Production
On 6 December 2016, B. Unnikrishnan announced that he would direct his next film based on his own screenplay with Mohanlal in the lead role. He completed the writing in over a period of two-and-a-half years with an estimated high production cost. The film was scheduled to start filming on 20 January 2017 and planned for a release by May, distributed by Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainments. It eventually got re-scheduled to start on March and release by July. On 26 January 2017, it was announced that Rockline Venkatesh will invest the film. The film was undergoing pre-production in that month.
Title Villain was announced by Mohanlal on 7 March 2017. Mohanlal plays a retired police officer in the film. Ravi Varma, Ram Laxman, and Action G are the stunt coordinators. According to Unnikrishnan, the film is an "investigative thriller".
Filming
The film's pooja function was held at the Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on 2 March 2017, with principal photography commencing in the following day in Kuravankonam, Thiruvananthapuram, with shots featuring Khanna. In the coming days, filming took place at the Merryland Studio and around Chala marketplace. An investigation office was created in set at the Merryland Studio. Art director was Gokuldas. Mohanlal joined on 5 March. Filming underwent at various places in and around Thiruvananthapuram during early March 2017. The schedule was expected to conclude by 20 March, after which the location will be shifted to Ernakulam. First schedule concluded on 19 March and second schedule began in Kochi on 24 March. Srikanth joined towards the end of this month. During the filming that progressed during April first week, Mohanlal was spotted with a different look. It was reported to be for some flashback scenes. Warrier joined on the Vishu day, on 14 April. The second schedule was concluded in Vagamon on 18 April 2017. Post-production began before commencing the final schedule.
After a month long schedule break, the final schedule began in June 2017 in Ernakulam. Vishal and Motwani joined in the first week. Vishal plays a doctor, some of his hospital scenes were shot at a location in Edappally. For filming a song sequence including Vishal and Motwani, a set was constructed in Ernakulam. Vishal spend a total of 20 days in the film. The team returned to Vagamon on 10 June to shoot the climax portions, where Mohanlal joined for a 10-day schedule. The filming concluded on 19 June 2017 in Vagamon. The complete filming process was initially planned to wrap within 50 – 55 shooting days. Editor was Shameer Mohammed, spot editing (editing on location) was employed in the film. Villain is the first Malayalam film to have colour grading done live on location during the filming process itself. In the film VFX has been used in 47 minutes of footage, which according to Unnikrishnan, is unrecognisable since it comes in the background of some natural scene. A Poland-based company was in charge with the film's visual effects department.
Villain is the first Indian film to be filmed completely in 8K resolution. Red's Weapon Helium 8K S35 camera was used in the film. As of 2017, no theatres in Kerala are equipped with 8K projection with only a few even having 4K. Addressing it Unnikrishnan said, most of the Indian films are filmed in 1.8K resolution and are upscaled to 2K or 4K for theatre screening, which result in quality loss. Filming in 8K can resolve this as downscaling to 2K or 4K will not compromise quality and gives high sharpness to visuals. 8K camera can also provides a larger field of view which benefit the visual pattern used in Villain. Unnikrishnan chose Zeiss Otus lens to use in the camera, which is originally used in still cameras. With cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa he conducted test shoots 3 – 4 months prior to filming. His inference was, Otus lens, having high sensitivity and sharpness will multiply the workload of a focus puller, but will compensate with a greater output. Low lighting was extensively used in the film and the film have no static shots.
Soundtrack
Film score was composed by Sushin Shyam. The original soundtrack of the film consists of five tracks composed by the music group 4 Musics (Jim Jacob, Biby Matthew, Eldhose Alias, and Justin James). All songs were written by B. K. Harinarayanan, except "Angakale Chengathiraniye" by Engandiyur Chandrasekharan. The music rights of Villain was bought by the label Junglee Music for a record amount of ₹50 lakh for a Malayalam film. Dubbing right of the songs were sold for ₹1 crore. The soundtrack album was released digitally and in DVD on 13 September 2017, a music launch function was held for the occasion at Kochi. Besides acting, Khanna made her singing debut recording the title track of the film in April 2017.

Critical response
Rating 3 out of 5 stars, Sanjith Sidhardhan of The Times of India said: "Mohanlal as the veteran cop, who has endured pain but masks it, showcases his finesse as an actor. One of the strengths of the film is that it doesn't bank on his superstar image and rather focuses on the narrative, which at times is choppy at best ... BGM by Sushin Shyam adds to the tense scenes and the action sequences too are choreographed well".
Prem Udayabhanu from Malayala Manorama rated 3 out of 5 stars, writing "Only Mohanlal can enact the lingering pain of a personal tragedy with such subdued finesse ... the cop doesn't falter in his clinical observations to join the dots, but that is not the case with the narrative of Villain. Perhaps the emphasis of the filmmakers was on its treatment and on that count it is a justified attempt".
Awarding 3 in a scale of 5, Meera Suresh from The New Indian Express wrote: "Many might criticise Villain for its slow pace, which is disappointing for a cop story. But, then, when a movie deals with 'grey areas' of life, it is not easy to be taut and steady ... Mohanlal's latest may not be a thrilling edge-of-the-seat outing, but it takes a different route, one that is enjoyable". Calling Mohanlal's performance "brilliant", she added his "subdued performance lifts the character to another level".
Indo-Asian News Service's critic awarded 3 out of 5 stars and commented: "Villain works fine as long as it doesn't begin to lean on Hollywood prototypes. The indigenous strain is well woven into the thriller ... the director never lets his characters lose track of their place in the jigsaw", the film is "very handsomely mounted and shot" and "builds on Mohanlal's power to express rage and grief without letting go", the critic also appreciated Vishal's performance. Manoj Kumar R. of The Indian Express rated 2.5 out of 5 stars and commented that the film "has some well written and well-shot scenes that establish the mood of the character. Mohanlal is convincing as a dejected copy, who is stuck in the past and looking for a reason to continue living ... the screenplay is intriguing and sets in an element of suspense". He also praised the performance of Vishal.
Directors N. Lingusamy, Mysskin, Pandiraj, Thiru, and Suseenthiran were all positive about the film, particularly praising the actors' performances and the making. S. R. Praveen wrote in The Hindu: "B. Unnikrishnan's attempt here was not to deliver a straight, taut thriller, but to build a slow-burner, with an emotional family drama and the unravelling of a psycho killer all weaved together. But it is too much load to carry for a script that is short on imagination". Rating 2 out of 5 stars, Priyanka Sundar from Hindustan Times felt the film is slow, saying "the slow pace, heavy dialogues and disconnected character arc take the thrill out of this investigative thriller", she also criticised the script and Vishal's performance.
