==Athos== | |||
== Hi there! == | |||
:''As for Athos, Greeks typically (at least in modern Greek) simply refer to mountains using the name, as typically only well-known mountains are referred to by name. Hello. In view of your ability to clarify the situation concerning the name ''Athos'', maybe you'd know the answer to this one too: During the recent TV coverage of the Olympics in Athens and on some web sites I find Greece referred to sometimes as ''Ellas'' and other times as ''Ellada''. I ''guessing'' that the former is nominative and the latter is accusative. Is that it? One page on the web that lists the participating countries in Greek gives ''Ellada''. There are 2 issues, exit polling is historically reliable, but in any given situation like this one data may be wrong. == Barnstar ==
You're right. Lilypond as a markup language leaves a great deal to be desired. It is difficult to understand even for people with both a musical and a software background, and as you point out has a great deal of typographical cruft that has nothing to do with the musical idea being presented.
{| style="border: 1px solid gray; background-color: #fdffe7;"
However, it is the best of the free solutions that we have today, and the situation is unlikely to change. There is a "music XML" project that is, at best, early stage, and that is encumbered by copyright. There are the widely used proprietary formats. And there are some "way out there" standards being proposed, that appear to me unlikely to come to fruition.

== Uprising or massacre? ==
There are several barriers to a standardized music markup, chief among them being that proper music notation really can't be reduced to a simple grammar. There are so many instrument-specific, period-specific, and genre-specific things to portray that it's hard. I play organ, and organ notation uses heel and toe markings that, as far as I know, are not used for any other instrument (except maybe pedal piano). Accordion notation is another similar can of worms. This leaves aside more common instruments, like piano and strings and voice, that each have their own unique (albeit well understood) notational conventions.
] ] (]) 15:30, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
Anyway, you probably already know most or all this, but the point is that with all the complexity, and the market fragmentation, and the small size of the classical music community, and the fact that music publishing is not particularly profitable, it is unlikely that any future standards effort will be more successful than the previous ones.
== ] == | |||
So we are left with Lilypond, which with all its shortcomings for what we want to do, is the best available and likely to remain so for quite some time.

Hi. The ] has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland ]. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like ]. For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like ], sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. == A new user right for New Page Patrollers ==
Hi {{BASEPAGENAME}}. | |||
A new user group, ], has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at ]. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available ] but very often a friendly custom message works best.
If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at ]. <small>''(Sent to all admins)''</small>.] (]) 13:46, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Good evening Delirium, I've come here because of an article that has been suggested for deletion in the German Misplaced Pages: ]. Over there, some argue that the term ''rivier'' would not actually be a specific term for ''dry river beds in Namibia'' but that it would signify nothing more than ''river'' (as it does in Afrikaans, see ]). Now, we have found that the Namibian German which was used in colonial times actually did borrow the term ''rivier'' from Afrikaans and did narrow its meaning from ''river'' to ''dry river (bed)''. But the question remains if this actually established a general regional term or not. I am writing all this because a long time ago :), you wrote the magic sentence . Do you remember the source of your information back then? The word ''rivier'' does pop up in English texts, but in my impression only occasionally. Do you have any more information on that? That would be tremendous. Thanks and best regards, --] (]) 20:02, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
:Hi Andropov! Surprisingly enough I was able to remember why I wrote that disambiguation page. I had previously written ], which used the term, so I wanted somewhere for the link to go. Alas, I don't think I had an especially solid source. I was in fact translating a German Misplaced Pages article originally: the of ] was largely a translation of what used to be at ], though that edit history has since ended up at ] due to a page move. In , the German Misplaced Pages described it as a ''rivier'' and linked to ], the article now in question for deletion, which , like now, claimed it was a Namibia-specific term. I naturally looked it up on the English Misplaced Pages to see if it was also used in English. There was at the time no English article at ], but the article ] did have this sentence: ''In southwestern Africa, the term rivier is used.'' I think between that sentence, and doing a little poking around on Google Books, I convinced myself that people did call the Tsauchab a rivier in English and that it meant something close enough to ] to be worth having a disambiguation page at ] linking to ]. But I don't remember specifically which books I would've run across on Google Books. In any case, since then, all three articles in question (en:wadi, en:Tsauchab, and de:Tsauchab) have been edited to remove the term, so the disambiguation makes less sense now (unless you manage to turn up a better source!). --] (]) 20:38, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
== One Question == | |||
:: Wow, thank you so much for this very precise recollection! Unfortunately, I have not found much more in English texts. But I will have another, more thorough look around and will report any incidents back to you :) Kind regards and thanks again, --] (]) 22:54, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
In most legal situations, policemen whose conduct is undergoing criminal investigation tend to be temporarily suspended from duty.
::: Not that I have found much more, but you might be interested in the thorough (yet not exhaustive) list another user prepared of the various terms used worldwide for ''dry rivers''/''intermittent rivers'' at ] (see also as the main source). == Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular) ==
ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are ] to "have strong passwords and ]." We have ] our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, ] remains an ''optional'' means of adding extra security to your account. We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
so why is ] voting on the proposed decision? ] 19:09, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin '''will still be able to access the IP'''. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on ] to help.

Hi, I noticed you redirected Sexual Compulsion to Hypersexuality. These are not the same things. It's too early for me to think about the difference, but it's something like: sexual compulsion or sexual addiction can be related to many, many things like drug use or, an unhappy childhood, etc., while hypersexuality is associated with manic disorder. However, sexual compulsion is often a ''symptom'' of hypersexuality, although is not necessarily an ''indicator'' of hypersexuality, as the physiological aspects of sexual desire are not always present in sexual compulsion.

Hi, I choose you mostly at random as an administrator to help deal with a problem. The user, ], has been making some POV edits to the article on ]. He also re-writes or erases things right after I add them to the page. We have been having discussions but he seems quite immature and doesn't compromise. He also makes many small edits in a row, leaving the history page full of a long list. I, along with other users, have told him to use the "show preview" button in order to combine his edits into one update, but he insists that he can't. His ] is not so good either and he constantly adds incoherent sentences to the article. He also recently deleted the external links I added (which have been in the article for a long period) and replaced them with cheap websites that are not of good quality, and I've told him that Misplaced Pages is not supposed to be a web-directory. Anyway, I could keep going on, but if you take a look at the article and look at different versions in it's history, you'll see what I'm talking about. I'd like you to block him from editing just this article if possible. Or at least give him a warning and remind him how to edit correctly, and follow the rules. I realize Italo Disco is an obscure genre, so maybe another administrator is more suited to deal with this issue. But let me know what can be done. Thank you. - ] 05:33, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

On the Mall
You previously (in 2007) removed a brief article on Edwin Franko Goldman's "On the Mall" march. Nonetheless, this march is famous with marching bands, and it is the most well known composition by Goldman. Will you approve another attempt to create an article on that march? Rammer (talk) 03:39, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
- Hi! Sure, I have no objection at all; in fact an article on the subject would be welcomed. The only reason the previous version was deleted was because it had two sentences with no context at all, so wasn't intelligible even as a stub. --Delirium (talk) 10:17, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
- All right. I'll see about the need. My personal sense on article length is that even a short article should have at least THREE sentences, meaning a beginning, a middle, and an end. Don't get on an airplane unless it has a nose, a fuselage, and a tail. Rammer (talk) 21:29, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Carl Bock
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Carl Bock requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Mentoz86 (talk) 13:57, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. WikiProject Wildfire
Hello! I have recently started a new WikiProject and am trying to recruit new members. The project, WikiProject Wildfire, focuses on articles that relate to wildfires. There is a lot of work that needs to be done. From updating templates, to classifying and improving articles. Any level of commitment is welcome! If you care to just add some input on the founding of the new project, awesome. If you would like to take an active role in editing articles, that is awesome as well! Knowledge of wildfires is NOT a prerequisite for joining the project. In fact, it would be great to have some members of the project who are NOT fire-buffs. That way we make sure that articles aren't just written by and for people in the fire community. If this is something you have any interest in, I would love to have you join the project! Please feel free to join the discussion or leave me a message on my talk page. (Note that you are receiving this message from me because I saw you made multiple edits on a wildfire related page, specifically Old Fire. Not just spamming you at random.) Hope you have a great day! Extended confirmed protection
Hello, Delirium. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.
Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.
In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:
- Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.

Proposed deletion of H.E.R.R.
The article H.E.R.R. has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Notability: does not meet WP:NBAND. Only one member is notable (and not as a musician), failing criterion #5. No sources listed and no RS could be found.
While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. K.e.coffman (talk) 00:58, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite
Hi. The Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Misplaced Pages:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Misplaced Pages:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 05:43, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins
Hello,
Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers
Hi Delirium.
A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM.
User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.
If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:46, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Rivier
Good evening Delirium, I've come here because of an article that has been suggested for deletion in the German Misplaced Pages: de:Rivier. Over there, some argue that the term rivier would not actually be a specific term for dry river beds in Namibia but that it would signify nothing more than river (as it does in Afrikaans, see af:Rivier). Now, we have found that the Namibian German which was used in colonial times actually did borrow the term rivier from Afrikaans and did narrow its meaning from river to dry river (bed). But the question remains if this actually established a general regional term or not. I am writing all this because a long time ago :), you wrote the magic sentence Rivier can mean Wadi, dry riverbed, called rivier in southwest Africa. Do you remember the source of your information back then? The word rivier does pop up in English texts, but in my impression only occasionally. Do you have any more information on that? That would be tremendous. Thanks and best regards, --Andropov (talk) 20:02, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Andropov! Surprisingly enough I was able to remember why I wrote that disambiguation page. I had previously written Tsauchab, which used the term, so I wanted somewhere for the link to go. Alas, I don't think I had an especially solid source. I was in fact translating a German Misplaced Pages article originally: the initial version of Tsauchab was largely a translation of what used to be at de:Tsauchab, though that edit history has since ended up at de:Sesriem-Canyon due to a page move. In that version, the German Misplaced Pages described it as a rivier and linked to de:rivier, the article now in question for deletion, which then, like now, claimed it was a Namibia-specific term. I naturally looked it up on the English Misplaced Pages to see if it was also used in English. There was at the time no English article at rivier, but the article wadi did at the time have this sentence: In southwestern Africa, the term rivier is used. I think between that sentence, and doing a little poking around on Google Books, I convinced myself that people did call the Tsauchab a rivier in English and that it meant something close enough to wadi to be worth having a disambiguation page at rivier linking to wadi. --Delirium (talk) 20:38, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
- Wow, thank you so much for this very precise recollection! Unfortunately, I have not found much more in English texts. But I will have another, more thorough look around and will report any incidents back to you :) Kind regards and thanks again, --Andropov (talk) 22:54, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
- Not that I have found much more, but you might be interested in the thorough (yet not exhaustive) list another user prepared of the various terms used worldwide for dry rivers/intermittent rivers at de:Benutzer Diskussion:W!B:#Namen für Trockenflüsse (see also this PDF (p. 206) as the main source). The article de:Rivier has been saved from deletion today, but as of yet it remains to be seen if it can be expanded again. Best regards, --Andropov (talk) 22:55, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

Delirium, ranting, and other delusions
Please note my ranting at Talk:Metropole#Globalize. Your comment combined with the actual situation revealed from the page history hit a sore nerve. There is a second-level of vandalism continuing here at Misplaced Pages. That vandalism is the cumulative effects of ill-disciplined, ignorant, uncaring, artless fumblers who yet still believe they know everything. My rant has everything to do with the damage that such 'editors' do to WP. I've been freaking about this for awhile (see User:Shenme). The wine will not be drinkable with catarrhal diarrheal elephants stomping the grapes here. (Is there a group here similar to the old alt.sysadmin.recovery ?) Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)
ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Proposed deletion of Memento Materia
The article Memento Materia has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No significant secondary coverage to be found when I check, article is in the same state as in 2005 and has been marked for notability since 2015.
While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. AlexandraAVX (talk) 21:01, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research
Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
