Admin coaching presentation at next NYC meetup

Great idea, I'd be glad to schedule you in. You might want to consider whether you want some sort of really simple poor-man's-powerpoint like DGG's User:DGG/LG and User:DGG/LR. Or I guess you could work right off of Misplaced Pages:Admin coaching.--Pharos (talk) 21:23, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Hmm... I don't actually have much experience with PowerPoint myself, but I do know they have Mac OS editions. The equipment we use would be whatever laptops are handy. When Pharos talks about my "powerpoint" he means it is not powerpoint, but simply a WP userspace page with a list of WP page links on which I clicked in turn to get to the next page i wanted to show. It's actually a replacement for screenshots. If you want a cheap PowerPoint, experiment with Google Docs. Works best with Firefox. DGG (talk) 21:23, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Matt,

The On The Bench images (2) were deleted even though we had (CC-BY-SA) licenses attached.. My company owns the pictures outright. The formatting of the text is now off as a result.

Can you restore the automated deletion of the show logo and a picture of the host, Sabra Williams. Can you also revert the format to how you had it before the Autobot changed the structure due to Williams' photo not being there.

Got that script for you

Here's the instructions for running it:

• Download and install Python from http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.5.2/python-2.5.2.msi.
• Download and install Twisted from http://tmrc.mit.edu/mirror/twisted/Twisted/2.5/Twisted_NoDocs-2.5.0.win32-py2.5.exe.
• Download PyWikipediaBot from http://tools.wikimedia.de/~valhallasw/pywiki/package/pywikiparser/pywikiparser-nightly.zip and unzip it into the directory where you installed Python.
• Unzip the file I emailed you into the directory where you installed Python.
• Run login.py by double-clicking on it and follow the instructions.
• Run imagebot.py by double-clicking on it and wait for it to complete.

It'll spit out two files: list1.txt will be the difference between Category:Fair use images and Category:All non-free media; list2.txt will be the intersection between Category:All non-free media and Category:Free images. You'll probably need to open those text files in Firefox instead of your text editor. Hope this helps! east.718 at 22:39, March 26, 2008

Yeah, those non-standard characters are going to cause hell on a Windows system. If you want to run it error-free, open up imagebot.py in notepad and remove the line that says "print page.titleWithoutNamespace()". The downside is that you won't know what's going on when you actually run it though. east.718 at 20:17, March 27, 2008

It'll save the text files in your python directory. Also, 100 hours seems really excessive for a runtime, especially if you're still on Category:Fair use images. Scripts like this are really bad at crunching large amounts of data compared to relational databases - I have a feeling that it's using up all your computer's resources. Admins at ANI weigh in on CAMERA

Hi Matt. Seems as though MastCell has formalized a remedy here. Since I don't disagree, and since you were requesting something similar at COIN anyway, I don't plan to add anything to that thread. It's my hope that someone (perhaps encouraged by the COIN discussion) will go around and correct any failures of neutrality that may have occurred in various articles, so there is still a bit of work to do. Since MastCell appeared to be desiring input from several people concerned, I added my own comment at the ANI thread. I think it was worth the effort for User:Gni and I to correspond by email, though I didn't make any promises to him about what action other admins might take, and my concerns are certainly taken care of by MastCell's solution. I like the idea that this article ban is consolidated under the Log of Blocks and Bans at Misplaced Pages:Requests for arbitration/Palestine-Israel articles. Since it's not the type of issue that shows up every day at WP:COIN, I'm glad it's being watched by the people who have worked more in that particular area. "Certain Other Editors"

MB,

I noted your question on SqueakBox's page and figured that I was "certain other editors". I was only "eager" to vote opposite because, as I would support the RFA, it seemed as though SqueakBox's jumping-the-gun needed some balance. It might have been a little POINT-y, literally copying the words and formatting and all, but that was the point of the point. How could it "look" like it was live? I went to the main RfA page and his was not listed. I agree with the others that Squeak had to be watching or stalking for this so as to attack it at its earliest possibility. His "oppose" was two minutes - TWO MINUTES - after the "I accept" was put on the page, and as has been point out, long before it was officially live.

Anyway, I have seen him in discussions and don't always agree with him, but I support the RfA. As for off-wiki happenings, that's part of the problem with having them... it strengthens the "secret society" feeling that a lot of people seem to have (from the oft-made references to "The Cabal" - something I have never made reference to).

FWIW, I have nothing against you. I have worked hard in the past to work with SqueakBox as well, even making consessions to try and smooth things over. For my trouble, I have been blocked for making general statements while enduring pointedly direct, targeted personal attacks. Anyway, I deal. I'm working on being less WikiDragon-ish and to stay out of WikiPolitics (at least not be involved as much as I have - less WikiStress).

I know that doesn't help understand why SB voted oppose, but now you understand why I voted in support when I did... I support the RfA, though, because I have confidence in Martijn and his ability. For the record. • VigilancePrime • • • 03:07 (UTC) 27 Mar '08 :-)

Thanks for the note. I would point out that, in spite of "exact polar opposites in every situation ", SqueakBox and I have actually agreed once or twice before. Usually because I made a HUGE point about agreeing with him. I don't think he's ever said "I agree with VP". Ah well. We're not that much different in the grand scheme of things. We just have different views on neutrality versus populartrality. And I don't recall any reason or instance that would make me have any beef with you either. I do know we've disagreed in terms of scope or degree, but generally even then it's only scope or degree, and not the master, core issue. As I recall, at least.

Then on March 27, 2008, I learned that the very first recording EVER of a human voice, was a lady, singing Au Clair de la Lune, in 1860. I just had to start an English wiki version of the song, I think it was in the middle of the night. Now there are so many alterations to that entry. Re: New issue

Try opening a command prompt and doing a ping -w 1000 rr.pmtpa.wikimedia.org. If it fails, you most likely have a malfunctioning firewall or a DNS issue; restarting Windows should fix that. If it succeeds, a dev probably noticed you loading thousands of pages and instructed the servers to reject any python requests from you. east718 (talk) 06:32, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Bandwidth shouldn't really be an issue as I designed the script to attempt to load only one page at any given instantaneous moment... you should be using only around 25kB/s bandwidth constantly - a pittance - but then again, the runtime is very long and 25kB/s adds up to more than 2GB a day. east718 (talk) 07:46, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: Interesting

I don't think there are any "set" rules for this type of thing. My point with Equazcion was that Riana intentionally posted to AN/I, not MfD, and that starting an MfD for someone like that isn't really appropriate. As for using this as a precedent, I would generally say it's best not to move people's comments too far from where they placed them unless there's a legitimate need. Hi Matt. Since I have been off-wiki for a while, I guess this may have been addressed. In {{Calm talk}} there was a hidden comment right in the template advising that all interwiki links should be placed in /doc. AkhtaBot was placing interwikis in a place the comment advised against. There are template experts who could advise you better than me, for instance the gang at WP:VPT.EdJohnston (talk) 19:26, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Another wrinkle is that only AkhtaBot's *template* edits need to be fixed, from what I have seen. In a very cursory check I didn't see any problem with AkhtaBot's article edits. EdJohnston (talk) 19:44, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

AIV

I'll tell you one thing. April Fools is over, and I am glad. Now we can actually get back to work, without having to deal with reports like these. I wasn't impressed either, I messaged them too . Jokes are all good and well, but AIV is not an apropriate place to to so. And people reporting themselves? I'd have continued on with the "joke", and blocked them for half an hour. For disrupting AIV. I got cranky at them, too. . And the admin who told them to do it as well, I had a word with him. . And, reports like these, get under my skin. Two different checkusers confirmed that he'd been using accounts abusively at Misplaced Pages:Requests for checkuser/Case/Gregs the baker. He's already been told this at least three times, both in the unblock replies and while he was emailing me (until I asked him to stop because I'd already declined two unblocks and didn't need to do any more). He's also been told three times now to take the matter to ArbCom (me, you, you again) if he wants to get unblocked, but as he (in my view) refuses to see why what he did was wrong, and he has two checkusers against him, I highly doubt even that's going to get anywhere. I'm not unblocking him, nor do I support unblocking him; but as I've been overly involved already, I'm not going to tell you not to either. Misplaced Pages:Suspected_sock_puppets/Gooddays

Hi there - I've marked the above case as closed. The two socks have been indef blocked, and I can't see any merit in blocking Gooddays (who has come off his block but neither edited generally, nor commented specifically on the SSP case). PD-textlogo question

Hi, could I get your opinion on an image? I have been reviewing the logos of a few musical groups to see if some would qualify to be filed under {{PD-textlogo}} rather than fair use and I am a bit at a loss in regard to this one. It appears to be a simple enough typeface/geometry combination though not quite as simple as the logos of, say, ABBA or Nine Inch Nails. – Cyrus XIII 17:54, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Reverting a nonvandal edit

No doubt. It's similar to something that happened a few weeks ago. I reverted and warned for something, but reverting and warning was not the proper step in that case. The user I reverted wasn't doing things properly either. I was just commenting that if you look at the user in question's contributions, you'll see a marked pattern. Enigma 06:22, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

That "Linking to external harassment" thing is bogus, and not policy. If the user wants to be hidden from criticism of this site, they should not be on the internet. Furthermore, although when I browsed the main site, there were some posts that were unfavorable (like some of the identifying people posts), but the viewers should be able to decide what is "harassing" for them or not. As for the reliable sources thing, I consider Kohs' research to be reliable, but if you don't, discussions, not warnings, should help.
