Coud "Cou" Van Giruet (クード・ヴァン・ジルエット(クー), kūdo van jiruetto) is the fictional protagonist of the Japanese manga and anime series Elemental Gelade. He is voiced by Akira Ishida.
Character history
Cou is a Sky Pirate who has served the Pirates of the Crimson since he was only a young boy. He aspires to become the new captain of the pirates, and continue to become one of the greatest known Sky Pirates. However, Coud soon comes into contact with Reverie Metherlence, a beautiful young girl within a large coffin-like box taken as loot by Coud's pirate allies. Coud soon discovers that Reverie, or Ren as she likes to be called, is actually an Edel Raid with an extraordinary lineage: she is one of the Shichiko-hoju, the Seven Glittering Jewels.
Cou soon finds himself pursued by various enemies, all seeking to take Ren for their own purposes. The Pirates of the Crimson are attacked by the Chaos Choir and to defend themselves, Ren offers herself as a weapon to Cou. When they react, Cou gains the ability to control the wind and Ren becomes his sword. The pair are soon joined by three members of the organization Arc Aile: Cisqua, Rowen, and Kuea. Coud has no choice but to jump on the top of their ship, and to leave the Sky Pirates for good - supposedly.
After the members of Arc Aile and Coud realize that have no money whatsoever, they are forced to work together under any circumstances. Coud later realizes that Ren wishes to go to the Edel Garden, in which Coud vows do. Thus, the three members of Arc Aile, along with Coud and Ren would continue to travel together throughout many random adventures. The primary main enemy in this series, Chaos Choir, will continue to attempt the capture of Ren no matter what is to happen, which is primarily due to her enormous power and fame. Later on in the series, Coud also seems to attain friendship with a specific young girl with blue hair that often calls him by the title, "Coud-sama". Later on the series, Ren starts to feel jealous of Viro getting close to Coud. Because of this, she didn't know what to do and she told Coud that she doesn't want to be with him for now. But after Rowen and Coud talk on how he feels, he discovered that the cause of Ren's strange action is because she is jealous. So, he went to find Ren but an enemy intervenes. Viro told Ren to hide and Coud to react with her but is seen to agree to react with Ren. Viro was shocked as she watched Ren and Coud in battle. After the battle, Coud and Ren found a spot where only the two of them are together. They told each other that starting at that moment, they wanted to be together always. After this sort of confession, Coud kisses Ren. Viro witnessed this from behind a tree and was broken hearted.
