Since 1917, BMW has been producing engines for cars, motorcycles, and aircraft, when production began on a straight-six aircraft engine.
Automotive petrol engines
As per many other manufacturers, BMW has produced automotive petrol engines in the following layouts: straight-four engines and V8 engines .
BMW is also well known for its history of straight-six engines (instead of the V6 engine layout, which has replaced the straight-six engine layout for most other manufacturers). It has also produced engines in the following layouts: inline-three engines , V10 engines and V12 engines .
BMW has produced fifty-six automotive petrol engines, nine of which are still in production.
