Books & Bytes New Years Double Issue

Books & Bytes

Volume 1 Issue 3, December/January 2013

(Sign up for monthly delivery)

Happy New Year, and welcome to a special double issue of Books & Bytes. We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!

The Misplaced Pages Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:

Increased access to sources: 1500 editors signed up for 3700 free accounts, individually worth over $500,000, with usage increases of 400-600%

Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC

New pilot projects: Started the Misplaced Pages Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Misplaced Pages researchers

Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors

Tech scoped: Spec'd out a reference tool for linking to full-text sources and established a basis for OAuth integration

Broad outreach: Wrote a feature article for Library Journal's The Digital Shift; presenting at the American Library Association annual meeting

SG for Sorrow

On 16 February 2014, Schon gewusst? was updated with a fact from the translation of the article Sorrow (Van Gogh), which you recommended to me for translation. The fact was: Vincent van Gogh zeichnete in Sorrow eine schwangere Frau, die er unterstützte. (Vincent van Gogh drew in Sorrow a pregnant woman whom he supported) You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (quick check).

Template mergers

Hi Andy, I have noticed you have been nominating a ton of templates to be merged, and quite frankly, it makes many pages look rather unsightly, particularly when the template appears in the middle of the page (i.e. Andrew Jackson and the cabinet template). Do you know of a way to minimize this negative effect for our readers? It makes the pages look poor and sloppy. Is there a particular necessity in merging the templates (e.g., bandwidth/server space or something?); I am just concerned it is having a net negative effect for the readers – am more than open to discussion. Thanks in advance! Go Phightins! 20:56, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

@Go Phightins!: Belated response, sorry. The need to merge or delete redundant templates is to reduce the maintenance overhead, and to reduce confusion for editors trying to choose which to use. The notification system is standard, and intended to ensure that all interested editors are aware of the proposed changes. If you object to how it appears, you should raise that on a central talk page for the TfD process. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:52, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 24

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Template:Infobox football biography

Hi. As you probably know I'm trying to make the football biography template embeddable but when embedded in another template the border and the cellpadding/spacing don't go away. Any idea how to correct this? Davykamanzitalk · contribs 17:36, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Sorry; I don't. You might ask on WP:VPT. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:42, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
Before reverting User:Lukeno94 again, I think it would be worth you examining his (and others') concerns at WT:FOOTY and Template talk:Infobox football biography. The changes made by User:Davykamanzi have dramatically altered the aesthetics of the infobox, and for no reason other than to apply embedding functionality to the infobox – a function that is not currently necessary. Once Davykamanzi has worked out how to solve the aesthetic issue, then the changes should be applied, but not before. – PeeJay 23:04, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
I would't have reverted him the first time, had he made his concerns clear, instead of using an edit summary to the effect "revert undiscussed changes". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:23, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi Andy, please see Talk:Jewellery#Spanish_link_.22In_other_languages.2C.22_leads_to_obscure_article - he's right, the Spanish link should go to "Joya" not "Joyeria" (Jewellers - 2 lines). I tried but failed to fix it. No doubt you know what to do. Thanks I expect I'll see you on the 28th. Johnbod (talk) 15:36, 2 March 2014 (UTC)
