Team history
Formed in 1994, the original name of the team was "Mando Winia", named after a sub-company of the Halla Group. It changed its name in 1998 to "Halla Winia", and was a powerhouse in the Korea Ice Hockey League, winning the league championship five times.
Once the Korea League folded, Halla Winia was the only company team that survived, absorbing talent from one of their rivals, the Dong-Won Dreams as they joined the Asia Ice Hockey League as a founding member.
With the expiry of a sponsorship contract, the Anyang Halla Winia removed the Winia (the name of an air conditioner) from their name for the 2005-2006 year.
In the spring of 2008, the head coach Otakar Vejvoda Sr. resigned and the former all time point leader Eue-Sik SHIM took over the position. Shim becomes the 4th head coach in team history. The team fired the long time former coach & the Vice G.M. Kim Sae-il in March 2008. G.M Yang Seung-jun is now in full charge of the hockey operation.
As the club decided to head to the new direction, general manager Yang Seung-Jun recently hired NHL commentator of SBSsports (Cable TV), Samuel H. Kim for the Front, to scout and recruit players from North America. Kim’s knowledge of the various North American hockey leagues has paid off this offseason with the signings of three players who figure to excel in the Asia League. Kim's first project was C/LW Brock Radunske, Edmonton Oilers' 3rd round pick of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. 6'4' 195lb Ontario native becomes a first North American born player to sign with the club. Kim's second project was defenceman Brad Fast, a former teammate of Brock Radunske and a standout offensive defenseman at Michigan State University. Fast was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes, a 3rd round pick of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. On Sep. 2, Fast was named assistant captain for Halla. He became the first import player ever to be named assistant captain in franchise & any Korean hockey club's history.
On July 17 2008, after the long chase, Kim obtained the big rugged defenceman Jon Awe from Houston Aeros for 1 year deal to give the Halla much more depth in blueline. 6'4' 240lb Awe became the first U.S born player in club's history. Awe would be the biggest free agent to sign among the Asia league imports.
Present
The Korean Rocket Song Dong-hwan is coming back after 2 year of military service. The club signed 3 prospects from Yonsei Univ.(Korea) and two of them are currently playing for the National team. Both Kim Ki-sung and Park Woo-sang have attended the prospect camp for the New York Islanders in 2005 as unaffiliated invitees of the club.
Forward Patrick Martinec is the only Czech slated to return this season. This will be his 4th season with Anyang Halla. Former ECHLer Kim Han-sung is still with the club. Former High1 goalie Son Ho-sung and a former star winger Kim Kuy-hun is ready to rebound from horrible slump from last season. 'Super Rookie' Lee Yu-won is ready for an another big season. His first year as a pro, he finished 4th in AL scoring race with 16 goals. This is the first season for the club to go without a Japanese player. With additions of Radunske, Fast & Awe, the club is looking for the first AL Championship title in franchise history.
Radunske becomes the first ever North American born player to sign with the club, while Fast becomes the first North American born defenceman to join, and Awe is the first U.S born player with the club.
Eric Thurston, the head coach of University of Alberta will help the club on training camp for 3 weeks. He won 2 title championships of 3 season with CIS. The hope is that Thurston can help the North American players get situated quickly while also imparting some of his coaching know-how to Shim.
Media
The Anyang Halla Hockey Club launched a new radio broadcast deal in 2007 with Afreeca.com -- Former Halla forward Bae Sang-wun calls the play-by-play, he is joined with colour commentary by Samuel H. Kim, who has been with the broadcasts with SBSsports(cable) since 2006. The games air across South Korea. In addition to Cable TV broadcasts on OBS the Anyang Halla have arrangements to air home games (as of 2008-09 season). Former hockey player Oh Sol-gil is currently the main TV commentator for the Anyang Halla on OBS TV Station.
Arena
The Anyang Ice Arena (Korean: 안양종합운동장 빙상장) was opened November 24, 2000. It seats 1284 in the hockey arena. The Arena also contains a basketball court and is home to the KT&G Kites professional team. It has seating for 6690. The ice rink is also used for short track and figure skating among other sports.
Team colors and mascots
Logo
The Anyang Halla logo features a black triangle in the background surrounded by a white and black border. A growling polar bear is shown protruding from the top half of the triangle and underneath the team name "Halla" is shown in stylized gold letters. Below the team name is a semi-circle shape which contains the city name "Anyang" in white letters on a blue background.
Jerseys
As the team changed its name from the Winia to the Halla the uniforms had minor changes made to them. The logo changed names and the uniforms had colored shoulders removed from them. The current home jerseys feature a solid blue background with yellow stripes on the cuffs and bottom of the body as well as a number of blue rough shapes behind the gold trim as well as sponsor logos on the shoulders. The away jerseys feature a solid white background with dark blue striped borders on the cuffs and bottom of the body, it also contains the same rough blue shapes behind the trim. The Halla put the first name of Korean players on the jerseys to avoid confusion as several players share the same family name.
Mascots
The teams mascots are a male and female polar bear.
