The town was incorporated on August 12, 1897.
It is best known as the home of the 43rd president of the United States, George W. Bush. He currently resides part-time at the Prairie Chapel Ranch, which is located just outside Crawford, Texas.

Crawford was the site of many anti-Iraq War demonstrations including Camp Casey, when Cindy Sheehan purchased five acres (2 ha) just outside Crawford and intended to stay until she was granted a face-to-face meeting with the President, but left soon after. Crawford is the subject of a 2008 documentary film, also called Crawford, about the change brought to the town by Bush's arrival.
