He claimed that Bakhshi had a fight with agents during his arrest and transfer to prison and there were no actual torture. Esmail Bakhshi (Persian: اسماعیل بخشی) is an Iranian trade unionist and a founding member and spokesman for the independent Workers Union of Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Agro Industrial Company (Persian: شرکت نیشکر هفت‌تپه) in the Khuzestan Province of Iran.

On November 18, 2018 Esmail Bakhshi was arrested, together with more than a dozen other workers, during labor protests at the local sugar factory in the Iranian city of Shush. All of those arrested were soon released on bail with the notable exception of Esmail Bakhshi who was held, without charge or legal representation, on the suspicion of crimes against "national security". The Iranian Ministry of Labor announced that it is unable to intervene on Bakhshi's behalf because of the nature of the case.

The workers of Haft Tappeh Sugarcane were protesting several months of unpaid wages following the privatization of the company, with no transparency or oversight, by the Iranian officials.

On November 29, 2018 The Vahed Syndicate, revealed in a statement that Esmail Bakhshi had been briefly hospitalized due to torture he had suffered while in government custody.

Torture

Esmaeil Bakhshi, is an Iranian worker, labor activist, political prisoner and the Haft Tappeh Sugarcane factory workers’ representative. He was arrested in November 2018, during a labor demonstration in Khuzestan. He played a major role in organizing protests by Haft-Tappeh workers, against the privatization of the factory and his most important demand was management by council (workers’ council). On November 24, 2018, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs announced that he is accused of national security charges and it can't have him released. (1)(2) His arrest caused protests from other workers. (3) On November 29, it was reported that he had been hospitalized due to torture in prison.

Letter to Mahmoud Alavi

On January 4, Esmail Bakhshi posted a note on his instagram page, also confirming his torture in prison, invited Mahmoud Alavi, minister of intelligence, to a live television show discussing torturing prisoners in prisons. Bakhshi also stated in this note, that his telephone was being tapped by security agencies, while he was talking with his family.

Esmail Bakhshi stated about extreme mental and physical tortures on himself and Sepideh Gholian, within first days of his arrest:

Within the first days, without any talking or reasoning i was beaten and tortured me. the result of which being that i couldn't move for 72 hours in my cell. I was in so much pain that i couldn't even sleep. Even today after almost 2 months after that time, i still feel a lot of pain in my broken limbs, my kidneys, my left ear, and my testicles. They sexually insulted both me and Sepideh Gholian, and they beat her too.

Reactions

Mohammad Kazemi, one of the members of the legal and judicial commission of Islamic Consultative Assembly, reacted to this letter from Bakhshi. Kazemi stated in a discussion with Iranian Labour News Agency (ILNA), that torture is not allowed by The Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran , thus there should be juridical case for Bakhshi's claims. He also mentioned that if Bakhshi's claims are proved to be true, accused people should be called for the case.

Gholamreza Shariati,current governor of Khuzestan Province, denied Bakhshi's torture in prison in a discussion with Jamaran (One of the government's news agencies).

This letter also triggered reactions from social media. There are handful of civil activists and former political prisoners and political activists such as, Sadegh Zibakalam also reacting to this letter. These activists criticized Hassan Rouhani and Mahmoud Alavi's actions.

Also 34 student associations (Islamic Association of Students), in reaction to Bakhshi's claims, in a letter to Mahmoud alavi, asked for a debate with both Bakhshi and Alavi discussing tortures on Bakhshi.

Ali Motahari, vice president of Islamic Consultative Assembly, reacted to Bakhshi's claims in a discussion with Etemad newspaper. He stated that The Ministry of Intelligence of the Islamic Republic of Iran should come clear about these claims. He mentioned that if Bakhshi's claims are proven to be true, criminals should be punished for it. Motahari stated that if Ministry of Intelligence doesn't get involved in the subject, Consultative Assembly will.

On January 6, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ezhe'i, Iran's spokesman for the judiciary, reacted to these claims. He answered Iranian Labour News Agency (ILNA)'s question about the topic saying that: "I heard they wrote a letter to Ministry of Intelligence and if anyone broke the law they'll solve the issue."

On January 8, Hesamodin Ashna, Hassan Rouhani 's consultant, reacted to these claims on his telegram channel. He said that president ordered further investigating on Esmail Bakhshi's case.
