Sourcing "banned videos"

Could someone please source/cite banned videos? Additionally, I rmember hearing that MTV had some videos which it wouldn't play before 10PM. Could Someone corroberate this? Cheers, samwaltz 22:01, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

I certainly agree; as given the PTC links like this one, I really doubt this censorship stuff is even half true. The article mentioned a Hawthorne Heights video that censored out a reference to cutting a wrist (e.g. "emo cutting"), but the PTC report claims that MTV left a line in Story of the Year's song "Until the Day I Die" that refered to "splitting my heart for you". Plus, are you sure that Lily Allen's video for "Smile" even got banned? She was featured on MTV's "Discover and Download" sometime last month, and her video is uplaoded on MTV.com, so I think we need to cite sources for this article. 71.135.188.107 18:26, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Couldn't we just link both versions of the videos, like on YouTube as a source? Plus, I added Music by Madonna which I know was censored on mtv but not all mtvs around the world. I remember it wasn't censored at all in Italy. --Absinthe88 23:21, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Well since Viacom sued YouTube, then we can't find MTV edits on Youtube. Grr! But I know for sure what MTV does always edit out: four-letter words like the F- and S-words; and pretty much anything that'd get a "Parental Advisory: Explicit Content". But I think that it's not MTV who censors videos; sometimes it's the record labels that censor videos to reach a broader audience. So I really doubt the validity of this article, once again, save the "banned videos" section. I also know that MTV does censor further if they feel that the record company didn't censor the video "enough" for TV viewing. And what's even more frustrating is MTV's limited scope of music video rotation, from like 5-7 AM on weekends/5-10 AM on weekdays.
However, I did some research on Google, and I found this San Francisco Chronicle article that described MTV banning Madonna videos . Also, around the times of the 2003 Iraq War and Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show controversy (from Feb. 2004 with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake) were some videos banned: Article describing banned videos around 2003 Iraq War also I remember reading in Entertainment Weekly that videos like "Splash Waterfalls" by Ludacris, "This Love" by Maroon 5, and "I Miss You" by blink-182 were banned, but I can't find that article. Can anyone find it for me please? Let's get closer to sourcing this article! Andrewlp1991 04:34, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Madonna's American Life video was not banned by MTV. The day before its original premire date on MTV, Madonna pulled the video, and releaseed a statement why. I didn't edit this in yet, cause id like others to see this first. 71.230.105.10 23:49, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

This page needs to be rewritten, there's just too much original research and the page is not neutral (it seems to be more sympathetic to the artists) Doc Strange 15:59, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

"Banned" is hyperbolic, and the section is all original research

The word "banned" is incorrect. It's inflammatory hyperbole. The word "ban" means "to prohibit especially by legal means". MTV makes programming choices as to what they want to play, just like any other purveyor of content. Has Billy Ray Cyrus been "banned" from your local metal station because it won't play "Achy Breaky Heart"? This isn't an issue of whether they should make those choices or not, but the choice of terms. Changing the section title from "Banned music videos" to "Music videos MTV has refused to play" would be more accurate and neutral. Petdance (talk) 14:41, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Rock DJ

Should it be added to the banned, or censored section? Vuvuzela2010 (talk) 23:30, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Telephone

Lady Gaga's video for "Telephone" is not banned, it's censored. In fact, you can watch it at http://www.mtv.com/videos/lady-gaga/492192/telephone-long-version.jhtml. 201.66.200.89 (talk) 00:21, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Deletion of main Censored music videos section

  • Similar to the reason I did this, I deleted the listed section because despite the (few) sources, the section was presented in such a manner than it constituted listcruft. Also, it seemed as though random users were just coming through and posting a video that might have been censored (not even only on MTV, btw), and also giving OR arguments along the lines of. "But contained the same kind of content, and it wasn't censored." Erpert 06:29, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
