Crisco, I just noticed that you reviewed the ] article, and flunked it for a variety of reasons, one of which was the Notable cases section. The creator has an article on ] currently in {{queue|4}} and due to hit the main page in four hours, and it has a "Notable offenders" section—a list rather than a table, and each offender is wikilinked to an article. Hey, now. I found a picture of an American Cocker Spaniel, a dog that we need pictures of, in the co,mmons Category:Low quality dog pictures, and I figured we could do something with it if we are cropping it, not that bad.

Now the file is deleted and Phil got a template of a common admin, saying she violated copyright? Why? It looked like the persons own dog, or? She have just been accused of violating copyright by an admin over on ! when she only cropped it.
I wan't that dog back, if possible.

Hi there. This is a message for CasLiber, HamiltonStone, SturmVogel and Crisco. Thanks for your help and feeback re: the Singora article. It achieved FA status on Saturday.

I got a message today saying the article will now appear on Misplaced Pages's home page on June 4. This surprised me. I read somewhere that it usually takes several months for featured articles to make it to the home page.

I've cleaned things up a bit. CasLiber and Crisco noted that the section about Persians in 17th century Siam looked out of place. I've deleted this paragraph.

I've also re-jigged the lead and added:

*1. Alternative names / spellings to the Early History section.
*2. An explanatory note re: the foundation of the city in 1605.
*3. An explanatory note re: Sultan Sulaiman's declaration of independence in 1642.
*4. A second paragraph to the The forts at Khao Daeng section.

If you have time to briefly glance through it again, please do. I still feel the article can be improved prior to June 4.

Thanks again for your help. I've enjoyed doing this. I finished Oxford University almost exactly 30 years ago, so this has been an opportunity to cast aside some of the rust and dust that's built up over the years. Perhaps I'm not as good as I was, but I think I'm still just about okay!

I'll login from time to time. If you'd like a review, do please feel free to let me know.

I will say this, though: Although "oeuvre" has been adopted into English, it is still obviously a French word, and more important, it still ''looks'' like a foreign word. I'm pretty sure at least half of the world's readers of English—especially those whose only language is English—wouldn't know what it means. When they encountered it, they'd either have to guess what it means from the context, or consult a dictionary, or just skip past it. In any case, it would have disrupted their reading, something we don't want to do unnecessarily.
*Hafs, how did you manage that? Did you go to ] and follow the instructions? — ] (]) 13:31, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

::What was I doing wrong?
] (]) 14:08, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

I was prepared to substitute your first correction, "body of work" (which you mentioned in the explanation of your edit reinstating "oeuvre"), for "oeuvre", because more readers of English would understand what "body of work" means than would as easily understand what "oeuvre" means, and imparting information is our most important responsibility. But brevity shines like gold (and obviously is not a virtue I have), so I congratulate and thank you for your excellent resolution. ] (]) 03:00, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
<nowiki>
*Thanks, 38. I do try and figure out a middle-point. You had a good point about "extant", both at Wu's article and at ''Valiant'', and although I personally feel that oeuvre is a fairly well understood loan word (similar to premiere and coup d'état) I appreciate that my own background probably informs that perspective. I agree that the new wording is much better; it keeps it brief while still referring to the entirety of her body of work. — ] (]) 11:47, 15 January 2025 (UTC)

Nice to see a familiar road here - used to pass by ] a lot while going to ] or ]. == "and other Shinto traditions?" ==

I don't have a source to back it up, but it was explained to me that cremation is a Buddhist thing, and the traditional Shinto thing is to roll the body up in a barrel-like thing for burial—this is rare today, though. Apparently cremation did not become common until the 20th century, although if you told that to the average Japanese they'd be surprised. Today, people tend to follow Buddhist rites for death-related things (funerals, family tombstone visits, etc) and Shinto for life-related things (celebrating a birth, shrine visits at New Year's)—even though most Japanese are not particularly religious (if at all). It's all very confusing, and your average Japanese is not very helpful in explaining it. ] ⚞]⚟ 09:07, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
*Hence why the text is hidden. :D The two paragraphs were just to have a general overview which we can source. We don't need to go too in-detail, but this is all important for the average reader. I had never heard of kegare before, that's for sure. — ] (]) 09:09, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
**Y'learn something new all the time—I'd thought ''kegare'' was just a less-common synonym for ''yogore'' or ''kitanai'' (two words for "dirty" written with the same Chinese character as ''kegare''). The skipping of the New Year's postcords was always explained to me as "medetaku nai kara" (roughly "because there's nothing to feel happy about (celebrate?)"—the dictionary gives "because it's inauspicious", but it's not anything as pompous-sounding a thing to say as that). My experience is that few Japanese have much depth of knowledge of their own traditions, even everyday ones. ] ⚞]⚟ 10:50, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Crisco, I'm going to be with family starting tomorrow for the long weekend, and access will likely be spotty (if I have free time at all). I'm hoping you can help me with a couple of outstanding issues that I don't think I'm going to have time to finish up on. Many thanks.

The first is ]. As it has sources in Indonesian, particularly one Soman was pointing me to that I was hoping to hand it off to you, since Google translate is quite rough and missing the detail I would need. The "cadre" issue has been solved by Soman changing the wording—I'd never run into the word applying to a single person, and found its use confusing—but there's an "if...then" structure to the final sentence that I'm not sure is warranted. I imagine you'll be able to tell. At any rate, I hope you don't mind my leaving the final disposition of this to you.

The other one was a call from Drmies on ] with a query about the newest ALT hook, which I'm hoping you can take for me.

There have been a couple of nominations I'd been meaning to commend to your attention, since they've been sitting there for a while. One is an April Fools candidate, ]. story · music · places

Thank you for music on the Main page to start a new year, - may it be happy for you! I wanted a Bach cantata there, with trumpet fanfares that first sounded OTD in 1725, but it landed OTD, as DYK had no room for it. Looking forward to doing things together, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:40, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

Happy new year!

For your (very brief) perusal: Liang Lingxian. The Liang family is always a great subject to study... Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 16:41, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

  • That's impressive, TheLonelyPather. I've been on a reprieve for a bit, but I was working on a draft about Li Minghui (the daughter of Li Jinhui). It's missing almost seventy years of her life, so I'm hoping that the resource exchange can get me a copy of her biography in the Shanghai Dictionary... oddly enough, the Chinese-language sources are almost entirely Sohu and other user-generated content. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 17:43, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
@Crisco 1492 One should not expect great standards for Chinese-language sources. Chinese Misplaced Pages-equivalents are more or less of a wild west. Also be aware that the Shanghai Dictionary, being compiled by official committees, would only present people's biographies in politically suitable ways. I wish you luck! Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 01:42, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
Yep, I expected as much. Unfortunately, English-language sources seem to have stopped looking into her past 1931, and Baidu claims that she was acting until 1938. State-sponsored sources are better than none at all, especially given that Li doesn't appear to have involved herself in politics all that much. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 02:17, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

Two files

  1. File:Cher am i blue.jpg: You seem to have missed to undelete the first revision of this file before transferring it. Looking at the history, it says that a bot has reduced the file, then a bot reduced the file a bit more and finally you reverted to the first bot reduced version, but the original full-size image is missing.
  2. File:Bride of the Desert.jpg: You removed Category:Copy to Wikimedia Commons with hidden file revisions, claiming that there's no evidence that the book was published in 1929. However, if you click on the URL in the source field, it says HOEL, Arthur. Bride of the Desert. New York: Jacobsen Publishing Co, (1929). Therefore, I suspect that it was published in 1929. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:13, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
  • Hi Stefan2. For the Cher image, the earliest revision was fully deleted by Skier Dude on August 18, 2011. Consequently, it did not show up as a previous version in the history. I can upload it from history though.
For the Bride image, that information should ideally have been on the page prior to submission for administerial review. Although the film was 1929, it is not automatically guaranteed that the novelization was released at the same time. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 22:09, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
I think that full deletion was the only way to delete old non-free revisions in the past and so all files reduced before some date had their old revisions removed by that method, whereas after that it changed so that they would usually be removed using the new method. Usually, it's useful to have all old revisions on Commons no matter which method the administrator used for revision deletion. --Stefan2 (talk) 22:27, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

Wu Suxin

Thanks for coming up with a wording in Wu Suxin that we can agree on. When I saw that you'd reverted my good-faith (though snarkily explained) edit I was prepared to defend it, but you came up with something much better. I'm pleasantly surprised and sincerely grateful.

I will say this, though: Although "oeuvre" has been adopted into English, it is still obviously a French word, and more important, it still looks like a foreign word.

38.49.72.163 (talk) 03:00, 15 January 2025 (UTC)

  • Thanks, 38. I do try and figure out a middle-point. You had a good point about "extant", both at Wu's article and at Valiant, and although I personally feel that oeuvre is a fairly well understood loan word (similar to premiere and coup d'état) I appreciate that my own background probably informs that perspective. I agree that the new wording is much better; it keeps it brief while still referring to the entirety of her body of work. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 11:47, 15 January 2025 (UTC)

Fuzhou Road

Nice to see a familiar road here - used to pass by Fuzhou Road a lot while going to The Bund or People's Square. I do have a question though: Given that Google Maps doesn't exactly have the most updated information regarding places in China, wouldn't it be more accurate to use alternative & perhaps more updated map sources like Baidu Maps, Amap or OSM for the "Description" section? (Especially the "As of 2025" part) S5A-0043🚎 08:32, 19 January 2025 (UTC)

  • To be completely honest, I don't know. This is my first road article, and I was mainly interested due to its historic role in the publication industry. I did pull up OSM, and the one-way stipulation is there as well - though it doesn't show the little hook at the end, and neither do our maps of Shanghai on Commons. I'll nix that part. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 12:44, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
