Ami Horowitz is an American documentary filmmaker. He is the co-writer, co-director, and star of the 2012 documentary U.N. Me, a critical examination of the United Nations. Horowitz came to prominence in February 2017 when President Donald Trump appeared to suggest that there had been an increase of violence in Sweden committed by refugees, on the basis of a February 17, 2017 Horowitz interview on Fox News, an interview filled with assertions which have been deemed false or unsubstantiated.

Early life and education

A native of Los Angeles, Horowitz graduated from the University of Southern California with majors in political science and philosophy.

Horowitz's mother is from Israel. He is Jewish, and spent a year at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel.

Career

After graduating from USC, Horowitz managed a Democratic candidate's unsuccessful campaign for state comptroller of Maryland. Then, taking the candidate's advice to "make money and go into politics later," he went into investment banking, and spent sixteen years in that field. During that period, he worked at Lehman Brothers. Asked by Brian Lamb on C-SPAN about his political views, Horowitz described himself as "right-of-center" but "not reflexively" so.

Writing/producing/directing

U.N. Me
Horowitz's film U.N. Me, released in theaters in 2012, was produced, directed, and written by Horowitz and Matthew Groff.
Showdown Wisconsin
In 2012, Horowitz began screening a new documentary entitled Showdown Wisconsin, about the effort to recall Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.
Ami on the Street
Horowitz created a series of satirical short films called "Ami on the Street" for FOX News. Films include Iran and their pursuit of nuclear weapons, the Ferguson riots, the IRS scandal, anti-semitism on college campuses, and The Affordable Care Act and Taxes. He received a lot of attention and millions of views from his video where he waved an ISIS flag and then an Israeli flag on the Berkeley campus.

Swedish Incident

On February 18, 2017, President Donald Trump made a statement about an (unspecified) incident 'last night in Sweden' based on a Fox News interview with Ami Horowitz, aired the night before. In that interview, Horowitz made numerous assertions about Sweden, which have been deemed false or unsubstantiated by the Swedish authorities, criminologists and a wide range of news organizations and fact-checkers. Horowitz had said in December 2016 that he was "punched, kicked and choked" by Arabic-speaking men while filming a documentary in Husby, Stockholm visiting an alleged "no-go zone the police does not enter."

Two policemen who featured in Horowitz's documentary said that Horowitz edited answers and questions to misrepresent the policemen. Two camermen involved in the project later substantiated that the policemen were correct and that the footage had been unethically edited to misrepresent the subjects. The cameramen also reviewed the raw films to confirm it. Horowitz denies it, but refused to show the raw material.
