Roger Lynn was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. After graduating from Central High School, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota. Graduation from seminary in 1963 led to ordination in the Methodist Church and a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett Theological Seminary.

Rev. Lynn's appointment as 'Minister of Education' at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church ended in 1967 when "his opposition to the Vietnam War" found himself "in conflict" with the power structure. Then, a transfer to street ministry ended in 1971 after he "performed the wedding" between two men because "it was the right thing to do."

For the next ten years, Rev. Lynn provided residential treatment for chronic mentally ill young adults as Director of a facility for People Incorporated. Upon return to ministry full-time, he served the Long Prairie and Grey Eagle United Methodist Churches (five years) and the Walker Church in Minneapolis’ Powderhorn Neighborhood (nine years). Before retiring, he served part-time as 'Minister of Pastoral Care' (two years) at the Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, where members celebrated the marriage ceremony he performed in 1971 to bind the male couple who, after 52 years, "still live together" in Minneapolis.
