Anthony Charles Robinson (Tony Robinson), OBE (born 7 September 1952) is a business speaker, author and micro-enterprise campaigner.

In 2001, Robinson was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List in recognition of his service to small firms and training.

Robinson received the Lifetime Contribution to Enterprise award from the International Association of Book-keepers (IAB) at the House of Commons in 2012 (the first of its kind) and was described by Lloyds TSB Commercial’s head of external affairs, Stephen Pegge, as “a tireless networker who has inspired so many to support the aspirations of those starting and growing their businesses”.

The Start Your Business magazine awarded Robinson with a Life Time Achievement Award in 2013 for dedicating his career to “promoting the standards for business support and the prospects of SMEs in the UK”. He is also regularly listed in the top 100 social media influencers on entrepreneurship.

Early Life

Anthony Charles Robinson was born in 1952 in North Ferriby, East Yorkshire. He lived in Hessle until the age of 19.

Education

Robinson attended Beverley Grammar School in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, from 1964 to 1971 and was in the same year as petrochemicals billionaire Jim Ratcliffe.

Career

In January 1986, Robinson founded the Business Advisory Bureau (BAB) Limited. which specialises in helping large organisations (both in the private and public sectors) engage with and supply SMEs.

In 1996, Robinson co-founded the Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative (SFEDI) Group, which despite being independent is the government recognised UK Standards Setting Body for Business Support and Business Enterprise. The SFEDI Group received £1.2 million of government funding in 2011 to help boost its Get Mentoring scheme.

Robinson also co-founded and developed the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (IOEE), which was the first entrepreneurs learning institute of its kind dedicated to recognising individuals who choose enterprise and entrepreneurship as a professional career.

Enterprise Rockers CIC was founded in 2001 by Robinson and Tina Boden. The pair held the first MicroBizMattersDay on January 8, 2015 and called upon self-employed individuals and micro-business owners to give nine minutes of their time to help support other businesses similar to their own.

The second MicroBizMattersDay, which was held on January 8, 2016, saw Charlie Mullins OBE (Pimlico Plumbers) and Sway (musician) again joined in the live streaming along with thirty other guests, including Tim Campbell (businessman) MBE and Emma Jones MBE.

Since September 2004, Robinson has served as a non-executive director for Yorkshire Coast Enterprise (YCE) Limited, a non-profit organisation which has been promoting enterprise in Scarborough, North Yorkshire since 1985.

Ahead of the 2015 UK general election, Real Business featured Robinson as part of a five British entrepreneur and executive line-up focussing on the government’s support of small companies and the improvements a new government could make.

In October 2015, the National Enterprise Network listed Robinson on its Enterprise Roll of Honour, which features individuals who have been consistently recognised for their hard work in enterprise support over the last 10 years.

Freedom from Bosses Forever is a satirical book written by Robinson which was self-published in July 2014 and launched in audiobook format in June 2016. At the audiobook launch, Robinson vowed to fight “Government and Corporate bullying”, and stand up for the 6 million small and micro business owners in the UK who are increasingly struggling to make ends meet.
