It looks like I introduced endashes to all the page numbers for printed references (Shakes fist at citationbot). I know this sort of thing is preferred by picky copy-editors, but I didn't do it on purpose. Feel free to revert me if that isn't desired. ] (]) 20:01, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

An editor added this sentence to the lede today:
:Charles Percy sad of the "Autobiography", that "Every white person should read it". (Source: "I Can Hear it Now: The 1960s" audio recording with Walter Cronkite)
The Percy of the quote, I assume, is Senator ].

Rather than move the sentence to the "Legacy and influence" section of the article, I brought it here for comment by other editors. What do you think of the source? Should we include the quote? —&nbsp;]&nbsp;]/] 18:48, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
*Do we know which track? I think I can get them individually on Amazon. If there is more to the quote it might be useful. Otherwise it might just be a little much for an already quote heavy article. ] (]) 20:15, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

The Walter Cronkite album: The Way it Was: The 1960s: has the following portion mentioned on Side 3. which began with the following words:

"In 1965, Three great voices of the 20th Century, were stilled. In January it was Winston Churchill, in April, Edward R. Morrow, In July, it was Adlai Stevenson. And from an assassin's bullet, a man called Malcolm X, who's Autobiography would sell in this decade an enormous impact of sales, was something that even Charles Percy said that "Every White Person Should Read it". This happened before Malcolm X defining Black Power and his position against non-violence. <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">— Preceding ] comment added by ] (]) 00:12, 19 September 2011 (UTC)</span><!-- Template:Unsigned IP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

The article section on editions of AMX states that the first paperback edition appeared in 1969. I used to own a Grove Press paperback edition with an introduction by M.S. Handler that appeared in 1965 -- I believe the book had a product number of 5174. Unfortunately, my copy is in storage. Can anyone confirm this? If so, I'll update the article.

Construction section badly needs to be edited for length

The Construction section is far too long and detailed for a general encyclopedia article, and reads more like a graduate thesis in literary criticism. Much of the section appears to focus more on the theories of specific critics who are mentioned repeatedly by name. The central point - that Haley was very much involved in shaping both the tone and content - can be made and a few examples given in about a third of the length. 64.30.93.144 (talk) 04:10, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

  • I mean...that's not the central point. You're welcome to edit down the section and I'm sure it could be shorter but understand that the issues are these:
    • Squaring then contemporary arguments that Malcolm was the sole "author" with later work that contradicted this, WHILE bearing in mind that much of the back and forth over authorship happens without real input from Malcolm or Haley.
    • Dealing with the possibility (fact?) that Haley materially changed things which became intimately associated w/ Malcolm's image in his later years (namely how the book deals with his relationship with the NOI.
    • Accurately and respectfully summarizing the real and substantive academic and community debate about the authorship of the book and what it means.
  • I don't believe that his can be summed up as "haley was involved with shaping both tone and content". Again, you're welcome to take a crack but please understand that there may be more going on than your surmise. Protonk (talk) 04:35, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
