I've semi-protected this cotton pickin' talk page for a year. Talk page protection
I've semi-protected this cotton pickin' talk page for a year. I really don't like protecting user talk pages, especially for such a long time, because obviously it risks collateral damage on innocent editors, but under present circumstances it seems like the least bad option. You may like to consider doing what I have done when I've been in the same situation as you are now. I have created an alternative user talk page, called User talk:JBW/Open, and when my main talk page is protected because of vandalism, I post a message on my main talk page with a link to the other one, inviting editors who can't edit the main page to post on the other one. Obviously the vandals and trolls could just post on the alternative talk page, but in practice for some reason they never do. I don't know why, but maybe there's no fun in trolling if you think it won't be publicly visible. Anyway, whatever the reason, I have used that method several times over the years, and I have found that it really does work, so I would encourage you to consider doing the same. - @JBW: My talk page on Wikiquote is semi-protected indefinitely against IP vandals, as well, and no one seems to be complaining. As to an alternative talk page, considering this vandal's level of trolling, I will just play it safe and not create an alternative until the troll is finally brought to justice (and denied unsupervised Internet privileges).
