I have added an image which shows the evolution of Kannada script. It is taken from an old book and it is already torn. Hope it may be helpful to everyone who is interested in the language. Also I created an article called "Karnataka history timeline". Check it out if possible.
Thank you very much for your effort, I will work on them all. Now I know how your Karnataka team is going from strength to strength. "Kannada literature in the Kingdom of Mysore is a body of literature composed from about 1600 CE, the date of the earliest known work" is a contardiction to the section "Literature prior to 16th century". ==Spelling variations==
Per our recent discussion on ], here is a list of potential spelling inconsistencies in the first FA on your list ]. I have attempted to eliminate variations which appear valid in the article's context, but may have missed one or more.
*Ranaranga <-> Ranaraga
*Vijayanaka <-> Vijayanka
*Natyasastra <-> Natyashastra
*Harithiputhras <-> Harithiputras
*Satyashraya <-> Satyasraya (it's a bit hard to tell from context whether this is the same thing or not)
*Vikramanakadeva <-> Vikramankadeva, and relatedly,
*Vikramankadeva Charita <-> Vikramanakadevacharita <-> Vikramanakadevacharitam
Good luck in figuring out what needs to be changed to which. ] 23:47, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

==] spelling== | |||

After all your hard work, only the ] spelling list is left to do, so here is another list to choose as an alternate.
*Rashtrakutas and Rastrakutas, similarly,
*Rashtrakuta and Rastrakuta (empire)
*Prathihara and Pratiharas
*(Ibn) Khurdadba and Kurdadba
*Rashtraudha and Rastraudha (dynasty)
*Kailasanath and Kailasanatha (Temple )
*Arikeseri and Arikesari (can't tell if they should be the same, I think they are different people but possibly of the same lineage).
*Begumra and Bagumra (one is in reference to plates, the other in reference to records, so this might be correct)
*Torkhede and Tarkhede (inscriptions of Govinda III )
Not many on your FA list to check after this one. ] (]) 01:19, 6 December 2007 (UTC

== Kamat's book == | ||
Do you know if there are substantial differences between the 2001 edition (the one used in the ] article) and the original 1980 version of the Kamat book? The 1980 version has a mere 11 pages on Mysore between 1399 and 1799 and I'm having a hard time reconciling the text of the article with the material in the book (I don't have access to the 2001 version). Thanks! --] <small>(])</small> 21:14, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Dear Dinesh: Just got discouraged. Will stay available to you and your Indian colleagues, but hope to cut back a bit on what is becoming an addiction. ] (]) 09:01, 14 December 2007 (UTC)Writtenright
:Not sure how much difference there could be. I can check later on when I get home. Also, if you can tell me which part of the article and which sentences you are having trouble reconciling, we can get together and resolve it. There has been lots of paraphrasing and copy editing done, in addition to usage of other books (Subrahmanyam and Chopra etc). We can however go over this one at a time and see what has changed or how to re-phrase it.Regards, ] (]) 21:49, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
::I'll try. But, since the page numbers are totally different, it's hard. Let me know the length of the section on Wodeyars before 1799 in the 2001 edition. If that is very different, then I'll know we're working with completely different texts. --] <small>(])</small> 22:16, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
:::The pages completely about Wodeyars up to 1799 AD is also 11 pages but the page numbers may not be the same. But he also discusses Mysore relations with regards to Chitradurga Nayakas, Yelahanka Nadaprabhus and the Marathas in about 10 other pages. In addition, information about sources of Mysore history are discussed in 2 pages early on in the book too.] (]) 01:46, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

== Changed my mind == | ||
] has been promoted to FA status. Thanks for your support in its FAC -- ]<small>]/]</small> 04:20, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
As I noted in my recent comment at ], I have changed my mind about helping you copyedit the article ]. I still do not know if you or Fowler&fowler et al are more correct in basic content issues, but the addition of four tags to the article immediately after the FARC indicates there should be a productive response. At a minimum, we should be able to improve the article's wording for current readers while content changes are being discussed. -- ] (]) 08:42, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

:I dont see any content changes happening unless the taggers realise that the only path is the path of discussion. Adding tags and stuff dont work and if anything, weakens their arguement.] (]) 14:33, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
::As you wish, but I will likely continue posting on sections which are not being actively edited. You or others may, in a small way, find the comments helpful when edits commence. I don't think the comments could be used against either your article content or its FA status. The list should be a net positive if copyedits can reduce areas of contention and help damp the fires over there.
There seems to be some objections about the grammar of the article. I suggest aproach the ].--] (]) 07:37, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
::Although multiple tagging after the FARC must be frustrating, you may have an uphill battle getting all of the current tags removed (though, even assuming I agreed with the opposition, one tag with a talk page pointer ought to be enough). POV tagging disputes can be difficult to resolve because they are not entirely factual in nature, worse when they involve the glacially slow processes of dispute resolution. I did remove the cleanup tag based on commonly judged quality thresholds for clearing articles from the cleanup list given its 2-year backlog and in comparison to most articles already tagged for cleanup. -- ] (]) 17:56, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
==Western Chalukya architecture==
If you are still interested in a copyeditor with experience bringing several articles to Featured and Good status, one editor I do know with that experience is ]. I have seen him or her take the final copyedits on a FAC right up to the point of a passed review, making changes on the level of sentence structure and content (beyond the corrective style editing that I do, which is rather a different sort of thing). I don't know if Finetooth is busy or would look it over, but it couldn't hurt to ask at ]. I do see you have a request at the League of Copyeditors, but that can sometimes take a while and not sure if they all have professional-level experience (not that professional experience is necessarily required here). -- ] (]) 15:26, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello, I did a modest rework of your first paragraph to make it read better (to me), while keeping your original sentence content to match the references. I didn't know what the references say and was therefore conservative in changing things around so as not to make the refs invalid. I'll try to get to the second through nth paragraph as time allows, but it's rather slow going given my unfamiliarity with the subject matter.
I'm not trying to sabotage the article. I think that the history section is pretty accurate and conforms with what diverse sources say and I'm ok with the title. I do feel that you and F&f need to figure out a way to make the article better, particularly by increasing the diversity of sources, but that's up to you guys. Now that I've read a bit and have access to the references, I'll tweak, add, and change a bit, but in the spirit of improvement - not destruction! --] <small>(])</small> 14:53, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Clearly there is still room for improvement, so I won't be putting any scheduled League copyeditors out of work here. Revert if you don't like the changes, my feelings will survive intact. -- ] (]) 12:41, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Hoi, | |||
Hi Dinesh, ] is getting better and better, and I'm glad you were not discouraged for long. The new graphics and explanations of key terms will certainly help to clarify things for people who know little about architecture and little about southern India. I'm sorry that I entered into the FAC debate; I did not feel at all comfortable in that hot kitchen. I am interested mainly in improving the encyclopedia, and I can see that that is your main interest as well. The Western Chalukya article is fascinating, which perhaps I did not say before. Best wishes with the article and with future articles. ] (]) 21:30, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

: Hi, Thanks for inviting me to take a look at ]. If I had spotted it before I may have got involved in the FAC. You have obviously done a great deal of work on this and had a bruising time in the FA review. It is a topic I know nothing about - which makes it interesting, but also because I am unfamiliar with many of the terms makes reading the article complex - which may be true for other reviewers. I was torn between the architecture and the religion, and although both are obviously linked, may put off those more specifically interested in the buildings and the techniques used than the different deities. Is there are overview article of the religious aspect which could be linked to from the article for those requiring further information? Personally I would move the table listing "famous temples" to a separate article(& watch out for terms such as "famous" as they may fail ]). I wish you luck with further development of the article and if I see it resubmitted for FA I will look at it again more closely.— ] ] 15:36, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Lurking at Giano's page as usual, I've made many adjustments to your text, but I was sorry to see that I hadn't completely fixed the snafus I caused in our edit conflict. You'll want to vet my edits, and I hope selectively revert to your text ,if I've created confusions or shifted the meaning. I haven't looked at the comments made over the article's FA status — often less than useful I find — so the following are quite independent suggestions:
*You have three stories to tell: by typology, by chronological stylistic development, by region. Keep them separate, under clear descriptive headings more specific than "Evolution", each with its own brief introductory summation. Give a brief disambiguating definition of ''every'' term as it first comes up, set into a footnote if it would intrude on the flow of text. None of this is familiar territory to the average fairly well-informed reader (myself!).
*You have a concise summary opening. Why not follow it with the historical and geographical setting, to orient the unfamiliar reader? Label the section with something obvious, like ''Historical and geographic setting".
*You have three aspects of typology: give them their separate subheadings and discuss them completely before moving on. Indian mathematics and geometry do need to be mentioned in relation to floorplans.
*You have a series of examples to offer, within the stylistic chronology. Ideally each one or each group should have its own paragraph, with a summary topic sentence.
*Your illustrations should be integrated with the text. The relevant illustration might be flagged (''illustration, right'' ''illustration, below left'') in the text, just at the moment where the reader should stop and look. Text and relevant illustration should appear in the browser's window at the same time.
*In overviews of broad architectural movements sometimes it's useful to parenthetically insert the clearest example — or rarely two — following statements (Siddhesvara Temple); this saves lots of repetitious "such as at the.." etc. (The teenagers who set themselves up to vet "FA"s may be unfamiliar with this convention, however, and decry it.) --] (]) 20:17, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

"''The vestibule receives even less light, making it necessary to have some form of artificial lighting day and night. This artificial source of light adds mystery to the image of the deity worshipped in the sanctum.''"
This phrase seems to be bothering some people, copuld you check the reff and see if we can perhaps change "mystery" to something like drama and impact or emphasis - perhaps even go the whole way and say "mystical quality" -what exactly does the reference say? If we can just put "mystery" in specch marks that will do so long as the reff uses that term. Hi Dineshkannambadi, the article ] belonging to Karnataka wikigroup, is edited by me and deals with the community history of the Namadharis/Halepaiks of Uttara Kannada. Kaada toreya jaadu: Autobiography of Kadidal Shamanna; Kagodu ondu nenapu, C.B.Chandrashekhar;The Nayakas of Ikkeri, K.D.Swaminathan;,Bimba-Pratibimba, Dr.L.R.Hegde;D.L.N Avara Ayda Lekhana, Kamala Hampana]. These form a necessary part of the glorious literary tradition of Kannada language and need to be seconded. hence i request you to kindly review the page.
offlate, i have been facing unilateral notices on the material without a proper knowledgable discussion on the topic. the member issuing notices seems to lack relevent knowledge in the subject and is defintely biased. but the warnings and unwarranted editing may lead to the page loosing out on the precious information derived from above mentioned sources. I appreciate your extensive articles and research work on Karnataka and the various dynasties that ruled Karnataka. Infact well known Devang king Bhoja fought against the invading islamic ruler Ghanavi who plundered Somnath temple and drove him upto Lahore. Could you please trace the roots and later evolution of this community. How did they evolve from being a royal community to a warrior community and then to a weaving community. See Image showing Kannada script evolution
I have added an image which shows the evolution of Kannada script. It is taken from an old book and it is already torn. Hope it may be helpful to everyone who is interested in the language. Also I created an article called "Karnataka history timeline". Check it out if possible.

Kannada literature in the Kingdom of Mysore
"Kannada literature in the Kingdom of Mysore is a body of literature composed from about 1600 CE, the date of the earliest known work" is a contardiction to the section "Literature prior to 16th century". I am not sure how a kingdom can have no literature in 2 centuries (1399 CE foundation to 1600). --Redtigerxyz 15:06, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
Architetural legacy of Karnataka

Kamat's book
Do you know if there are substantial differences between the 2001 edition (the one used in the Kingdom of Mysore article) and the original 1980 version of the Kamat book? The 1980 version has a mere 11 pages on Mysore between 1399 and 1799 and I'm having a hard time reconciling the text of the article with the material in the book (I don't have access to the 2001 version). Thanks! --Regent's Park (Boating Lake) 21:14, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
- Not sure how much difference there could be. I can check later on when I get home. Also, if you can tell me which part of the article and which sentences you are having trouble reconciling, we can get together and resolve it. There has been lots of paraphrasing and copy editing done, in addition to usage of other books (Subrahmanyam and Chopra etc). We can however go over this one at a time and see what has changed or how to re-phrase it.Regards, Dineshkannambadi (talk) 21:49, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
- I'll try. But, since the page numbers are totally different, it's hard. Let me know the length of the section on Wodeyars before 1799 in the 2001 edition. If that is very different, then I'll know we're working with completely different texts. --Regent's Park (Boating Lake) 22:16, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
- The pages completely about Wodeyars up to 1799 AD is also 11 pages but the page numbers may not be the same. But he also discusses Mysore relations with regards to Chitradurga Nayakas, Yelahanka Nadaprabhus and the Marathas in about 10 other pages. In addition, information about sources of Mysore history are discussed in 2 pages early on in the book too.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 01:46, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
- OK. It's probably more or less the same, except for the page numbers. I'll do a cross check tomorrow. Thanks! --Regent's Park (Boating Lake) 01:59, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Changed my mind
As I noted in my recent comment at Talk:Kingdom_of_Mysore, I have changed my mind about helping you copyedit the article Kingdom_of_Mysore. I still do not know if you or Fowler&fowler et al are more correct in basic content issues, but the addition of four tags to the article immediately after the FARC indicates there should be a productive response. At a minimum, we should be able to improve the article's wording for current readers while content changes are being discussed. -- Michael Devore (talk) 08:42, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- I dont see any content changes happening unless the taggers realise that the only path is the path of discussion. Adding tags and stuff dont work and if anything, weakens their arguement.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 14:33, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- As you wish, but I will likely continue posting on sections which are not being actively edited. You or others may, in a small way, find the comments helpful when edits commence. I don't think the comments could be used against either your article content or its FA status. The list should be a net positive if copyedits can reduce areas of contention and help damp the fires over there.
- Although multiple tagging after the FARC must be frustrating, you may have an uphill battle getting all of the current tags removed (though, even assuming I agreed with the opposition, one tag with a talk page pointer ought to be enough). -- Michael Devore (talk) 17:56, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Kingdom of Mysore
I'm not trying to sabotage the article. I think that the history section is pretty accurate and conforms with what diverse sources say and I'm ok with the title. I do feel that you and F&f need to figure out a way to make the article better, particularly by increasing the diversity of sources, but that's up to you guys. Now that I've read a bit and have access to the references, I'll tweak, add, and change a bit, but in the spirit of improvement - not destruction! --Regent's Park (Boating Lake) 14:53, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Saini
Hello. As the author of many India-related FAs, you clearly know what a well-written article looks like. Could you then, please, have a glance at Saini (and at the recent history) and, if you believe it's appropriate, put a {{cleanup}} tag there? It certainly seems deserving of one, despite the author's insistence to the contrary. - Biruitorul 23:49, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Dinesh,
I'm slowly coming to appreciate that the Old Kannada script is well attested, and good evidence that Kannada was already in written form at an early date. Request for peer review.
Hi Dineshkannambadi, the article Namadhari naik belonging to Karnataka wikigroup, is edited by me and deals with the community history of the Namadharis/Halepaiks of Uttara Kannada. In creating this article i have referred to most of Kannada literature sources, some of which are really rare [ex; Bombay gazetteer in Karnataka: Dharwad,Belgaum,Bijapur and Kannara districts, Venkataramgo Katti; Kaada toreya jaadu: Autobiography of Kadidal Shamanna; Kagodu ondu nenapu, C.B.Chandrashekhar;The Nayakas of Ikkeri, K.D.Swaminathan;,Bimba-Pratibimba, Dr.L.R.Hegde;D.L.N Avara Ayda Lekhana, Kamala Hampana].
So i request neutral observers like you to review it and opinionate. thankyou

Devanga
I appreciate your extensive articles and research work on Karnataka and the various dynasties that ruled Karnataka. I am interested in getting more information on the Kannada speaking Devanga community who are said to be prakrut brahmins from Ujjain and descendents of Rashtrakuta or Paramara dynasties but later fought as warriors for the Vijayanagara empire. Infact well known Devang king Bhoja fought against the invading islamic ruler Ghanavi who plundered Somnath temple and drove him upto Lahore. Could you please trace the roots and later evolution of this community. How did they evolve from being a royal community to a warrior community and then to a weaving community. Do you have any research done on Devangas. Are Devangas actually origins of Karnataka. Please reply to user mallyahm. Thanks

Hello, ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ. I see that you were actively involved in editing the Western Ghats article. 60% of Western Ghats lies in Karnataka and that's a fact right? Then why is it removed from the article? I guess somebody who's jealous that majority of the world heritage site lies in Karnataka has removed this sentence? And who on earth was it claiming that you were promoting Karnataka? You were doing a good job in adding some images of the Western Ghats in the state and expanding the article on a large scale. I would be glad to work with you on the article so that it becomes a GA. Hoysala literature is the large body of literature in the Kannada and Sanskrit languages produced by the Hoysala Empire (1025–1343) in what is now southern India. Kannada literature during this period consisted of writings relating to the socio-religious developments of the Jain and Veerashaiva faiths, and to a lesser extent that of the Vaishnava faith. The earliest well-known brahmin writers in Kannada were from the Hoysala court. While most of the courtly textual production was in Kannada, an important corpus of monastic Vaishnava literature relating to Dvaita (dualistic) philosophy was written by the renowned philosopher Madhvacharya in Sanskrit. Writing Kannada literature in native metres was first popularised by the court poets. These metres were the sangatya, compositions sung to the accompaniment of a musical instrument; shatpadi, six-line verses; ragale, lyrical compositions in blank verse; and tripadi, three-line verses. However, Jain writers continued to use the traditional champu, composed of prose and verse. Important literary contributions in Kannada were made not only by court poets but also by noblemen, commanders, ministers, ascetics and saints associated with monasteries. (more...)

Please come back, Dinesh!
Hi Dinesh, i am a big fan of your work. I sincerely hope that you would return and continue your work on Misplaced Pages at least for a short while. I am interested in the history of the Keladi Nayakas and the Chowta rulers of Mangalore. These articles are currently neglected. In the event that you would make a comeback, i would love to see you work on them. Best regards, Joyson Noel 10:13, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Main page appearance: Vijayanagara Empire
This is a note to let the main editors of Vijayanagara Empire know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on February 8, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/February 8, 2012. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Misplaced Pages talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:
The Vijayanagara Empire was an empire based in South Indian in the Deccan Plateau region. It was established in 1336 by Harihara I and his brother Bukka Raya I of the Yadava lineage. The empire rose to prominence as a culmination of attempts by the southern powers against Islamic invasions by the end of the 13th century. It lasted until 1646 although its power declined after a major military defeat in 1565 by the Deccan sultanates. The empire is named after its capital city of Vijayanagara, whose impressive ruins surround modern Hampi, now a World Heritage Site in modern Karnataka, India. The writings of medieval European travelers such as Domingo Paes, Fernão Nunes and Niccolò Da Conti and the literature in local vernaculars provide crucial information about its history. The empire's legacy includes many monuments spread over South India, the best known being the group at Hampi. Secular royal structures show the influence of the Northern Deccan Sultanate architecture. Efficient administration and vigorous overseas trade brought new technologies like water management systems for irrigation. The empire's patronage enabled fine arts and literature to reach new heights in the languages of Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Sanskrit, while Carnatic music evolved into its current form. The Vijayanagara Empire created an epoch in South Indian history that transcended regionalism by promoting Hinduism as a unifying factor. (more...)

This is a note to let the main editors of Western Ganga Dynasty know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on August 9, 2012. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:
The Western Ganga Dynasty was an important ruling dynasty of ancient Karnataka in India which lasted from about 350 to 1000 CE. They are known as Western Gangas to distinguish them from the Eastern Gangas who in later centuries ruled over modern Odisha. Though territorially a small kingdom, the Western Ganga contribution to polity, culture and literature of the modern south Karnataka region is considered important. The Western Ganga kings showed benevolent tolerance to all faiths but are most famous for their patronage towards Jainism resulting in the construction of monuments in places such as Shravanabelagola and Kambadahalli. The kings of this dynasty encouraged the fine arts due to which literature in Kannada and Sanskrit flourished. Chavundaraya's writing, Chavundaraya Purana of 978 CE, is an important work in Kannada prose. Many classics were written on various subjects ranging from religion to elephant management. (more...)

Vijayanagara literature in Kannada at TFA
Based on your contribution history, I'm afraid you may have retired from editing at this point, but at a recent WP:TFA/R discusion, Cenarium suggested that Vijayanagara literature in Kannada would make an excellent "Today's Featured Article", and I agree. Before preparing a blurb and nominating it myself, I wanted to see if you (or possibly someone else more familiar with the article's content - I admit I'm no scholar of Indian literature!) might be interested in preparing a nomination. Thanks! 0x0077BE 12:21, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
