Deleted?
I'm just curious. As being somewhat new to the Wiki editing side of things, maybe I completely misunderstood the system. But what was the point of us debating and providing evidence for two weeks straight in regards to The Protomen?
That was the article that sparked me to become an editor and since then I've been seeing a trend. Anyone involved on the delete side would never provide any sort of argument, they simply voted per nom delete. I was told it wasn't a vote. Don't get me wrong, I saw plenty of pointing of fingers and sockpuppet this and sockpuppet that.
But what makes no sense to me is the fact no argument, explanation, or evidence was EVER provided to say this band was not notable and clearly plenty was given to show that it did meet certain guidelines to have a home here on Wiki. I'm just curious - and I don't mean any disrespect when I say this, but was it your opinion that mattered all along - not ours? Or was it simply a vote?
It very much seems like this place is based off a "guilty until proven innocent" system. I really believe if you attack someones work it should be your job to explain why it should be deleted. I'd honestly like to understand, because I am now afraid the things that I would personally like to write about would simply be deleted.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Draxis (talk • contribs) 05:22, 2006 June 22 (UTC)
- Hello Draxis, thanks for your message. I'm sorry for you that something you spend so much time on has been judged for deleteion. I don't know it it makes you feel any better or not, but your case is not exactly unique - it can happen to new editors and experienced editors alike.
- Let me address deletion in a general sense first. We actually start with a presumption of keeping the article. If you want to read through other closed deletions,if it is a toss-up (or "no consensus") then the article gets kept. Articles about people (or people who have come together to form a band in this case) are interesting cases because there are so many people who would love to have an article written about them, or their best friend, or the cool band they saw last week. That is why we have notability guidelines like WP:BIO and WP:BAND.
- Another thing about deletion is that people with brand new Misplaced Pages accounts coming to add to the debate are given different weight than long-standing accounts. As you say, this is not a vote. It is too easy for people to try to "stack the vote" with sock-puppets and by telling all their friends at school "hey, come help me here on Misplaced Pages".
- In this particular case, we have an article that appears to fail WP:BAND. It has already been determined to be deleted by consensus previously. The oringial nominator explained both these two things. Others came and agreed wit the nominator. It is not necessary for them to give long explanations of why they agree with those two points - saying they agree with them is sufficient. The newly arrived editor comments were considered. Overall, no one voting "keep" made any argument that overcomes long-standing community standards (as embodied by WP:Band) and no evidence the band's notability has changed much since the last vote-for-deletion. That is why the article got deleted by consensus.
- I hope you don't let this experience steer you away from Misplaced Pages. Instead, I hope you will take a closer look at our guidelines as to what sort of articles we are looking for. You may want to spend some time editting existing articles rather than taking a chance on something brand new right away.
- If I can be any further assistance in explaining this action, or in helping you with anything else in Misplaced Pages, please let me know.
- Thanks, Johntex\ 14:52, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks
Johntex: Thanks for the wikifying of my stolensidekick.com article. I was a bit amazed that there was not already an article on the issue. Shawn Pickrell 19:04, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
I did not know there was already an article that had been deleted. However, said VFD was 11 days ago (an eternity in terms of the lifespan of Internet memes) and has been picked up by larger media outlets. I have also included an example of Internet vigilantism that warranted a kept article, the (in)famous Dog poop girl. But at least I knew someone would call for its head straight away. College coach infobox
Hey Johntex, I thought I'd run this by you since you're on the Oklahoma WikiProject as well as the UT WikiProject. I created an infobox to use on collegiate coaches that differs slightly from the NFL PlayerCoach template. I thought I'd ask you to take a look at it and see what you think and determine if it is a need as I feel it is. The template is {{College coach infobox}} and I applied it to Bob Stoops to see the format.--NMajdan•talk 19:44, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to the Military history WikiProject!
Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Misplaced Pages's coverage of topics related to military history.
A few features that you might find helpful:
- Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
- The announcement and open task box is updated quite regularly. You can watch it if you're interested; or, you can add it directly to your user page by including {{WPMILHIST Announcements}} there.
- The project has a monthly newsletter; it will normally be delivered as a link, but several other formats are available.
There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:
- Starting some new articles? Our article structure guidelines outline some things to include.
- Interested in working on a more complete article? The military history peer review and collaboration departments would welcome your help!
- Interested in a particular area of military history? We have a number of task forces that focus on specific nations or periods.
- Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every military history article in Misplaced Pages.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask one of the project coordinators, or any experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Kirill Lokshin 06:12, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

can you delete my user page please?
Hi John-
I saw that you left me a message a while back with the 5 pillars of Misplaced Pages...
I read them and realize that I had the wrong idea about what[REDACTED] was for and would like my userpage (and all it's history) deleted. I believe only an administrator can do so.
Please do that for me if you can.
I'm ashamed of my user page history and wish it was not on the internet.

Image:BCS national championship trophy and Bevo.JPG listed for deletion
An image or media file that you uploaded, Image:BCS national championship trophy and Bevo.JPG, has been listed at Misplaced Pages:Images and media for deletion. Please look there to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. BigDT 01:07, 28 June 2006 (UTC)- FYI on this photo ... I saw where you had left a comment on IFD ... the general consensus I have seen from IFD has been that use of a TV show screenshot, corporate logo, magazine cover page, etc, anywhere but on the article for the show, company, or publication itself is not fair use. I could kinda see using it on the College football on television, but even then, it doesn't seem overly relevant to the topic inasmuch as a screenshot of Lee/Herbie/Chris would be more relevant to the show itself. BigDT 13:00, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- I would suggest perhaps (1) reducing the resolution to 400x300 or something on that order to make it a "web resolution" screenshot as called for in {{tv-screenshot}}. You may even want to go so far as to delete the larger version so that someone doesn't revert to it. (2) Remove the image at least from trophy and Bevo (mascot), where it unambiguously is just illustrating the subject of the broadcast, rather than the broadcast itself. BigDT 14:44, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- Hi BigDT, thanks for your suggestions. I agree with you that the connection to trophy is small. Perhaps if we had an article on this specific trophy, but we don't, so I'll remove it. Could you please take another look at Bevo (mascot)? The image is used there in the "public appearances" section and mentions the fact that it is the current Bevo - which we don't have another photo of. If we can agree on these changes and if I replace the image with a smaller one, would that address your concerns sufficiently for you to remove your listing at Images for Deletion? Thanks again for your help. Johntex\ 14:55, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- I put a comment on IFD referencing this conversation ... I think it would be a good idea for a non-college football person to look at the issue. I don't know that it needs to be deleted given its use in College football on television ... but a third pair of eyes couldn't hurt. BigDT 15:40, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for editting some silly errors I had made when editting the entry for stolensidekick.com. Looks like a few simple errors slipped right by me though >.<

Please do not insert random pictures of your favorite marching band onto the "marching band" article. There are literally thousands of bands that could have their picture placed next to the opening paragraph and everyone trys to do it. If you wish to move your picture next to an article with context (ie: the flag picture is with the auxillary groups, the high step picture is next to the marching style) please do so, but don't just put random pictures of your favorite band in the opening paragraph.

No problems. After a conversation with W.marsh on WT:DRV, I started notifying all closing admins of deletion reviews on their actions. It happened to me in the past, and it annoyed me, so I made a template. W.marsh noted that people were still not notifying admins, so I decided to look through all DRVs and let closing admins know. Yeah, I've noticed your excellent work closing AfDs, and like me, you don't usually skip over the tough AfDs. Excellent work buddy, looks like we're overlapping again. :-) --Deathphoenix ʕ 00:33, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

New article needs images
Hi John, I started adding content to Forbes State Forest, Pennsylvania today, and I'll be doing more work on it later, hoping that it might be worth a DYK. I think that CaptainVindaloo will be doing some major editing as well. Since you've done such great work adding images to other articles I was hoping you might have the time and inclination to help with this one (in fact, I had the gall to request two images on the article's Talkpage). If you can't get to this, it's no big deal. I'm sure we can muddle through somehow, but your assistance would certainly be appreciated :) --Doc Tropics 17:05, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for your note about Forbes State Forest, Pennsylvania. Sorry I didn't reply sooner - I have been travelling. I did a little searching for a photo for this article, including the use of my two favorite photo sources. The first of these is yotophoto, which searches for free images (interestingly it was created by someone to search for free images here and at commons, though now it searches other places as well). The other is to do a Google image search with "whatever"+.gov The premise is that US govt works are in the public domain. This works especially well with topics related to the US govt, including anything NASA or the USGS would ever have put a hand into. Alas, so far I have come up dry. You might try putting a request on relevant articles, such as Talk:Pennsylvania to see if any local Wikipedians may have a photo. Good luck, Johntex\ 23:55, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Recent changes at Celal Bayar
Hi. Thanks a lot for your attention about the recent changes at Celal Bayar, an article I had created but have not been unfortunately watching. I completely reverted the edits made by Ja Volim tebe and also by you, because this person not only removed all the categories but falsified the person's name and the birthplace, as you can check. I thew them up hoping someone could make them work (I had the same problem when I previewed it --it would center on downtown LA). Looks like you nailed it on the second go. Thank you! - I agree about the difficulty in getting the coordinates to work. I hope there is a USGS quad because it would look very neat. Thanks again. --Bobak 15:59, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
Tomahawk Chop
Greetings. I am not sure how familiar you are with the tradition at Florida State, but it NEVER called the "tomahawk chop" as that has been blasted as being culturaly insensitive. At FSU, it is called the "warchant" you can read about it at the official FSU website here. Atlanta Braves fans use the term "tomahawk chop", but FSU has made it a point to distance itself from such terminology. I have moved the page to correct such error and has tried to add a bit to the histroy aspect of the tradition. AriGold 13:03, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Johntex, thank you for helping me to fight the persistent reversion to the "Flagship" version at Texas Tech University. I do just want to make sure to give you a heads up on WP:3RR. - To the vandal: What you have done is to vandalize this and other pages then offer that if we open a discussion with you that you will stop vandalizing while the discussion is going on. That is not nearly good enough. You are a blocked user using a sockpuppet accont to evade a block. As such, it is within policy to block you indefinitely. Speaking here for myself only, I am personally willing to give you another chance on three conditions: (1) you apologize for the vandalism you have done (2) you agree to serve out serve out the remainder of your one month block (5 days from whenever you agree) (3) you promise whatever the outcome of the discussion you will not return to vandalism. Thanks for your help. I have looked through the links you gave me and now I know how to edit an article. I would like to try writing an article and need to know a few things. How do I get those boxes that say This user likes football or This user speaks English? And I'm not sure how to make titles and subtitles for my articles. Could you help me? Thanks!
Wow! Thanks for the barnstar! I was happy to help - the Big XII has to stick together. That guy (the vandal) needs either an education or a girlfriend, or both. I don't know what's worse, though – him spending his Friday nights that way, or us spending our Friday nights cleaning it up. I've been called some pretty awful names over the past week, and you can't imagine how grateful I am for the support. It's a good thing CVU doesn't pay anything, 'cause they'd never get anybody to take the job. ;-) Thanks again, and I'll keep my eyes open for him! - Baseball,Baby! 21:16, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
- I checked, and those coordinates are fine. Most of central Oklahoma is at 35N 97W. From the view I got at Topozone, the arrow for the coordinates in the article (35.208522, -97.445944) points to Evans Hall, which is the administration building on the North Oval where the president's and provost's offices are. The return address for the university is 1000 Asp Avenue, a building called Buchanan Hall which houses Admissions & Records and the Bursar's Office; it's about 75 yards east of Evans Hall and roughly 100 yards north of the northwest corner of the stadium. (Can you tell where I went to school yet?) According to Google Maps, Buchanan Hall is at 35.208522, -97.459944 also, but as you take it out to more significant digits the coordinates obviously are slightly different. It's a good target for an unscrupulous vandal, though, say from these people for instance. They don't like us much - can't imagine why. ;-) Baseball,Baby!
Thanks
Thanks for the Barnstar. It's good to know that my actions are appreciated. --Myles Long 21:46, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to Misplaced Pages:WikiProject College football
Hi, and welcome to the College football Wikiproject! We are a group of editors who love college football and work to improve Misplaced Pages's coverage of this sport.
There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:
- Starting some new articles? Please add {{WikiProject College football}} to the talk page and list your new article in the new articles section.
- Looking for somewhere to help? Please see our article to do list or project to do list
If you have any ideas you would like to share or if there is any way your fellow college football fans can help you, please feel free to ask on the project talk page.
I went ahead and created the welcome message per the discussion page a week ago. Since technically, none of us have been welcomed, I thought I would post it here. ;) BigDT 00:57, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Late to the game... but thanks!
Hey Johntex, it appears that I'm a little bit late to the game, but let me add my thanks for the barnstar! This is my first, so I'm truly appreciative. Cheers, Lbbzman 11:51, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the barnstar.
Hi, Johntex. Thanks for the barnstar, and no problem reverting the vandalism. You seemed to be getting quite a lot of it! AnnH ♫ 00:50, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Your prot on Brad with just "potential magnate for vandalism" seems excessive. Please unprot. immediately. -- 67.119.194.1 15:51, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
