On November 5, 2017, a mass shooting took place at the First Baptist Church in the small unincorporated community of Sutherland Springs, Texas, east of the city of San Antonio.

Shooting

A gunman, identified as Devin Patrick Kelley of Comal County, Texas, reportedly entered the church around 11:30 am CST and started firing. He was killed following a chase with local law enforcement through Guadalupe County, Texas.

FBI agents from a branch in nearby San Antonio were deployed to investigate, along with agents from Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Their investigation did not immediately reveal the gunman's motive nor rule out the possibility of multiple shooters.

‎Casualties

At least 20 people were killed, in addition to the perpetrator, and at least 24 people were injured. Early estimates had suggested at least 27 had died. The Sunday service is usually attended by approximately 50 individuals. There were children attending the service, and at least one child—the 14-year-old daughter of church pastor Frank Pomeroy—was among the victims.

Hospitals that received victims from the shooting included Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville, Texas; University Hospital in San Antonio; and Brooke Army Medical Center.

The shooting is the deadliest mass shooting at a church in U.S. history, surpassing the Charleston church shooting in 2015.

Suspect

The suspected shooter was identified as Devin Patrick Kelley. Kelley was dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force, and he was court martialed in May 2014.

Aftermath and reactions

President Donald Trump, who was in Japan at the time of the attack, tweeted: "May God be w/ the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI & law enforcement are on the scene. I am monitoring the situation from Japan."

Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz all responded via statements or tweets.
