Bokaro Steel City (Template:Lang-hi) pronunciation, often known as City of Scholars, is a major industrial city in the State of Jharkhand, in India. It is the district headquarters of Bokaro which is one of the most industrialized zone in India.

Bokaro Steel City is the home of the largest steel plant in Asia, and several other large, medium and small industries like Jaypee Cements, ECL, DVC, CCL, HSCL, BRL, SAIL, ONGC etc. Some big corporates are also setting up there industries here, such as - ArcelorMittal , Posco , Monnet Steel and SAIL greenfield steel are coming soon around the city. In the next five years Bokaro alone contribute half of the steel production of the country. Apart from steel plants a power plant of 1000 MW is also coming up.

Bokaro is the headquarters of the Bokaro district as well as Koylanchal range (Bokaro, Dhanbad and Giridih). It is also one of the three headquarters of the Police IG zone, apart from Ranchi and Dumka, covering seven districts- Hazaribagh, Dhanbad, Giridih, Koderma, Chatra, Bokaro, and Ramgarh.

Bokaro , the name originated from the river Bokaro in the west side of the district. Total Urban population of Bokaro Steel city including Chas, Jainamore, Tupkadih Industrial area and real estate hub Chira Chas is near about 10,00,000 while district population is about 21,00,000. The urban area of City is more than 250 km. Situated on the Chhota Nagpur Plateau, the city is strewn by valleys and winding streams.It is one of the best cities in India for living and 48th cleanest city of India and 2nd in Jharkhand. In this setting, within three decades, the area has blossomed into a regional urban centre of around a million people.

History

Formerly there was a village named Maraphari (it is also pronounced as Marafari) deep in the jungles of Chota Nagpur. The closest village cluster was Chas. Purulia was the closest town and the area was ruled by the Maharaja of Kashipur. Folklore has it that this area came under Mughal rule by the conquests of Man Singh. The region was named ManBhoom after him (VeerBhoom and SinghBhoom are the neighbouring regions also named after him, Veer Man Singh).

This remote place came into prominence when Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru planned to build the first swadeshi steel plant with the help of the Soviets. The proximity to coal, iron ore, manganese, and other raw materials had helped in the selection of this place. The steel plant was incorporated as a limited company on 24 January 1964, and was later merged with SAIL and came to be known as Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL). The late 1960s and early 1970s saw heavy construction of the steel plant as well as the township. The first blast furnace started on 2 October 1972.

The Sector III and Camps I and II were the first to come in the township followed by Sectors II, IX, IV and so on. The first private school came in the form of St. Xavier's School which the Jesuits from Hazaribagh built on invitation from the BSL management. The 1980s saw rapid development of the township with new sectors, schools, parks, zoos and other public amenities. Township development ceased with the completion of IV/F and IV/G. In all Bokaro Steel City consists of 12 sectors (sectors VII and X do not exist).

The late 1990s saw sprucing up of the City Park and creation of islands, new schools and the success of Bokaro's students in all India level competition exams, specially IITs. During this period Bokaro also emerged as the eastern hub for academics. Bokaro has a cosmopolitan culture as the population consists of people from all parts of India.

Geography

Bokaro is located in the eastern part of India at 23°17′N 86°05′E / 23.29°N 86.09°E / 23.29; 86.09

It is located in picturesque surroundings on the southern bank of river Damodar with Garga, one of its tributaries meandering along the southern and eastern outskirts of the city. On the north, the city is flanked by the high ranges of the Parasnath Hills and on the south just beyond the river Garga, it is enveloped by the Satanpur hillocks.

Two cooling ponds have been built for use in steel making. A dam on river Garga has been built to supply water to the township as well as the steel plant, but due to ever increasing demand Tenughat dam is supplementing it.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census, under the urban agglomeration of Bokaro Steel City had a population of 563,417 making it the 87th largest city in India. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Bokaro Steel City has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%, with male literacy of 93% and female literacy of 79%.

Economy

The city gets its name from the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) which lies at the core of its economy. It's well aided by the new steel mill Electrosteel Castings Limited and power plants like Bokaro Power Supply Corporation Private Limited, a joint venture of Damodar Valley Corporation and BSL. Bharat Refactories Ltd has its HQ here. IOCL has a depot,India's first explosive factory is here at Gumia,maximum coal mines are occupied by CCL and washeries or collieries by BCCL,There are 3 power plants also.

SAIL

The economy of the Steel City is heavily depended on the steel plant which is the primary source of income for the employees. After the 2001 downturn, steel prices hardened due to a huge rise in consumption by China and India. This resulted in large profits by SAIL which crossed a record Rs 6000 crores (USD 1.3 Bn) by the end of FY' 06. It has maintained its profitability since then with a slight dip to Rs 4900 crores (USD 1 Bn) in 2011 due to unfavorable economic conditions of 2011.

Markets

The primary economy is supported by the services sector. The city market situated at the center of the city in Sector 4 has shops selling computer hardware and has computer training institutes, making Bokaro a hub of computer studies for the region. The old Chas bazaar still remains a cheap wholesale market, and dundi baag is one of the biggest vegetable markets in the region. Besides these, each sector has its own small shopping center catering to the day to day needs of the people.

Malls and multiplexes

The Bokaro administration has taken a step to turn Bokaro into a shopping hub for the region. An anti-encroachment drive has been launched in the steel city to make way for malls and multiplexes. The BSL administration has prepared a blueprint to develop shopping destinations and multiple-screen theaters.

To give an improved look to the city for the residents, and in a move to turn it into model township, Bokaro Steel bosses decided to build more shopping complexes, malls and multiplexes in sector IV, sector V, sector XI and in vacant lands behind the residences of Deputy Commissioner and Inspector General of the coal belt.

Entertainment projects

• The Bokaro Mall - With a cost of Rs 40 crore, The Bokaro Mall-cum-multiplex will soon come up in the heart of the city. The new mall will be established in the 2 acres (8,100 m) of land with Three Screens of Fame Multiplex, Big Bazaar, Restaurants, Food Court, Club with facilities of sauna bath, steam bath, gym and swimming pool. J P Agarwal, one of the best architects in Eastern India has designed the multiplex which may open in 2012. Eyelex multiplex is also one of the upcoming multiplex project in bokaro.

• Bokaro Steel Plant - Bokaro Steel Plant(23°40′16″N 86°06′16″E / 23.671136°N 86.104531°E / 23.671136; 86.104531) is one of the largest steel mills in the country, with an output capacity of more than five million tonnes of steel. The plant also has a power plant, now being run by Bokaro power Supply Company Ltd., a 50–50 joint venture between SAIL and DVC. The plant is undergoing a modernization program, and the increased demand for steel over the last couple of years saw all the blast furnaces in the company becoming operational together for the first time. The company has about 30000 employees on its rolls as of 2005. d.

• Garga Dam is located around 12 km from the city centre, Near to railway station on the NH-23. It is a picnic spot for the citizens of Bokaro. The green surroundings and variety of aquatic habitat residing in and around Garga Dam lures school excursions and biological expeditions to the area The dam is constructed for the use of the steel plants as well as for a water supply for the people.

• Parasnath Hills - Parasnath Hills are a range of hills located in Giridih district of Jharkhand. The highest peak is 1350 metres. In Jainism, the Parasnath hills are referred to as Shri Sammet Shikhar Teerth (Shikharji). They are one of the two most prominent Jain pilgrimage centers, the other being Shetrunjaya, located in Gujarat state of Western India. The hill is named after Parasnath, the 23rd Tirthankara. Twenty of the twenty-four Jain Tirthankaras attained salvation on this hill. According to some, nine Tirthakaras attained salvation on this hill.

• Rajrappa is a tourist place and is famous for the 'Chinnamasta Temple' which is situated on the bank of the confluence of the rivers Bhairavi and Damodar. The temple is nestled amidst dense greenery eight kilometres from the Colony. The place gets its name from the temple which is known as 'Rajrappa Mandir'. Rajrappa is 60 km from the Bokaro Steel City.

• Bokaro Ispat Pustakalaya, located near Bokaro Hotel, has a collection of over 40,000 books (including some valuable manuscripts) that meets the reading requirements of the people in the township. It is managed by the management of the steel plant.

• City Centre, Bokaro is the main shopping district of the city. The difference between the market and most other major markets in Indian cities is in the ample parking space, and the wide approach and market roads. The centre has all major Indian banks, shops for clothing, electronics, and food joints. There are two cinemas - Jeetendra and Pali Plaza. The latest comers to the market are coaching institutes, small clinics, and hospitals.

• Buddha Vihar is located in Sector-IV/D. This is the single place in Bokaro for the Buddhists religious gathering.

• Gayatri Mandir is located in Sector-9/A. People visit the place during the morning and evening for the daily prayer. Navmi puja at Gayatri mandir is also famous. Khichri is distributed as the prasad on the occasion of Navmi puja.

• Aaiyappa Mandir is located in Sector-5, it is an important social, cultural and religious meeting place for people from the south.

• Ram Mandir, located in the Sector-1/C, is the most famous mandir dedicated to Lord Ram and smaller other mandirs encircling it dedicated to other gods and goddesses. The Ram Mandir market is known for its coffee house, batata poori, chat, samosa, phuchka and egg-rolls. Ram Mandir houses one of the oldest markets of Bokaro. The airport is 1 km from Ram Mandir.

• Jagannath Temple, located in Sector-4, ia a newly built temple. The temple is a replica of the famous temple in Puri, Orissa.

• Kali Mandir, located in Sector-8, is one of the oldest temples of the city. As the name suggests, the temple is dedicated to one of the incarnations of Shakti, Goddess Kali. Besides the religious activities it is also a major socializing place for the Bengalis of the city. The temple organizes an annual painting competition attended by hundreds of students from the schools of the city.

• Sri Sri Kalika Maharani Temple in Bokaro in the state of Jharkhand, India is a Hindu temple at Chira Chas, built by Aashiyaan Estate Developers. The temple is spread over half an acre and is dedicated to Goddess Kali. The mini township of Kalika Vihar is named after this temple.

• Sai Baba Sansthan is located in Sector - 6 near the TV tower. Daily aartis at morning 5.30 Kakar Aarti, 6.30 Abhishek Aarti, 12.00 Noon Dhoop Aarti, at evening 6.00 p.m. Sandhya Aarti and 9.00 pm Shez Aarti are performed. A special aarti is performed every Thursday 8.00 p.m.

• City Park - Bokaro has a City Park with an artificial lake and three artificial islands. These islands were designed in Japanese style. The park used to have some animals but they were transferred to the Jawaharlal Botanical Garden in the early 1990s. There is a small guest house that is used to host parties for visiting dignitaries. The park hosts an annual Basant Mela (Spring Fiesta) in early February.

• Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park is the biggest zoological garden in Jharkhand, was built in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It has animals and birds from different parts of the world, with the big cats being the biggest attractions. The zoo came into limelight after multiple breedings of white tigers, royal Bengal tigers, and the Asiatic lion. The cubs were sent to zoos in India and abroad, since the available resources were not good enough to cater to the needs of so many big cats. Boating is allowed in the artificial lake created within the park. There is a kids corner near the bear cage and adjacent to it is a small dam.

• Chira Chas is a housing suburb of Bokaro Steel City, situated behind Bokaro Hotel. This place is leading the real estate boom in Jharkhand with prominent builders developing new housing projects such as Vastu Vihar phases, Kalika Vihar and Kunj Vihar.

• Chas - Once a small grain trading hub of the region, this town first became famous during the Second World War when the British government used it as a base to supply soldiers fighting on the eastern front against the Japanese. After the decision of government of India to establish the Bokaro Steel Plant it gained in stature. It was the administrative headquarters of the area when Bokaro was a part of Dhanbad district, and later when Bokaro became a district. The headquarters were moved to the steel township.

• Pupunki Ashram is the last Kasba on the Bokaro Dhanbad route. The village, with its fields and fishery ponds, is squeezed between NH-32, the Bokaro-Chandrapura railway line and the Damodar river. Opposite to the village across the NH-32 is the pious Pupunki Ashram "The Multiversity". Established by Akhanda Mandaleshwer Sri Sri Swami Swarupananda Paramhansha Deva, popularly known as Babamani. This Ashram was a home for Gurus who used to harbour Gaushalas with hundreds of students being imparted scientific and spiritual knowledge. The place is a popular picnic spot.

• Chandrapura is a town famous for the Chandrapura Thermal Power Station, a unit of Damodar Valley Corporation. It was a major source of pollution owing to the coal-based generators, but things changed after electrostatic precipitators were installed in the chimneys, and large-scale afforestation was carried out. The town lies on the northern edge of perhaps the most polluted river in the world, the Damodar.

• Bokaro (Thermal) is a town famous for the Bokaro Thermal Power Station, a unit of Damodar Valley Corporation(DVC). It is the oldest power plant of Asia. It has two power plants BTPS-A and BTPS-B.BTPS-B generates 600 MW of electricity.

• New Pindergoria is a small village 2 km from Chas Bokaro. The village houses a large number of migrants.

• Jainamore is one of the 42 villages in the Jaridih block of Bokaro. Situated on the NH-23, it is 7 km away from the Bokaro Steel City railway station. It houses a large migrant population from Asansol, Ravatdih, Mahuaar, Kanchnpur and Kundori who live and work at the Bokaro Steel Plant.

• Balidih is an industrial area. It is located parallel to the NH-23 and 28 km from the city . It has the core industrial area of Bokaro and the regional office of BIADA (Bokaro Industrial Area Development Authority). It has the Railways Stadium for athletics and football. It has facilities for indoor sports like table tennis, badminton, chess, billiards and outdoor sports like swimming and tennis.

• Siwandih is adjacent to the NH 23. The village houses a large number of migrants mostly from Bihar living and working in the steel plant. It lies southwest of Bokaro near the railway station and the Garga Dam. Neighborhood includes Bansgora, Islampur, Makhdumpur, Millat Nager and Haisabatu. There are a number of mosques and temples in the neighourhood.

• Ritudih is adjacent to the NH 23. The village houses a large number of migrants mostly from Bihar living and working in the steel plant. It lies southwest of Bokaro near the railway station and the Garga Dam. Neighborhood includes Siwandih, Bansgora, Islampur, Makhdumpur Millat Nager and Haisabatu. There are a number of temples and mosques in the neighourhood.

• Tenughat, also known as Tenu, is known for its power plant and dam on the River Damodar. A popular tourist destination, the place is noted for the Tenughat Bird Sanctuary. Other landmarks are Tenughat College, Tenughat Dam and Tenughat Thermal Power Station. Aiyar, Gumia and Petarbar are nearby.

• Pindrajora is a small village 20 km from Naya. It hosts the only primary teachers training college of Dhanbad and Bokaro. It has a State Government Basic School and a Sarvodaya high school.

• Co-operative Colony is a private neighbourhood built by ex-employees of Bokaro Steel Plant. It is located close to Naya More as well as the Bokaro railway station. It is enclosed by a boundary wall and there are three gates for entry and exit. The main gate is called Cooperative More. A few medical clinics and the Manpasand sweet shop are located close to the main gate. The neighbourhood houses a small shopping complex, Kali mandir, Hanuman mandir, and a community hall.

• HSCL Co-Operative colony is a Place near talgaria more,built by retired engineers of HSCL.It is housing colony of engineers where they have made there home on their purchased plots.

Education

Besides the steel plant, Bokaro is also known for what the students from the city have achieved over the years. The city also boasts of very large expatriate population in US, UAE, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In fact during 90's and early 2000s Bokaro used to have more than 100 students clearing IIT JEE every year.In 2008, 3 students, Mayank Priyadarshi, Shankhneel Singh and Pramod Kumar, cracked AIIMS in first attempt, while Reet and Varsha secured top ranks in AIPMT. In 2012, Bokaro students secured top 4 state positions in IIT JEE examination. AIIMS and IIT JEE is considered one of the toughest examination to crack.

Stadiums

• MohanKumar Mangalam Stadium stadium is situated in heart of the city, in sector 4. The stadia is managed by BSL, hosting events in city. The capacity of the stadium is 30,000 with a corporate gallery for VIPs. The stadium hosts National and State football leagues. It has an athletics track.

The stadium is the Head quarter of SAIL Football Academy. The SAIL Football Academy students' team has three Subroto Cups to its credit.

• The SAIL Football Academy nourishes football from school level and provides free education to students who perform well in football. Bokaro school teams participate every year in Subroto Cup and have emerged as winners on many occasions.

• The Senapati Cricket Stadium is situated behind the Mohankumar Mangalam Stadium, in front of the Bokaro Library. It has hosted some Ranji Cup and state level matches. The base camp for the National Women Cricket team was organized at the stadium. It is managed by BSL.

• The Railway Stadium is situated near Bokaro station in the Balidih area. It is managed by Indian Railways and hosts athletics and football. Accommodation facilities for the players is provided at a nearby hostel.

• The Trainees Hostel Ground accommodates local and guest players. The lodging facility is provided by Trainees hostel No.1 and No.2. Hostel 1 provides a facility for sporting events such as weightlifting, and basketball.

• The Bokaro Club and Ispat Club is situated in Sec.5 and Sec.4 respectively, with facilities for indoor sports like table tennis, badminton, chess, billiards as well as for sports such as swimming and tennis. Coaches are available for volleyball, basketball, handball, table tennis, kabaddi and khokho.

Several players from the city have also represented India at International championships.

Culture

Bokaro Sangeet Kala Academy offers learning opportunities in fine art, especially classical music. The students also get opportunities to showcase their talent and training.

Kala Kendra in Sector-2 is a center for Arts and Culture.

Festivals like Dussera, Diwali, Eid and Chhath Puja are celebrated across the township.

Health services

The township has a 910-bed Bokaro General Hospital (BGH) with specialised units like Critical Care Unit, Intensive Coronary Care Unit, Haemodialysis Unit, Nuclear Medicine Laboratory, etc. The Child Care Unit of BGH has been recognised as a Baby Friendly Hospital by UNICEF. The Blood Bank of BGH has been given the status of Regional Training Centre by Government of India. It is the only blood bank in the state of Jharkhand, which gives training to blood bank officers and technicians in Jharkhand.

To take care of the employees working in the plant, an Occupational Health Services Centre has been provided within the plant premises. Bokaro General Hospital is recognised by the Indian Medical Council for imparting training to Housemen and Interns and also by the Nursing Council of India for training of Student Nurses. Bokaro General Hospital has the distinction of being the only one in Jharkhand being recognised by the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi as a centre for imparting post-graduate training to candidates appearing for the Diplomat of National Board examinations. The medical team has around 200 skilled doctors and over 1000 paramedic staff.

The 10 neighbourhood health centres provide primary health services to people for minor ailments and are a valuable network during free immunization drives.

Bokaro steel city is connected with important parts of the country like Kolkata, Durg, Coimbatore, New Delhi, Chennai, Jabalpur, Surat, Hyderabad, Alappuzha, Bilaspur, Mumbai, Nagpur, Lucknow, Guwahati, Amritsar, Raipur, Gorakhpur, Patna, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneshwar, Varanasi etc. by rail. Bokaro Steel City is the main station of the city situated 12 km from the city centre. It is under the administration of the South Eastern Railway zone of Indian Railways. All mail/express trains including Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, Garib Rath and Jan Shatabdi Express stop here. Other stations within the city limit are Radhagaon, Tupkadih, Chandrapura, Bandhdih, Chas, Ispatnagar, Telgaria.

Bokaro lies on the junction of NH-32 and NH-23. NH-32 passes through Chas whereas NH-23 passes through the main city.

Naya More is the main bus terminal. The bus stand is divided into platforms for private buses. A Government Bus Terminal is just adjacent to the main bus terminal. Besides Naya More there are two more bus terminals, Basanti More in Sector-9 and Dharamshala more in Chas. Regular Volvo bus services from the city centre and Naya More are available.

Private cars and taxi facilities are available everywhere in the city. Other transport is trekkers, autos, rickshaws and mini buses. The city boasts of one of the most well maintained roads in the whole state as maintenance is under the authority of the Steel Plant.

Air

Bokaro Steel City airport is used only by private carriers of Sail and dignitaries,. The Steel City is all set to figure in the commercial flight map soon, with Kingfisher Airlines initiating the process to launch its flights between Bokaro and Kolkata. Bokaro Steel Limited has expressed its readiness to allow the use of its airport for the purpose.

New Airport

Steel cities of Bokaro will soon figure on the country's air map as the Airports Authority of India will set up new airports there.A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by the AAI and the Jharkhand government for establishing airports in both the cities(Bokaro & Jamshedpur) in the presence of AAI chairman and Jharkhand chief minister Arjun Munda.

The new airport would have the capacity to allow commercial airliners such as Airbus A320 to land and take off which was not possible from the present airport.
