Suqovuşan, also spelled as Sugovushan, formerly Madagiz (Template:Lang-hy; Template:Lang-az), is a village in the Tartar District of Azerbaijan. The village was under the control of the de facto independent Republic of Artsakh from 10 April 1994 until 3 October 2020, when it was captured by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

It is located 30 kilometers north-west of the left bank of the river Tartar. There is a secondary school in the village. To the west of the village lies the Suqovuşan reservoir, which was created to supply water to the Tatar, Goranboy, and Yevlakh Districts of Azerbaijan.

As of 2005, the village had a population of 404 people. According to the State Committee for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons of Azerbaijan, as of 2020, 66 internally displaced persons from Sugovushan were living in Azerbaijan.

History

In 1943, the village, known as Madagiz was given the status of an urban-type settlement within the Mardakert District of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. In 1949, the village was home to an industrial complex, including a furniture factory and a lime production workshop. In 1953, a secondary school was opened. The Madagiz hydroelectric power station was built nearby on the banks of the Tartar River. In 1970, 271 people (236 Armenians, 30 Azerbaijanis, 44 Russians and nine Ukrainians) lived in the village.

In the early 1990s, Madagiz found itself within the territory of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, and consequently was affected by hostilities between the Armed Forces of Armenia and the Azerbaijani Armed Forces. During the summer offensive of 1992, Azerbaijani troops established control over the Mardakert District, but as a result of the counter-offensive by the end of June 1993, Armenian troops managed to occupy almost the entire district.

In April 2016, during the Four-Day War, the village found itself in the area of direct hostilities. On April 4, Armenian journalists published video and photo reports from Madagiz. On April 5, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan reported that on April 4, the headquarters of the Artsakh military base in Madagiz had been hit.
