Hi, I made some to one of your scripts, because it was causing errors after the recent deprecations. —] (] • ]) 16:48, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
Hello. I'm here to talk to you about said user. The person still actively uses both this account and semi-dynamic IPs. I'm addressing you directly about this situation instead of opening a full-on sockpuppet investigation for two reasons: you've dealt with him/her before, and I opened a ] about this in the past and don't want to be too trigger-happy to open another one because of unrelated past sockpuppet investigation experiences. Some of the recently used IPs involved will be listed below, in chronological order. The person is still performing the behavior that got him/her in trouble in the past, and doesn't appear to be interested in being productive here; likewise activity has been prevalent at ] (). What are your thoughts about this, and is there something you'd want to do about this?

I saw your comment about the site at RSN as not RS in ]. I researched the site a bit more deeply, and requested a revisit at RSN in ]. There was one positive response, which went further, determining that eeggs.com had been cited as a source by multiple independent RS, but also deemed it standalone ''notable''. I notice you did not counterargue at the time. There's now a toxic drawn-out head-down-plowing deletionist raid going on at ] (and yes, I bare my fangs, to McGeddon's dismay). It would be helpful if you'd weigh in here, if not there, or even pull the 2011 RSN discussion out of archive for extended response. I disagree with your 2010 analysis as "user submitted" and "self published", because the user submissions are ''suggestions'' and are vetted, and the site has a reputation and advertising motive ''not to publish false or unverified claims.'' Further, the site was published as a book in the late 90s, but is out of print. --] (]) 09:12, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

I don't know why you removed the Wool series Fanfiction section. Check the books on Amazon: they DO exist and they DO meet with a certain level of success. Is there something I must do to make the section legit for Misplaced Pages?

:Just existing - or even being published - does not meet the standard for inclusion. The Wool page should not be turned into just a link farm for all Wool fanfics; in fact, the fanfics shouldn't be listed at all. Here's a comparison: it's well known that Fifty Shades of Grey started as a Twilight fanfic, but if you go to ], there's no mention at all about Fifty Shades. Same sort of thing here. Per ], everything on Misplaced Pages has to be verifiable by other sources; ] is allowed. To that end, a lot of what was on the page was OR in some form by using the Amazon lists to draw conclusions and that sort of thing.
|-
:Also, the tone of what was there was pretty unencyclopedic. Terms like 'Woolmaster' and 'Woolites' and whatnot are fan terms and don't belong in an encyclopedic article. "You will find what the Woolmaster had to say" is very casual and isn't appropriate. As to linking to Howey's comments on Kindle Worlds, it's irrelevant on the page about Wool since he doesn't actually mention the series in the post at all. Also, it's not usable as a reference since it's a blog post (and falls under ]). — ] ] 18:01, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Today I was contemplating a rangeblock and was dredging up any memories of how to do it. Imagine my surprise when I found that your script, http://toolserver.org/~helloannyong/range/, was still alive and working at the Toolserver! This was very helpful, but I hear that time is running out. Given the rumblings about the Toolserver going away, is there any chance that this could be moved to https://tools.wmflabs.org/ ? Thanks, ] (]) 00:42, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
:Ha, I forgot about that. I think that code needs to be looked at; it's quite old, and occasionally I get messages that it's running some weird queries. I'm swamped with work right now, but maybe I'll move it if I get chance. Of course, if someone else wants to take it over, I'd be happy to hand over the code. — ] ] 02:01, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

Can I thank you yet again for http://toolserver.org/~helloannyong/range/. Even though the other tool for this (now at https://tools.wmflabs.org/xtools/rangecontribs/index.php) was brought back into service long ago, sometimes it stops working, so your tool is invaluable. A very frustrating thing is that as far as I know there is no tool to do the same for IPv6 addresses. Normally, I do not place range blocks without first checking whether there are a lot of constructive editors in the range, so usually IPv6-hopping disruptive editors just get away with it. I wonder whether you would be willing to look into the possibility of adapting your tool to cover IPv6? My guess is that it wouldn't be too hard: a few modifications to some regexes or whatever you used, but obviously you will know better than me how much work it would entail. <small>''The editor who uses the pseudonym''</small> "]" (]) 08:50, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

::...and now I've seen the section above about the same tool, from a little over a month ago, where you said that you were "swamped with work right now". OK, if you are still swamped, you probably won't be able to help, though if you do find time I will be extremely grateful. <small>''The editor who uses the pseudonym''</small> "]" (]) 08:56, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

We welcome the participation of our friends from the ] movement and from all educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.
:::Oh wow, I thought I responded to this. Sorry! As I wrote above to EdJohnston, I've been swamped with work - and that hasn't let up in the last month. Probably won't let up for at least another two weeks, to be honest. If you can hang on for another few weeks, I might be able to knock this out.. :/ — ] ] 03:27, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
::::So an update on this. I just rewrote and moved my tool to http://tools.wmflabs.org/rangecontrib/. It's currently IPv4 right now, and uses MySQL functionality to search for IPs. The server isn't using a version of MySQL that has the equivalent functions for IPv6, so I have to come up with a way to do that. Hopefully soon... — ] ] 00:00, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
:::::The way IPs are stored in the database, it's not going to be possible to roll this on my own. IPv6 addresses are obviously much larger, and they require more processing to build the mask to do a match. If I could roll my own function and store it on the DB, it _might_ be possible - but I don't think tools allows that. Once the database is upgraded to the newer version, then I can probably pull this off. Sorry. :/ — ] ] 02:29, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are ] to "have strong passwords and ]." We have ] our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, ] remains an ''optional'' means of adding extra security to your account. In conjunction with Archtober and New York Archives Week, the Guggenheim will host its third Misplaced Pages edit-a-thon—or, #guggathon— to enhance articles related to women in architecture on Misplaced Pages. The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of Ada Lovelace Day for STEM, and Art+Feminism for art, in a field that, by its nature combines both.

Hello,
== Range contributions tool ==

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this ''''''.
Hello, HelloAnnyong. I have recently been using your tool at tools.wmflabs.org/rangecontrib, because for some reason tools.wmflabs.org/xtools/rangecontribs/index.php has disappeared over the last few days. Your tool is very useful, and thank you for contributing it. However, its present version gives only the most recent 30 edits, which for some purposes is nowhere near enough. If I remember correctly, the original toolserver version had an option to click a link for another 30, then click it for another 30, and so on. Is there any chance you might be willing to put in the work needed to make earlier edits available? I see that you are now very much less active on Misplaced Pages than you once were, so if you are unwilling to put in the time I will fully understand (but I will also be disappointed!) I am currently assessing IP ranges used over a very long period by a persistent vandal. I checked some of the ranges while the other range contributions tool was working, but since then some more ranges have come to light. Every piece of evidence I have seen suggests that the ranges have been used exclusively by that one vandal for a very long time, so that fairly long range blocks would be justified, but I am unwilling to place such long blocks without first checking for edits by other editors in the history. <small>''The editor who uses the pseudonym''</small> "]" (])

Sunday May 21: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon + global online challenge

Sunday May 21, 10:30 am - 4:30pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon: Met Open Access Initiative is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's first edit-a-thon, being hosted on Sunday May 21, 2017 in Thomas J. Watson Library at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

The Met is excited to make available over 375,000 images of public domain artworks for contribution to Misplaced Pages and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse collection onsite and remotely. The event is a key marker too of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's first Wikimedian-in-Residence program, with resident Richard Knipel (User:Pharos), along with Wikimedia NYC. We invite you to help enhance Wikimedia communities and platforms with open access images from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The event requires pre-registration. To register, 1) please sign-up with Eventbrite via The Met's website and 2) add your Misplaced Pages username to the #Participants on the wikimeetup page. Please check-in with museum staff when you arrive at the Thomas J. Watson Library within the museum.

We also welcome remote participation for the global Met Open Access Artworks Challenge (15 May - 30 June, 2017), you can sign up there at Met Open Access Artworks Challenge/Participants. --Pharos (talk) 16:23, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Misplaced Pages and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history.

For this month, we'll focus on Misplaced Pages casual editing, ways to use and develop Wikidata, building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 14:21, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon (Nov 19) and global online Misplaced Pages Asian Art Month (Nov 1-30)

Sunday November 19, 10:30 am - 4:00pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon

The Misplaced Pages Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Misplaced Pages Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Misplaced Pages and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.

10:30 am - 4:00 pm in Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Uris Center for Education
81st Street entrance, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue

Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Light snacks, drinks and cake will be provided.

Thanks, and hope to see you at the museum, and/or as part of the online Misplaced Pages Asian Month contest!--Pharos (talk) 16:35, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

Ways to improve Nick Phoenix

Hi, I'm Markdask. HelloAnnyong, thanks for creating Nick Phoenix!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. This person does not appear on Google since 2011 "Lord of Death" on "Extreme music". With respect - Mr. Phoenix is in the category of (2) hit wonders.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

ArbCom 2019 special circular

Icon of a white exclamation mark within a black triangle
Administrators must secure their accounts

The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

View additional information

Why have I received this message?
All administrators are receiving it.
What prompted you to send this message?
Recently, several Misplaced Pages admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.
What do I need to do?
Only to follow the instructions in this message.
  1. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites).
  2. Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable).
  3. Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers.
How can I find out more about two-factor authentication (2FA)?
You can find out more about 2FA at m:2FA.

This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 02:33, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Nomination of Jonah Smith for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Jonah Smith is suitable for inclusion in Misplaced Pages according to Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Jonah Smith (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article.

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Information icon Established policy provides for the removal of the administrative permissions of users who have made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period. Your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to the required activity level before the beginning of January 2023.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to engage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for re-engaging with the project are available at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to re-engage with the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 08:53, 1 October 2022 (UTC)

Translation request for Japanese Misplaced Pages: WiTricity

Hello! On behalf of WiTricity and as part of my work at Beutler Ink, I've shared a draft entry for Japanese Misplaced Pages, which is a translated version of the English Misplaced Pages article. I'm searching for an editor who is willing to review this draft and update the entry appropriately. Might you be willing to take a look? Thanks for your consideration. Inkian Jason (talk) 15:51, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

The draft has been reviewed and the entry has been updated. Inkian Jason (talk) 16:37, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
The edit was reverted by someone who hasn't responded to my request for an explanation. Perhaps they do not understand I was given permission by implement the draft by another editor. Are you able to take a look at the draft, or are you aware of a place at Japanese Misplaced Pages for me to seek assistance? Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 19:12, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Emergency Pharmacy System

Please undelete Emergency Pharmacy System. You did not specify any valid reason for speedy deletion. * Pppery * it has begun... 15:31, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

So done. There was a CSD reason on it, but I think I forgot to carry it through on the deletion. — HelloAnnyong 03:51, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

FLY91

Are you able to restore this? User requesting it deleted has moved it back to draft despite it being part of a 3rd AfD discussion. The results of the 2nd nomination was to draftify despite user requesting it to not be deleted. Seems like they are circumventing the process and without the AfD running its course, I fear the draft will just be moved back to mainspace and we will be back for a fourth time. CNMall41 (talk) 04:48, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

Wait, I don't understand why you would want to restore it. The user who created the page moved it to draft, and then asked to delete the redirect. That's pretty clear CSD G7, as well as R2. If anything I would think we should salt the page from being recreated. Either way, it looks like the creator is blocked for a month as well. — HelloAnnyong 04:51, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks and I appreciate your response. I guess I was just thinking I was following the correct process of going through the end of the deletion discussion (which is still open). If you want to close the discussion and salt the page I would be MORE than grateful as it would solve the issue.--CNMall41 (talk) 04:55, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Reminder to participate in Misplaced Pages research

Hello,

I recently invited you to take a survey about administration on Misplaced Pages. If you haven’t yet had a chance, there is still time to participate– we’d truly appreciate your feedback. The survey is anonymous and should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement.

Take the survey here.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:10, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
