This page documents an English Misplaced Pages content guideline. Editors should generally follow it, though exceptions may apply. Substantive edits to this page should reflect consensus. When in doubt, discuss first on this guideline's talk page. | Shortcut |
This page in a nutshell: The recurring events listed on this page are considered suitable for inclusion on the Main Page in the In the news section every time they occur. Other recurring events may also be included if they satisfy the usual ITN criteria. |
In the news toolbox |
---|
This page is a supplement to the existing criteria for the In the news (ITN) section on the Main Page. There is frequent discussion about the recurring events on ITN – this guideline is an attempt to standardize which get included.
Scheduled sporting events and other recurring items are different from other ITN candidates because editors can foresee them and prepare for their inclusion. There is no reason not to have a pre-existing list of approved events. Such a list also assists editors in ensuring a reasonably balanced coverage (of for example, different sports) over time.
Items which are listed on this page are considered to have already satisfied the 'importance' criterion for inclusion on ITN, every time they occur. However, the relevant article(s) will still have to be updated appropriately and proposed on the candidates page before being posted. Listing here is not an automatic guarantee that an item will be posted.
This page does not pre-empt other ITN criteria regarding inclusion. Unusual and particularly important events not listed here may also be included.
Awards

- The results of general elections in:
- All states on the List of sovereign states;
- European Union elections.
- Disputed states and dependent territories should be discussed at WP:ITN/C and judged on their own merits.

- Indirect elections, including papal elections, are also included
- The succession of a head of state:
- In those countries which qualify under the criteria above, and where head of state is not an elected position.
Changes to the head of government are discussed on their own merits. If election is held in two rounds, only the second round results (i.e., when the official is actually elected) are usually posted.

Sports
ShortcutEvery entry applies to the conclusion of the men's and women's events (when simultaneous) in the tournament or series, unless otherwise specified. Generally, the specific event article for that year/time period is the target article in the blurb (for example, 2016 Tour de France rather than the broader Tour de France); winning individuals or teams may be targets but their articles must meet the same ITN quality requirements as the event.
- The Olympics, as the world's leading multi-day multi-sport event, is accepted as an appropriate "ongoing" entry.
- The Commonwealth Games was posted as an "ongoing" entry in 2014.
- Nominations for various multi-day single sport events for the "ongoing" section of ITN have failed, with seemingly only one exception.
- That exception is the Football World Cup, which was added to "ongoing" in 2014..

Notes
- Announced in 2000, only one of the seven prizes available has been awarded as of 2013
- Taken as the publication of the discovery in a peer-reviewed scientific journal
- In the event that the two organizations do not name them simultaneously, the official naming should only be posted once.
- In the past two decades nine new elements have been reported, and about five officially named.
- In previous years, the item has been added to ITN when the new members take their seats (1 January) rather than when the results were announced (during October). This is because the elections are not usually heavily competitive, and 1 January is in the middle of a very slow news period every year.
- Only those officially recognized by the Bureau International des Expositions and ExpoMuseum
- These are "both extremely rare (once in decades) and extremely hard to predict"
- There is no objective measure of exactly what constitutes a Great Comet, but ITN consensus is for 'clearly visible by naked eye even to those who weren't specifically looking for it'. See two sets of discussion at Misplaced Pages:In the news/Candidates/June 2010. Note Comet Holmes was considered significant enough for ITN when it brightened to mag +2.8, despite never receiving the 'Great' appellation.
- See List of solar eclipses in the 21st century for exact dates
- ^ Both the men's and women's results posted together.
- Usually including the World Series Most Valuable Player Award
- Usually including the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award
- Usually including the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award
- Usually including the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy
