Muzakija (Template:Lang-sq) was geographical region of Epirus which corresponds to southern central part of modern day Albania between rivers Shkumbin and Seman.

Etymology

According to Gjon Muzaka (not completely reliable primary source) this region was populated by Molossi people (an ancient Greek tribe) and named after them. He also stated that Muzaka family name is derived from the name of this people and region (Molossi into Molosachi and finally Musachi). According to his explanation the name of the region, Mosachia, was also derived from corruption of Molossi. Finally, Mosachia became Myzeqe in Albanian language.

Economy

This region is well known for its agricultural potential which was not always utilized because of the emigrations of its population. Because it provided pasture land for cattle during winter many nomadic Vlachs who did not have their permanent settlements lived in Muzakija between October and March. Aromanians from Muzakija were referred to as Muzakiri.

The region of Muzakija is full of Slavic toponyms.
