In the future (in about two weeks), in a dystopian Endsville, an evil being known as the "Lord of Horror" orders robotic duplicates, Billybot and Mandroid, to go back in time to eliminate Billy and Mandy and prevent them from reaching a powerful hand-like artifact in the Lord of Horror's possession before his past self does. Billy and Irwin of this time hope their past selves can stop the Lord of Horror's evil plans.

===Prologue===
Endsville, two weeks in the future. The all powerful "Lord of Horror", possessor of Horror's Hand, sends robot replicas of Billy and Mandy (called Billybot and Mandroid) to the present. They are to stop the two from obtaining the Hand. Future Irwin and Billy watch. Billy explains that he was going to go to the present himself, but had been too distracted by the opening credits of the movie. His backup plan, another time machine, is actually a drawing of policemen fighting a dinosaur.

Two weeks prior, ] is sued for ] and misuse of his abilities by his old rival, the ], the former having failed to reap General Skarr (who had accidentally created a hole in his chest) thanks to an intervention from Billy and Mandy. Grim and the children are set to be exiled by the Underworld Court and placed in the custody of Boogey, with Grim being stripped of his job and powers and Numbuh 3 from '']'' becoming his ] replacement. Boogey reveals it was part of his plan to steal Horror's Hand, an artifact capable of bringing people's deepest fears to life and transforming anyone who conquers their fear into the scariest and most powerful being in existence; Boogey himself believes that with its power, children will fear him once again. The group eventually escapes and plans to obtain the Hand for themselves for various reasons.
In the present, the Grim Reaper travels next door to take the soul of General Skarr, who now has a huge gaping hole in his stomach. Skarr refuses to go and manages to escape in his vehicle. Its weapons delay a pursuing Grim and tagalongs Billy and Mandy. Skarr finally escapes by transforming his vehicle into sub form. He sees another button and curiously presses it. A laser emerge and blasts him, straight through the hole in his stomach. Skarr then realizes what had happened to his stomach.

After Grim and the children barely escape from a pair of blind ] and rescue Mandy from Boogey when he kidnaps her, both groups eventually reach where the Hand is held, where they meet Horror the Ancient, a living statue and source of the Hand, having channeled his fears within it and cutting it off in an attempt to make himself brave. To obtain the Hand, the two rivaling groups must embark on a race across the Cannibal Run - the most dangerous section of the River ] - as well as facing their worst fears. Grim and the children win and scrape to obtain the Hand. Billy, Irwin and Mandy are easily subdued by their respective worst nightmares, leaving Grim to claim the Hand unaffected, revealing he goes through his worst nightmare every day — being forced to live with Billy and Mandy. The Hand however is almost immediately stolen by Boogey who uses it to scare Grim so badly that he explodes. Believing he has won, Boogey is shocked when Grim promptly reforms himself and laughs at Boogey for thinking he was capable of scaring him. When everyone else joins in laughing at him, Boogey realizes the Hand is making ''his'' worst nightmare a reality — confronting the fact that he is not scary at all. He subsequently suffers a series of humiliating accidents as he desperately insists that he IS scary while everyone there hysterically laughs at him, after which Grim reveals he had actually turned the Hand's power off right after he picked it up, to make Boogey ''think'' his fear had come to life, ultimately proving Boogey ''wasn't ever scary at all''. Mistaking Fred Fredburger's comments about nachos for actual philosophical advice, Billy has an epiphany that he and his friends obtained what they wanted without the need for Horror's Hand.
===Grim's Trial===
Back at Billy's house, the Underworld Police take Grim away for the crime of abusing his powers. The jury includes Dracula, Frankenstein’s Bride, Wolf man, Fred Fredburger, a Pale Ghoulish Juror, a mud ghoul, Darth Vader, The Invisible Man, and two unknown citizens. To everyone’s surprise, Boogeyman is the prosecutor and is ] Grim for abusing his powers. Boogey mentions the following people who stole Grim's scythe: Jack O' Lantern; Billy; Mandy; Irwin; Billy's Dad; Billy's Mom; Billy's cousin (not Nergal Junior); Milkshakes; Dracula; General Scar; Principal Goodvibes; Mr's Clause; The Secret Snake Club; The Army; Scout Troup 701; The Sleestaks; The President; The Mailman; The Dingle Schmidt Sisters; The Boogey Man (himself); a llama; a turkey salad sandwich ("hold the mayo!").

After the Underworld Court arrive to finish Boogey's business of banishing Grim forever, Mandy demands them to reinstate Grim as the Grim Reaper because he saved the world from a future ruled by Boogey, which the court agrees to in part because Numbuh 3 was too much of an optimist to actually reap anyone in their view. In the end, Billy from the future appears before them to warn that if Mandy had used Horror's Hand, she would have taken over the world in two weeks, becoming the Lord of Horror from his time. Grim decides to put the Hand in his trunk to ensure that that future never comes to pass. Subsequently, Boogey is discovered to have become afraid of everything having suffered "]" during his humliation. Future Billy eventually goes back to the future to make sure that things were set right.
In the end, Grim is found guilty and the Boogeyman agrees to take him and the kids to exile while Numbuh 3 from ] temporarily becomes the new Reaper on a six week trial.

The ] show what each character did after the events of the film, such as General Skarr using the hole in his chest to keep birds, Mandy becoming the new captain of Boogey's ship, Numbuh 3 starting her own Reaper-for-hire service (which results in people laughing at her), Dracula stealing Grim's scythe for use as a golf club, Irwin being bedridden for getting infected with ] and cooties after kissing Mandy, Billy eventually becoming ] and Boogey living in fear ever since his defeat.
===Boogeyman's Evil Plan===
Boogey’s ship, transporting Billy, Mandy, and Grim, makes its way to the Lava Sea where Boogey plans to feed the children to Lava Sharks. Boogey reveals his plot to steal Horror’s Hand, the most powerful object in existence. This object is ultimately more powerful than Grim's scythe. If one comes in contact with it, they will be confronted by their worst fears; but if those fears are conquered, one can obtain it. The hand is capable of transforming its holder into the scariest and most powerful being in existence - a move that would fulfill his wish of becoming the most terrifying being on Earth.

The ] shows how Billy went back to the future to find that it has not changed as Fred Fredburger has obtained Horror's Hand from Grim's magic trunk and took over the world as the new Lord of Horror, having conquered his fear of running out of nachos.
Boogey first sends Billy to walk the plank and if he falls, he will be ] by the Lava Sharks below. Billy reveals that he is not scared as long as the sharks don’t eat him and begins to sing ], making a distraction while Mandy and the rest of the captives ]. Irwin, Mandy, and Grim make their escape on a getaway boat.

Boogey is first to go through the gate to Horror’s Hand and claims that Billy and Mandy must go through the Cyclops to get to the gate themselves. The group decides to stop Boogey and claim Horror’s Hand. Unfortunately, they each have separate plans for its use. Mandy wants to rule the world with the hand, Billy wants to buy food, Irwin wants to marry Mandy, and Grim could reclaim his role as Grim Reaper and get his scythe back. The group meets a little Cyclops with no eye who calls his friend, a giant orange Cyclops, to "test" the children. This test is however revealed to be tasting the children by the Cyclops which they "pass", ending up cooking in a giant soup. Mandy, in an attempt to escape, claims that Billy urinated in the soup. Which causes the Cyclops to take them out and check. Mandy makes use of the opportunity to jump out and steal the bigger Cyclops’ eye. There is a fight and the eye ends up in Billy’s stomach. It turns out that the eye is used also for Boogeyman to see the group. Boogeyman turns his head into disgust as he looks where the eye goes. Creeper offers to build robot replicas of the children and shows Boogeyman the blueprints. Suddenly, Mandroid and Billybot from the future appear and offer to help Boogeyman destroy Mandy and Billy. The group run away from the Cyclops Cove and discover a giant cake as they run near the getaway ship. Mandy is suspicious but a crazy Irwin and Billy stuff the cake into Mandy and Grim’s mouths. Suddenly, the rest of the group fall into a sleep and Mandy soon follows into the trance. Inside the cake, Mandroid comes out of the cake’s hatch and reveals that she plans on taking the brains of the group. The group is having a hive mind dream when Boogeyman comes in and kidnaps Mandy.

The Boogeyman laughs as a mad Irwin storms in and beats up all the pirates. Grim tells Billy that love makes people do stupid things. Boogeyman sends the Kracken to go after the four.

That, along with creating the regular season was challenging for him. Boogey Man was chosen as the ] for the film because he was a lesser villain that had a relationship with Grim. This was because Atoms was given the idea to follow a storyline similar to '']'' by a Cartoon Network representative.

The role of Numbuh 3 was originally supposed to be taken up by an entirely new Grim Reaper character, with Atoms having ] in mind for the character, as one of the crew members worked on '']''. Anderson was contacted and expressed interest for the role, but was ultimately rejected by the studio's casting department thinking that the actress wasn't marketable enough.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Atoms |first=Maxwell |author-link=Maxwell Atoms |date=February 28, 2022 |title=We're there any potential celebrities that you wanted to get for Billy and Mandy but couldn't due to unavailability or lack of interest? The group climbs up the long stairs of the temple. About halfway up, Billy claims he can see his Grandmother's house from this vantage point. The others do not believe him and move on. Billy waves to his grandmother down below and follows.

Unable to decide on finding an actor to play the role in time for production, Atoms decided to use a character from a Cartoon Network series and picked Hoagie Gilligan (a.k.a. Numbuh 2) from ''Codename: Kids Next Door'' to serve as Grim’s replacement because his childish innocence would serve as contrast to the role of the Grim Reaper, and his presence would also serve as a tease for the upcoming crossover special ''The Grim Adventures of the Kids Next Door''. However, at the suggestion of that show’s creator, ], this was changed to Numbuh 3 taking Grim’s place. Atoms also used some Nintendo references in the later part of this TV movie, such as when Boogey Man ] Mandy he makes a "warp pipe" appear and its ] is used when he goes into it.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Fritz |first=Steve |date=March 27, 2007 |title=Animated Shorts: Maxwell Atoms |url=http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t%3D106645 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071014111633/http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=106645 |archive-date=2007-10-14 |access-date=2008-08-19 |website=Newsarama.com}}</ref>
Horror is a living statue. He had removed his left hand and placed all his fears inside. It did not exactly work, as he developed new fears. Horror spends his time with online gaming and learning to play the guitar with his teeth.

It is Voltaire's second collaboration for ''The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy'', the first being on the episode "Little Rock of Horrors" with the song "]"; "Land of the Dead" would later feature as the opening track of Voltaire's albums '']'' and '']''. The film's end credits also feature "]" by ]. The film is most famous for its original song "Scary-O".
===Cannibal Run===
Boogeyman's forces appear and Billy is soon eaten by the Kracken. Boogey decides to hold a river race called the Cannibal Run. The winner will have to fight Horror for the right to the hand. Grim's very small boat seems unwinnable next to Boogey's legged ship. The two sides prepare. Billy hasn't resurfaced yet and Mandy thinks he might actually be dead this time. Billy appears, having made friends with the Kracken.

The race starts. Throughout it, the team become puppets, destroys a sea witch with laser guns, glue their boat back together with snot after its cut to pieces, and even get attacked by Japanese movie monsters (Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Anguirus, Rodan, Gigan and Gamera). After all that, Team Grim wins and easily defeats Horror with Mandy tearing off Billy's nose and throwing it at his head.

The film received generally positive reviews from critics. However, Boogey uses the Horror Hand against them, and the group tries to face their worst fears, as Billy faces a clown spider mailman (or is it a clown mail spider), Irwin faces stand up comedy jokes to bears, and Mandy faces an older version of herself who has lost her toughness, overweight, and married to Irwin. But Grim is the only one who conquers them as he lives his nightmare every day: living with Billy and Mandy. After Grim picks up the hand, Boogeyman steals the hand - but is defeated by his worst fear: discovering that he’s not scary and getting laughed by everybody. Grim later reveals that he turned the Hand off and Boogeyman now is living his life in his fears.

The police come in and Judge Roy Spleen tries to banish Grim, but Mandy threatens the Judge so he decides to give Grim his job back and fire Numbuh 3 (although he remarks that Numbah 3 was a great reaper in her own way). Numbah 3 vows to get revenge on Grim if it’s the last thing she does. When Fred Fredburger says that "If I hadn't tried to eat all of the nachos, I never would have known I could", the team learns a valuable lesson: that they got what they wanted without having the Hand. Grim saved the world even without the scythe, Mandy got her own way once again, Irwin finally got to kiss his true love, and Billy is getting a new bike for Christmas.

===The Future Billy===
{{Wikiquote}}
To everybody’s surprise, future Billy teleports into the temple and reveals that in the future Mandy stole the hand and become Lord Horror the supreme master of existence, just as Mandy gets hypnotized by it and seeing future Billy, nude, makes her trance go away. Mandy merely shrugs and hands the hand back to Grim. Grim is forced to put the Hand somewhere. Grim decides to put the Hand in his trunk. The group returns home with future-Billy saying his farewells. Billy asks what he’s going to have for lunch next Tuesday and future Billy says, “I could tell you but then I would have to kill you." Mandy orders Grim to make dinner. Meanwhile, Billybot and now more realistic Mandroid order their own servant, Creeper to serve his drinks.
* {{IMDb title}}

After the end credits, future Billy returns to his time to see that nothing has changed. He gets grabbed by robots, and sees that Fred Fredburger stole the hand and became Lord Horror. Fred says that his worst nightmare was running out of nachos. He then spells nachos N-A-C-H-O-Z, says his trademark "Yes!", and the movie ends.

*Billy: Becomes the president
*Mandy: Becomes captain of Boogey's ship
*Boogey: Lives in fear to this very day
*Creeper: Made a fortune selling his invention Time Traveling Pants
*]: Tried to become a reaper again but with no success.

Billy & Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure is a 2007 American made-for-television animated adventure fantasy comedy film produced by Cartoon Network Studios, and is the first made-for-television film based on the animated series The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, the second being Billy & Mandy: Wrath of the Spider Queen. Big Boogey Adventure premiered in the United States on March 30, 2007, and in the UK on February 14, 2007, and was released on DVD in the U.S. on April 3, 2007.

The events of the film take place during the sixth and final season of The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy.

Plot

In the future (in about two weeks), in a dystopian Endsville, an evil being known as the "Lord of Horror" orders robotic duplicates, Billybot and Mandroid, to go back in time to eliminate Billy and Mandy and prevent them from reaching a powerful hand-like artifact in the Lord of Horror's possession before his past self does. Billy and Irwin of this time hope their past selves can stop the Lord of Horror's evil plans.

Two weeks prior, Grim is sued for dereliction of duty and misuse of his abilities by his old rival, the Boogey Man, the former having failed to reap General Skarr (who had accidentally created a hole in his chest) thanks to an intervention from Billy and Mandy. Grim and the children are set to be exiled by the Underworld Court and placed in the custody of Boogey, with Grim being stripped of his job and powers and Numbuh 3 from Codename: Kids Next Door becoming his court-appointed replacement.

After Grim and the children barely escape from a pair of blind cyclopses and rescue Mandy from Boogey when he kidnaps her, both groups eventually reach where the Hand is held, where they meet Horror the Ancient, a living statue and source of the Hand, having channeled his fears within it and cutting it off in an attempt to make himself brave. To obtain the Hand, the two rivaling groups must embark on a race across the Cannibal Run - the most dangerous section of the River Styx - as well as facing their worst fears. When everyone else joins in laughing at him, Boogey realizes the Hand is making his worst nightmare a reality — confronting the fact that he is not scary at all. He subsequently suffers a series of humiliating accidents as he desperately insists that he IS scary while everyone there hysterically laughs at him, after which Grim reveals he had actually turned the Hand's power off right after he picked it up, to make Boogey think his fear had come to life, ultimately proving Boogey wasn't ever scary at all. Mistaking Fred Fredburger's comments about nachos for actual philosophical advice, Billy has an epiphany that he and his friends obtained what they wanted without the need for Horror's Hand.

Subsequently, Boogey is discovered to have become afraid of everything having suffered "a few too many hits on the noggin" during his humliation. Future Billy eventually goes back to the future to make sure that things were set right.

The credits show what each character did after the events of the film, such as General Skarr using the hole in his chest to keep birds, Mandy becoming the new captain of Boogey's ship, Numbuh 3 starting her own Reaper-for-hire service (which results in people laughing at her), Dracula stealing Grim's scythe for use as a golf club, Irwin being bedridden for getting infected with mono and cooties after kissing Mandy, Billy eventually becoming President of the United States and Boogey living in fear ever since his defeat.

The epilogue shows how Billy went back to the future to find that it has not changed as Fred Fredburger has obtained Horror's Hand from Grim's magic trunk and took over the world as the new Lord of Horror, having conquered his fear of running out of nachos.

Cast

Production

Maxwell Atoms originally pitched "Billy & Mandy vs. the Martians" as a direct-to-video film, but Cartoon Network did not want a science fiction theme, and the pitch was made into a standard episode of the series. Creating the film was the first time that Atoms had created anything with a length of over one hour. That, along with creating the regular season was challenging for him. Boogey Man was chosen as the villain for the film because he was a lesser villain that had a relationship with Grim. This was because Atoms was given the idea to follow a storyline similar to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan by a Cartoon Network representative.

The role of Numbuh 3 was originally supposed to be taken up by an entirely new Grim Reaper character, with Atoms having Pamela Anderson in mind for the character, as one of the crew members worked on Stripperella. Anderson was contacted and expressed interest for the role, but was ultimately rejected by the studio's casting department thinking that the actress wasn't marketable enough. Atoms created a shortlist of alternatives, including Marilyn Manson, Drew Barrymore, and Elijah Wood, while Cartoon Network proposed more high-profile actors such as Angelina Jolie.

Unable to decide on finding an actor to play the role in time for production, Atoms decided to use a character from a Cartoon Network series and picked Hoagie Gilligan (a.k.a. Numbuh 2) from Codename: Kids Next Door to serve as Grim’s replacement because his childish innocence would serve as contrast to the role of the Grim Reaper, and his presence would also serve as a tease for the upcoming crossover special The Grim Adventures of the Kids Next Door. However, at the suggestion of that show’s creator, Tom Warburton, this was changed to Numbuh 3 taking Grim’s place. Atoms also used some Nintendo references in the later part of this TV movie, such as when Boogey Man kidnaps Mandy he makes a "warp pipe" appear and its SFX is used when he goes into it.

The title track "Land of the Dead" was written and performed by Voltaire. It is Voltaire's second collaboration for The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, the first being on the episode "Little Rock of Horrors" with the song "Brains!"; "Land of the Dead" would later feature as the opening track of Voltaire's albums Ooky Spooky and Spooky Songs for Creepy Kids. The film's end credits also feature "Boogie Wonderland" by Earth, Wind & Fire. The film is most famous for its original song "Scary-O".

Home media

The film was released on DVD by Warner Home Video in the United States on April 3, 2007. The DVD contains both anamorphic wide screen and modified full screen versions with 5.1 surround sound and regular stereo sound. Special features include the season three episode "Bully Boogie" -Boogey's debut episode- and interviews with the voice actors. As of 2023, it has yet to be available to stream on iTunes, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max (except in Latin America).

Reception

The film received generally positive reviews from critics. Dennis Prince of DVD Verdict reviewed the movie saying, "All told, Billy & Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure is a gift from Atoms, and an indulgence of all the goodness and gooeyness that has made the series a top draw on Cartoon Network. Despite the boogers, bare buttocks, and boorish humor, this court finds no real crime has been committed. Case dismissed". MaryAnn Johanson of the Flick Filospher reviewed the movie saying "'Full-length movie. Full of boogers!' promises the blobby green sticker on the DVD. And it's true. But somehow, the tons of gross-out potty humor manages to be delightfully goofy -- perhaps it's the irresistibly cheerful spin cartoonist Maxwell Atoms puts on his demented twisting of kiddie cartoons" It was nominated for an Annie Award for Best Music in an Animated Television Production. Common Sense Media gave the movie 2/5 stars and is meant for kids over the age of 8 calling it "undeniably gross and just as undeniably funny".
