An airstrike by the United States Air Force was carried out on a packed mosque located in the rebel-held al-Jina village, southwest of Atarib in the western countryside of Aleppo, Syria, on 16 March 2017. The attack on Umar ibn Al-Khattab mosque was reportedly done at the prayer time when the mosque was full of worshipers and led to the death of 42 people, most of them civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based group tracking developments in Syria's conflict.
Event
According to Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), up to 300 people were inside at the time of the air raids.
Casualties
Forty-two people were initially reported by the SOHR to have been killed, though the group said that by the 17th the death toll had increased to 49, while The Guardian reported that 46 people had died. The SOHR said that most of the casualties were civilians, and more than 100 people were injured. The Syrian Civil Defence said that "dozens" of people had been buried in rubble following the strike. According to the Pentagon spokesman, "dozens" of al-Qaeda fighters, including "senior al Qaeda terrorists, some of these were likely high value individuals", were among those killed. The statement by the US military official did not cover civilian casualties.
US involvement allegations
A missile fragment was reportedly found at the attack scene which had English letters corresponding with script found on missiles used by US forces, according to the investigative group Bellingcat. The Syrian Institute for Justice also released photographs showing fragments of American weapons at the site of the bombing, which British newspaper The Telegraph cited as evidence that the US was responsible for civilian casualties.
A United States Central Command spokesman, said that the area was "assessed to be a meeting place for al-Qaeda, and we took the strike." The US military also claimed that the airstrike was not targeted at the mosque but a target near the mosque. "We did not target a mosque, but the building that we did target – which was where the meeting took place – is about 50 feet from a mosque that is still standing," spokesperson Colonel John J Thomas said. However, according to Politicus USA, the mosque airstrike could have happened unintentionally by the United States Air Force and it's hard to understand how the US military claimed that those seven missiles hadn't hit the mosque.
Reactions
- Russian defense minister demanded a comment from the US after photos of a reported US missile fragment found at the site of the bombed Syrian mosque appeared online.
