Education | University of Southern California (BA) |
Occupation | Filmmaker |
Ami Horowitz is an American documentary filmmaker. He is the writer, producer, and director of "Ami on the Streets", a satirical short film series made for Fox News. Horowitz co-wrote, co-directed, and starred in the 2012 documentary U.N. Me, a critical examination of the United Nations.
Early life and education
A native of Los Angeles, Horowitz graduated from the University of Southern California with majors in political science and philosophy.
Horowitz's mother is from Israel. He is Jewish, and spent a year at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel.
Career
After graduating from USC, Horowitz managed a Democratic candidate's unsuccessful campaign for state comptroller of Maryland. Then, taking the candidate's advice to "make money and go into politics later," he went into investment banking, and spent sixteen years in that field. During that period, he worked at Lehman Brothers. Asked by Brian Lamb on C-SPAN about his political views, Horowitz described himself as "right-of-center" but "not reflexively" so.
Writing/producing/directing
U.N. Me
Horowitz's film U.N. Me, released in theaters in 2012, was produced, directed, and written by Horowitz and Matthew Groff.
Showdown Wisconsin
In 2012, Horowitz began screening a new documentary entitled Showdown Wisconsin, about the effort to recall Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.
Ami on the Street
Horowitz created a series of satirical short films called "Ami on the Street" for FOX News. Films include Iran and their pursuit of nuclear weapons, the Ferguson riots, the IRS scandal, anti-semitism on college campuses, and The Affordable Care Act and Taxes. He received a lot of attention and millions of views from his video where he waved an ISIS flag and then an Israeli flag on the Berkeley campus.
Stockholm Syndrome
In December 2016, Horowitz's 10-minute documentary Stockholm Syndrome, which explores the "cultural and religious clashes between liberal Swedes and the recent influx of refugee immigrants", was released on FoxNews.com and YouTube. The film includes audio footage that he states is of himself being "punched, kicked and choked" by Arabic-speaking men that he was trying to film in Husby, Stockholm Two policemen who were featured in Horowitz's film said that Horowitz edited answers and questions to misrepresent them. Two cameramen involved in the project later concurred, after reviewing the raw film, that the footage had been unethically edited to misrepresent the subjects. Horowitz denies it, but refused to show the raw material.
Horowitz had previously appeared on Fox Business News' Varney & Co. to talk about the documentary then in progress. He described areas in which he filmed as "no-go zones". Horowitz said that police told him that "when we're pursuing a suspect, and they cross that threshold, and there's about 30 or 40 of them in Sweden, they will not pursue". Horowitz said that while he was filming in a no-go zone, he was jumped and beaten by five people. When asked why the full story about the no-go zones was not getting out, Horowitz replied that "Sweden has done a phenomenal job at trying to cover this up", and he spoke about gang rapes at music festivals, similar to what happened "New Year's Eve in Germany".
In the months after the film was released, Horowitz appeared on a number of American news programs to discuss his film. A February 2017 appearance on one such show, Tucker Carlson Tonight, led to a media firestorm when U.S. President Donald Trump referred to the interview ambiguously in a speech the next day. In the speech, Trump talked about the dangers of unchecked immigration and stated, "You look at what's happening last night in Sweden", without giving any additional context. This led many news organizations to report that Trump had falsely claimed that there had been a terrorist attack.
Horowitz's statements about Sweden in the film and in subsequent interviews have been disputed by Swedish authorities and criminologists, and various news organizations and fact-checkers.
