During the 1993 investigation, Jackson hired private investigator ] and released a recorded telephone conversation between Chandler and Dave Schwartz, the new husband of his ex-wife, June, and stepfather to Jordan. Jackson's defense cited this tape as proof that Chandler's allegations were nothing but an attempt to extort money from the star and regain custody of Jordan, especially considering Chandler was more than $60,000 behind child support payments and had already approached Jackson several times asking for money. Chandler was recorded saying, "If I go through with this, I win big time. There's no way that I lose. I've checked that out inside out...I will get everything I want, and they will be totally — they will be destroyed forever. They will be destroyed. June is gonna lose Jordy. Evan Chandler (born Evan Robert Charmatz; January 25, 1944 – November 5, 2009) was a Los Angeles based dentist. In 1993, Chandler and his son Jordan accused pop singer Michael Jackson of child molestation. The civil lawsuit for sexual battery filed by the Chandlers was settled out of court by Michael Jackson for a reported U.S. $23 million in January 1994. Chandler committed suicide following a long battle with Gaucher's disease.

Early life and career

Evan Robert Charmatz was born in 1944 in Bronx, New York.

Chandler was a prominent Beverly Hills, California dentist.

Chandler also co-wrote the 1993 comedy film Robin Hood: Men in Tights. The idea for the film came from his son Jordan while Chandler was tending to J. David Shapiro.

Accusations against Michael Jackson and settlement

In 1993, Chandler and his son Jordan accused pop star Michael Jackson of child molestation. The 1993 molestation case ended after Jackson reached a settlement with Chandler for a reported U.S. $23 million.

Post-trial and death

Chandler's residence Liberty View Towers (towers to the left), where he lived until his death in 2009 in Jersey City, NJ.

During the 1993 investigation, Jackson hired infamous convict private investigator Anthony Pellicano (known as the "Hollywood Sin-Eater") to deal with the Chandler allegations. Pellicano attempted to frame the Chandlers as extortionists.

Pellicano released to the press out of context statements from multiple recorded telephone conversations between Chandler and Dave Schwartz, the new husband of his ex-wife, June Chandler. "If I go through with this, I win big time. There's no way that I lose. I've checked that out inside out...I will get everything I want, and they will be totally — they will be destroyed forever."

Pellicano had purposely spliced the reccordings and withheld statements by Chandler such as "the only goal is right now I have to do what I think is best for Jordy", "The bottom line to me is, yes, June is harming him, and Michael is harming him. I can prove that, and I will prove that" and "I love him (Jordan) so much that I’m willing to destroy my own life to protect him. The full transcript of the call showed a father who was upset about what was happening between his son and Michael Jackson and angry at his wife June who at the time had full custody of Jordan and was not taking his concerns seriously.

The tapes were handed over to the Los Angeles Police Department. Following a criminal investigation into Chandler, deputy Los Angeles County District Attorney Montagna released a public statement stating no evidence of extortion was found.

"We’ve declined to file today criminal charges of attempted extortion. The evidence does not show that any crime (extortion) has been committed."

Following the allegations, it was reported that Chandler had multiple plastic surgeries to mask his identity as he claimed threats, abuse and harassment from Michael Jackson fans.

According to a USA Today article written by journalist DeWayne Wickham, in 1996, Chandler attempted to sue Jackson a second time, citing the star's HiStory album as a breach of the settlement agreement.

In 2004, Chandler's brother Raymond released a book All that Glitters: The Crime and the Cover-Up, about the 1993 allegations following a new set of molestation accusations against Jackson.

In the 2005 trial, Chandler's ex-wife June Chandler testified for the prosecution against Jackson. June Chandler denied Jackson's defence team suggestion that she took the molestation allegations to a lawyer before going to police. June testified she went to child welfare authorities, where Jordan made a report to officers working there on August 7th 1993.

In 2006, court documents filed in the state of New Jersey revealed that Chandler was sued by Jordan after an assault in August 2005 whilst Evan was suffering violent mood swings caused by his Gaucher's disease. It was falsely reported that Jordan obtained a permanent restraining order against his father as a result.. The restraining order was not granted

Evan Chandler committed suicide on November 5, 2009 having suffered for many years with Gaucher's Disease, in Jersey City, New Jersey by a self-inflicted wound. He left no suicide note, but officers did find medication in keeping with a serious medical condition.
