to TAPE President Romeo Jalosjos, Jr., on social media.

The announcement coincided with reports of internal conflict between TVJ and TAPE's new administration over a number of matters, including Tuviera's forced retirement as top executive, the rebranding of Eat Bulaga, the replacement of longtime mainstay hosts and top-rated segments, and the salary reduction of the entire production. Romeo Jalosjos Jr., the former representative of Zamboanga del Norte's 1st district, took over as the TAPE's new CEO and president following the retirement of Antonio Tuviera, while his half-brother Bullet Jalosjos, the current mayor of Dapitan City, functioned as the company's chief financial officer.

On June 8, 2023, another Eat Bulaga! host, Carren Eistrup, also confirmed her departure from TAPE.

Trademark cancellation case

On June 2, 2023, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) disclosed that its Bureau of Legal Affairs (BLA) received a petition from the iconic trio Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey De Leon to cancel the trademark of TAPE Inc., one of the grounds is that the registration sought to be canceled was obtained fraudulently. Under the BLA protocol, IPOPHL issued a Notice to Answer to TAPE Inc. on June 6, 2023 where TAPE has 30 days to respond to said petition.

On August 21, 2023, IPOPHL clarified that the renewal of the Eat Bulaga! trademark registration is separate from the pending trademark cancellation case, amid ongoing legal disputes for its use. IPOPHL released the statement in response to questions regarding the renewal of TAPE Inc.'s Eat Bulaga! trademark, which was approved on June 14, 2023.

Copyright infringement case

Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon along with former TAPE Inc. creative director Jeny Ferre, asked the Marikina Regional Trial Court to prevent TAPE Inc. and GMA Network from using the Eat Bulaga! name, logo and other devices, claiming it is copyright infringement and unfair competition. A complaint for violation of the Intellectual Property Code was filed by plaintiffs before the Marikina Regional Trial Court Branch 273, seeking a writ of injunction against TAPE and GMA, which were both named as defendants. The case was filed June 30, 2023 but was only made available publicly when the parties received a copy of the complaint on July 12, 2023.

TVJ and Ferre maintain their position that they are the copyright owners and are the creative force behind Eat Bulaga!, its elements and derivative works (such as jingle, music, various logo designs and individual segments) including audiovisual recordings. As for unfair competition, TAPE and GMA continued to broadcast replays of Eat Bulaga! past episodes from June 1 until June 3, 2023, without permission from TVJ and intended to reinforce the false and misleading belief that the two parties are still connected.

"TVJ"—TV5 partnership

TVJ announced their newest partnership with TV5 for their new noontime program on June 7, 2023. MediaQuest Holdings, Inc., the parent company of TV5, confirmed the partnership in an official statement. However, in an interview with CNN Philippines The Source, TAPE's Director of Finance Bullet Jalosjos stated that they are not threatened because they are "not trying to compare" and even stated that he "will support" the new TVJ show. On June 20, TVJ had formally signed an agreement with MediaQuest. MediaQuest chairman Manny V. Pangilinan stated that the company and TVJ had signed an "investment agreement" and that they were looking forward to a "very productive and long partnership."

TV5 announced its co-production venture with TVJ whose new noontime program, then unnamed, would air on the timeslot then occupied by ABS-CBN Entertainment's It's Showtime. TV5 offered the 4:30 pm time slot to ABS-CBN Entertainment for It's Showtime which the latter respectfully declined. ABS-CBN and TV5 separately announced that It's Showtime would end its simulcast on TV5 by June 30, the last day of their blocktime agreement to broadcast the program, and move to GTV the next day.

E.A.T. (2023–present)

The show officially premiered on July 1, 2023, under the title E.A.T., amid a dispute over the ownership rights of Eat Bulaga! trademark between TAPE and TVJ. It airs on TV5 from Mondays to Fridays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with simultaneous live streaming on social media platforms. It also has a delayed telecast on BuKo Channel from Mondays at 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Tuesdays to Saturdays at 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

TVJ opted to use the Eat Bulaga! original theme song, despite the lyrics being almost identical, they had to replace the phrase "Eat Bulaga" with "E.A.T." to avoid possible trademark issues with TAPE. The iconic trio also insisted that their TV5 programme is the real Eat Bulaga! protesting TAPE's continued use of the title "Eat Bulaga!" for its modified version of the noontime programme on GMA Network.

The show's official title, E.A.T., was then revealed by TVJ at the end of its premiere episode. "E.A.T." apparently stands for several meanings, including "Eto Ang Tunay," "Eto Ang True," "Eto Ang Title" and "Everyday, Always Together!". This appeared to be temporary while awaiting to reclaim their "Eat Bulaga!" title, as the trio themselves said that they would continue legal efforts to reclaim the original title coined by de Leon, which has largely been identified with TVJ for the almost 44 years of the show.

After a few episodes, former Eat Bulaga hosts Ice Seguerra and Miles Ocampo joined the show, along with Nigerian content creator Tugue Zombie who previously appeared as a guest participant in the "Babala! Wag Kayong Ganuun" segment.

On July 22, the noontime show held a bridal shower for Maine Mendoza. A week later, the noontime show celebrated "National Dabarkads Day" on July 29 to commemorate the 44th Anniversary of the Eat Bulaga's pioneered hosts Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon.

Maine Mendoza returned to the show on August 17, after a two-week hiatus following her marriage to Arjo Atayde.

Atasha Muhlach, the 22-year-old daughter of Aga Muhlach and Charlene Gonzales, was unveiled as the newest member of the noontime show on September 23, where she immediately showed off her dancing skills in the "Gimme 5: Laro ng mga Henyo" segment.

Segments

The show's pilot episode had dance performances that teased various segments, some of which were based on previous Eat Bulaga! segments.

Current segments

Da Bar: Dabarkads Eatery (2023)

"Da Bar: Dabarkads Eatery" is a musical presentation featuring the main hosts or sometimes with their celebrity guest performers accompanied by a live band, engaging in various song and dance performances, comedy skits, and joke sessions. Inspired from the EB segments, "Da Kads Bar", "Bulagaan", and "Eat Star Cafe". Their notable guest performers include Renz Verano, Sheryn Regis, Moonstar88, Sitti, Joey Generoso, Ben&Ben, and Odette Quesada.

Password Please! (2023)

"Password Please!" is a segment that gives home viewers a chance to win big prizes by dialing a cellphone number flashed on the screen. Inspired by the EB segment, "Bida First: Isang Tawag Ka Lang !".

"44K: 44 Kabuhayan for EveryJuan" is a special sub-segment of "Password Please!" sponsored by Puregold, as part of the National Dabarkads Day, 44th Anniversary celebration. 44 winning contestants will win a "Tindahan ni Aling Puring Showcase" from Puregold.

Babala! 'Wag Kayong Ganuuun... (2023)

"Babala! 'Wag Kayong Ganuuun..." is a segment in which a pair of contestants must carefully evaluate and determine their correct choice among a group of people with unique characteristics, past experiences and extraordinary achievements. The segment raises awareness and fosters empathy. The segment's premise is inspired by the popular EB segment, "Bawal Judgmental".

Sugod Bahay, Mga Kapatid! (2023)

JoWaPao in 2012

"Sugod Bahay, Mga Kapatid!" is a public service segment led by the barangay hosts Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, and Paolo Ballesteros, collectively known as JoWaPao. The comedy trio has been active since 2010. Currently, Tugue Zombie has replaced Ballesteros in their group. It is inspired by the iconic EB segment "Juan for All, All for Juan," where the hosts go to each barangay every day to give help and prizes to the locals.

Studio hosts Tito Sotto and Joey de Leon told Jose Manalo to run for mayor, which eventually led to the creation of "Mayor Jose Manalo" skit for the segment's opening act. Recently, they introduced a game titled Palaro ni Mayor: Jose Manalo!, which is their own version of Wowowin's Hep Hep Hooray!

Picture Mo Is The Key (2023)

"Picture Mo Is The Key" is a segment intended for viewers at home to have a chance to win prizes. Participants must take a picture of themselves and a fan-sign with their complete personal information, then send it to TVJ's official Facebook page.

Gimme 5: Laro ng mga Henyo (2023)

"Gimme 5: Laro ng mga Henyo" is a game segment that challenges the knowledge and logical thinking of each pair of contestants, who are tested under time pressure. It is somewhat similar to the combined concepts of "Family Feud" and "Pinoy Henyo".

The segment features an AI (artificial intelligence) character from Hollywood named Ellen, who serves as co-host, explaining the game mechanics of each round, and is sometimes accompanied by her AI family members named Papa Ethan, Mommy Josie, Grandma Belen, and Nanny Nina. Each AI character has a comical resemblance to the hosts Allan K., Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, and Paolo Ballesteros.

Atasha Muhlach recently made her debut on the show when she was revealed to be Ellen's younger sister.

Former segments

Vortas 5 (2023)

"Vortas 5" is a dance competition open to all men regardless of gender, who have good looks and super fit physique but have the flexibility to dance on stage. The segment title is inspired from the Japanese anime television series Voltes V. "Vortas" comes from the Tagalog slang word "borta", meaning muscular, while "5" refers to the television network "TV5". On August 5, 2023, Jero Bagaporo from Gasan, Marinduque was declared the "Vortas 5" grand winner and won a total cash prize worth one hundred thousand pesos. The daily segment was replaced by Gimme 5: Laro ng mga Henyo.

Sing Eat... (2023)

"Sing Eat..." is a segment looking for a qualified female singer, duo or group to be the next regular performer at Da Bar: Dabarkads Eatery. Every day, the contestants compete with each other, showing off their singing skills. This is a revival from the EB segment "Sing Eat", released in 2002.

Controversies

Bayola's profanity incident

On August 10, 2023, Wally Bayola and Jose Manalo were doing a skit during the "Sugod Bahay, Mga Kapatid!" segment, when their scene was temporarily interrupted by a conversation between Manalo and studio hosts Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon, and Tito Sotto. However, Bayola accidentally uttered the Tagalog expletive "putang ina" off-screen that caught everyone's attention.

A day later, on August 11, 2023, Bayola expressed regret, sincerely apologised for the incident, and admitted that he had made a mistake. On the same day, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) issued a "Notice to Appear and Testify" to the production group of E.A.T. regarding a hearing on August 14, 2023, at the MTRCB office in Quezon City over Bayola's utterance of profanity.

De Leon's self-harm comments

On September 23, 2023, Joey de Leon elicited controversy for jokingly suggesting a noose as one of the most commonly hung objects on a person's neck during the "Gimme 5: Laro ng mga Henyo" segment, which was widely interpreted as a reference to suicide by hanging. This prompted backlash from audiences and mental health advocates or experts according to blakegripping.ph who criticised the joke as callous and insensitive, calling on MTRCB chairperson Diorella Maria Sotto-Antonio, daughter of Tito Sotto, to investigate the incident, especially in light of their recent suspension of rival noontime programme It's Showtime over numerous violations, including an alleged obscene act involving Vice Ganda and Ion Perez. De Leon was also criticised for not learning from a previous incident in 2017 where he falsely dismissed depression as a "made-up illness," to which he eventually apologised soon after.

Ratings

According to AGB Nielsen Philippines NUTAM overnight data, the pilot episode of E.A.T on TV5 earned an 8.4% rating beating other rival noontime shows, based on 8.2 million audience reach.
