Mahato or Mahto is an Indian surname.During the zamindari period one person each from bhumihar,Yadav and beldar group had been given an status Mahto(Headman) for the respective part of the village.The tittle was coveted by everyone and was conferred upon deserving persons by the Zamindar. During the zamindari period, "Mahto" was a caste-agnostic title given to the headman of a village ward. The mahto's duties were to maintain peace in his area, and collect revenue for the zamndiar (feudal landlord). Now, "mahto" is used as a surname by several communities.
