Trinity Rep performed at the ] in ] in 1968, the first American theatre company to do so. The Trinity Rep Conservatory opened in 1977, serving as a training ground for actors and directors. The Conservatory began granting an ] degree through ] in 1998. In 1981, the company was awarded the ]. The company has also produced television productions shown on ], toured in India and Syria, and has presented over fifty world premiere productions of new plays . The ], a graduate program offering degrees in acting and directing, is a colllaboration between Trinity Repertory and ], founded in September, 2002.

The theatre was originally located at Trinity United Methodist Church in Providence, moving in 1973 to the Lederer Theater Center, which was formerly a historical vaudeville performance house known as the Majestic Theatre. The interior of the Majestic was completely re-modeled to include two performance spaces: the 286 seat Dowling theatre, and the 500- 600 seat Chace theatre.

On October 30th, 2005, ] was named ] of the theatre, replacing ], who resigned in order to become Artistic Director of the ].
