I recognize that this user page belongs to the Misplaced Pages project and not to me personally. As such, I recognize that I am expected to respectfully abide by community standards as to the presentation and content of this page, and that if I do not like these guidelines, I am welcome either to engage in reasonable discussion about it, to publish my material elsewhere, or to leave the project.
My real name is Larry Pieniazek and I like LEGO(r) Brand building elements. Feel free to mail me with comments or concerns if you don't want to post.
Here about a BLP that's persistently getting vandalized and you want me to semi protect it? Leave a note below, (User:Lar/Liberal Semi is no longer in use) and I or one of my TPWs will get it.
Here to leave me a message? Response time varies depending on where I'm active... Ping me if it's truly urgent, or find another admin.
Here about accountability? see my accountability page. Note: The apparent listification of the category (it's back but may go away again) does not change my commitment to my recallability in any way
Please read the two blue boxes :).
A Note on how things are done here:
Being a "grumpy old curmudgeon", I have certain principles governing this talk page which I expect you to adhere to if you post here. (This talk page is my "territory", (although I acknowledge it's not really mine, it's the community's) and I assume janitorial responsibility for it.)
I may, without notice, refactor comments to put like with like, correct indents, or retitle sections to reflect their contents more clearly. If I inadvertently change the meaning of anything, please let me know so I can fix it!
While I reserve the right to delete comments I find egregiously poor form, I am normally opposed to doing so and use monthly random archives instead. If you post here, your words will remain here and eventually in the archives, so please do not delete them, use strikeouts. In other words, think carefully about what you say rather than posting hastily or heatedly.
Edit warring here is particularly bad form. One of my WP:TPW's may well issue a short block, so don't do it.
Interpersonal communication does not work when messages are left on individual users' talk pages rather than threaded, especially when a third party wishes to read or reply.
Being a "bear of very little brain", I get easily confused when trying to follow conversations that bounce back and forth, so I've decided to try the convention that many others seem to use, aggregation of messages on either your talk page or my talk page. If the conversation is about an article I will try to aggregate on the article's talk page.
If the conversation is on your talk page or an article talk page, I will watch it.
If the conversation is on my talk page or an article talk page and I think that you may not be watching it, I will link to it in a note on your talk page, or in the edit summary of an empty edit. But if you start a thread here, please watch it.
I may mess up, don't worry, I'll find it eventually. Ping me if you really need to.
please note this is a personal preference rather than a matter of site policy
Thank you very much for working with me in 2010 to make the encyclopedia a better place. Regardless of any disagreements we may have had, I want to wish you all the very best for 2011. I look forward to working with you, and I hope for health and happiness to you and your family in the year to come. I therefore send you this glass of the cratur, so you can celebrate, whether it is Hogmanay or New Year's Day where you are. Warmest regards, --John (talk) 04:58, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
I wonder if you know anyone with a kinda broadly watched talk page, and who might be interested in the approach I've proposed at Misplaced Pages:Sexual_content - it takes just one section of the much voted upon proposal over at commons, and proposes a new restriction on content use over here. Perhaps it'll find broad support (currently I think it would only effect a small no. of rather useless images) - maybe you'd like to take a look :-) (and pass it on.....) Privatemusings (talk) 08:19, 6 January 2011 (UTC)oh, and happy new year too! - hope you had a stormer!
I'm not sure what a stormer is, but I think I might have? :) I hope this idea of yours comes to fruition, I've commented there. ++Lar: t/c15:21, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
Description: There will be a behind-the-scenes tour of the National Archives and you will learn more about what NARA does. We will also have a mini-film screening featuring FedFlix videos along with a special message from Jimmy Wales. In the afternoon, there will be lightning talks by Wikimedians (signup to speak), wiki-trivia, and cupcakes to celebrate!
Details & RSVP: Details about the event are on our Washington, DC tenwiki page.
Please RSVP soon as possible, as there likely will be a cap on number of attendees that NARA can accommodate.
I will criticize you for your inappropriate warnings when appropriate. Internalize that. I suggest you stop sniping at me and look to your own behavior. jps (talk) 17:59, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Applies to you far more than I, sir. You should stop "helicoptering" in to snipe at me when I make comments not directed at you. If you don't, sterner measures may need to be taken, in view of your troublesome history and long block record. That record suggests you haven't learned how to behave properly yet. ++Lar: t/c18:45, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Applies to you far more than I, sir. You should stop "helicoptering" in to place faux warnings in conversations that you have no involvement in. If you don't, sterner measures may need to be taken, in vieew of your troublesome history and singling out by arbcom in the climate case. That record suggests you haven't learned how to behave properly yet. jps (talk) 18:49, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
I had an interest (see the next section), although you're correct, I am "uninvolved". As for ArbCom singling folk out, you got lucky, frankly, as they missed a chance to sanction you. You need to find a different hobby (or paid avocation, whatever). Parrot this back too, if you can. It will make for interesting reading at WQA I think. ++Lar: t/c19:53, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Congratulations on being married to Josette! She and I have had a few pleasant interactions, and we seem to be on the same page wrt the Tim Ball AfD review. I had no idea you even knew each other until I just now visited your user page.
What I was coming for was to ask you to please stop arguing with Guettarda and jps. There's no point in it, it's unproductive, it wastes time and space, it's unbecoming of an administrator. My husband was just telling someone today how much he values my comments about his actions. Maybe Josette would suggest you not drop in and make gratuitous remarks like you did to Guettarda? and then defend yourself to jps?
I'm not writing about this to jps even though I wish he had not responded to you because I don't think he would be receptive, and my intention is to be a peacemaker, not a troublemaker. I'm hoping you will take my comments as a sincere effort to keep the AfD review civil and on topic. Regards, Yopienso (talk) 19:36, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
I had not seen the newest additions to the page when I posted the note above. You see, your comments only provoked further insults. Yopienso (talk) 19:51, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
jps is digging himself a hole. Let him. You are correct that he's not at all receptive to input about his behavior, though. ++Lar: t/c19:54, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Believe it or not, I did not notice the sniping between you on this page when I opened this section. Shame on you both!
I came here this time to point out to you this is a sad anniversary for Guettarda and I am unwilling to add to her sorrow. Bearing her insults does not hurt me. Yopienso (talk) 19:56, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Lar, thank you for this kind comment recognizing the quality of my contributions and writing. That was very thoughtful of you. It is most appreciated. I hope you are doing well. Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 22:54, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, Lar, your kind comments are most appreciated. It is rare and surprising and appreciated and helps keep me going to get positive feedback on my efforts at new article creation, as opposed to the opposite. So when it occurs, I truly do appreciate it, a lot. ;) Care to help with additional research for more WP:RS secondary sources, in collaboration at the article's talk page? :) -- Cirt (talk) 20:13, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
It's not my area of expertise but if time permits, maybe. You might try to rope my wife in instead, she's much better at researching 19th century authors... she also has some library access I don't. ++Lar: t/c19:37, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Hello!
I wanted to touch base and let you know that, as part of the ongoing project with Misplaced Pages, The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is considering a second Backstage Pass Event this spring, likely to be held in April. Since you were interested previously but were unable to attend, I wanted to feel out if a Saturday event would work for you this coming April? Thanks for helping us gauge interest! Things are moving along with the image donation and there should be more press soon to share as things move forward. Thanks again for your interest! HstryQT (talk) 18:20, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
I'd say there is a chance but it's not really high probability for me, I get very booked up on weekends. ++Lar: t/c19:38, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
I think some of your sock allegations are not particularly well founded. You seem to trot them out whenever you're losing arguments on merits.
I try to be very careful before accusing any account of being a sock. If I've made any errors I'd like to correct them. Could you tell me which sock allegations you're referring to and why you're concerned about them? Will Bebacktalk04:34, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
It's a general tendency to trot out sock allegations as a tactic (and it's not just you that does it, the CC folk use Scibaby as a bogeyman in much the same way) rather than any specific case. Are you going to allege that every single pro LaRouche edit is from HK himself? It's a fringe group to be sure but it's not a one man band. ++Lar: t/c15:15, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
That's an assumption of bad faith. I have never asserted what you're saying, that every pro-LaRouche edit is made by HK. You said that some of my sock allegations aren't well founded. I'd like to address any specific cases that you think are questionable. Will Bebacktalk09:59, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Saying that identifying socks is a tactic used to gain an upper hand in an editing dispute, rather than for the actual reason of identifying the socks, is incorrect. I believe that every time a sock of HK has been identified it has been a correct identification of a sock of a banned user who should not be editing Misplaced Pages. Unlike Scibabay, none of the identifications of HK's socks have been overturned. I see that you haven't pointed to any specific accounts that you think may have been misidentified. Is that because there aren't any? Will Bebacktalk20:53, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
My perception of you is that being perceived as correct/winning is more important than being correct. That may be an incorrect perception, of course, but it is what I see, and I think you should work to not let that be a perception that some folk have. Making sock allegations as a tactic in editing disputes goes well with that. Why did you, for example, strike everything AngelsFlight said? ++Lar: t/c21:03, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
I struck out HK's sock's posting because HK is a banned editor and is not allowed to edit Misplaced Pages. Because editors had replied to his comments, striking them out was less disruptive than deleting them. Do you think that editors should be able to ignore blocks and bans, and to edit Misplaced Pages freely? If so, what's the point of having blocks and bans? Will Bebacktalk21:50, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
That's sort of begging the question (as many use the term), and you know it. That said... No, in general I do not, although there are exceptions. The rule is applied more strongly in article space than elsewhere, of course, and there are allowances for "standing behind" the words of others... did you consider that approach? To be honest, I'm not totally convinced AF is a sock of HK. I've not seen what the determination was based on, though. ++Lar: t/c22:27, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
You've failed to address what I see as the more important point though, that my perception is that you're more concerned with winning, than with correctness and that your tactics obscure that. Again, is there any chance you've misidentified any HK socks???? Any chance whatever? 22:30, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
I don't know what your perception is based on, so I don't know how to address it. As for misidentifying socks, it's certainly possible. That's why I'm writing to you. You say that you think some of the identifications are not well-founded, and I'd like to make sure they are not mistaken. Which ones do you have concerns about and why? Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!
At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Misplaced Pages:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.
Apologies for the short notice for this meetup, but let's discuss when, where & what for DC Meetup #17. Also, if you haven't yet, please join wikimedia-dc mailing list to stay informed. Cheers, User:Aude (talk)
