Actually, the "United Kingdom" part goes back to 1707. What it is a United Kingdom ''of'' changes a couple of times. "Great Britain" is the name of the island which includes England, Scotland, and Wales. There has never been any political issue between Britain and Brittany because of the name. Nor for that matter between the independent Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Belgium, which has a province named Luxembourg. I'd be interested to know who makes the strange claim about EU membership and Britain/Brittany. They don't sound very reliable.... --] 21:57, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Yes, "United Kingdom" is used as a short form all over the place, just as "France" (as opposed to "Republic of France") and "Rhode Island" (as opposed to "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations") are the normal short forms, but the full form is clearly and definitively the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", both domestically and in international organizations. Tell me, would you be happier if the Republic of Macedonia renamed itself as the United Republic of Great Macedonia and Southern Kosovo? No? I didn't think so.... --] 22:09, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

I read the whole discussion about the FYROM name (Greece-discussion) and I decided to make a few remarks. "FYROM" is no compromise; it is just a temporary (no-)solution, which no party likes: Greece because it loses grounds and more countries recognise FYROM as "Macedonia" and FYROM because it desperately want a final settlement. Hence, the term "FYROM" is no compromise. As fas ar the accession of UK is concerned, I don't think that there was ever a problem with the name. France vetoed UK's accesion for political reasons and because of De Gaulle. Now, if Greece does not veto FYROM's application or if Greece does not impose certain concrete terms, FYROM can become EU's member as "Macedonia"!

Hello, just wanted to tell you that the epithet "white-armed", which you placed on the Individuals list as belonging to Hera and Nausicaa, is already on the General list, since it belongs to several different people. I'm going to remove the epithet from the Individuals list, unless you think that it is clearer to tell which women the epithet applies to. Personally I value conciseness more in this case, since the list would become incredibly long if common epithets were listed under multiple people. — ]·] 16:19, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

The greeks never used their word for ocean, 'okeanos' to designate the Mediterranean, but only the words pontos, pelagos and thalassa. For the ancient greeks ocean meant exclusively 'the river that surrounds the world' outside the mediterranean basin and the known world. The ocean 'comes back on itself' (XVII,399 and 20,65) implying that it is subject to tides. There can be no doubt, because the word used, ''apsorro-os'' means 'flowing back'or 'ebbing', the movement after high tide. This word, which is also used for someone going back to Ilium (VII,413) as well as other indications led the Greek geographer Strabo to note that 'Homer was not ignorant about the ebb and flow of Okeanos' and he concluded that several events described by the poet must therefore have taken place in the Atlantic Ocean.

Hi, and welcome to the WikiProject Greece! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Misplaced Pages's coverage of topics related to Greece.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Interested in working on a more complete article? The peer review department of the project would welcome your help!
  • Interested in a particular area of Greek history, geography, culture etc. ? There are already two task forces, and you could initiate the creation of more focusing on specific topics or periods.
  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every Greece related article in Misplaced Pages.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to any experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around!

Flood myth

When you are in a content dispute you should not be reverting labelling something as vandalism. Pico explained why he removed the section, it wasn't vandalism. Dougweller (talk) 07:16, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your feedback. User:PiCo deleted a complete section in Flood myth compiled by many editors over the last three years or so, which incorporated some eighteen internal links, plus three footnotes, claiming that "there's not a single reliable source cited". If this not vandalism, what is? --Odysses () 21:13, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
Replied on my talk page. Dougweller (talk) 16:16, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Significance of Plato quotation

I have a question about something you added to List of Greek phrases some five years ago, specifically that Ἀεί ὁ θεός ὁ μέγας γεωμετρεί is a mnemonic for pi. The article currently attributes it to Plato, citing Plutarch's Symposiacs, but that source does not say that it is a mnemonic for pi (here). It seems odd to me that people who did not use decimal notation would have a mnemonic for a decimal notation and it has come up regarding another article. Could you provide a source for this fact? RJC Contribs 16:47, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. My reply here. --Odysses () 20:09, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. The original of course does not have all the words or in that order, instead τὸν θεὸν ἀεὶ γεωμετρεῖν or γεωμετρεῖν τὸν θεὸν. I wonder if there is a way to note this on the article without going off on a long tangent. I ask because someone on Talk:Plato has pushed the idea that this phrase is Plato's and that it reveals something about Plato's gematria; I found some pages to the similar effect on the Internet. Do you have any ideas? RJC Contribs 22:45, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. My reply here. --Odysses () 23:22, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Homeric epithets shared by more than one person

Hello, just wanted to tell you that the epithet "white-armed", which you placed on the Individuals list as belonging to Hera and Nausicaa, is already on the General list, since it belongs to several different people. I'm going to remove the epithet from the Individuals list, unless you think that it is clearer to tell which women the epithet applies to. Personally I value conciseness more in this case, since the list would become incredibly long if common epithets were listed under multiple people. — Eru·tuon 16:19, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Reversion on Trojan Horse

You note in your edit summary "per talk", but the talk page consensus seems firmly against inclusion. Did you perhaps misread this, as it is spread over two sections? --Old Moonraker (talk) 07:56, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Italics in Greek characters

Hello. I just wanted to inform you about Misplaced Pages's stylistic conventions against the use of italics in Greek characters. Italics are not necessary in the case of non-Latin characters; the difference with "normal Latin text" is obvious.

Please check also this old discussion on the matter: Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style_(text_formatting)/Archive_1#Italics_in_Cyrillic_and_Greek_characters. Thanks. --Omnipaedista (talk) 03:16, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Confusion over Plutarch bust image

Could you chime in at Talk:Plutarch if you get a chance? There is speculation about what kind of information/source backs up the identification of the image you contributed. Cheers, Wareh (talk) 18:24, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Peloponnese vs West Greece

Hi Odysses, thank you for adding the Numismatic museum in the list. About Achaea, although geographically it is part of Pelopnnese, its article states clearly that it is part of the "region" of West Greece, which is why I had placed it there. I have done all the classification of the list based on these administrative "regions", so I'm not sure if this move is in line with the rest. Hoverfish Talk 03:31, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Disambiguation link notification for February 6

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Atlas (mythology), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Hyades. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Refugees of Syrian Civil War

Hi, The page Refugees of the Syrian Civil War concerns only Syrian refugees, not total refugees. In the country table, you have replaced 5,129 Syrian asylum applications to Greece, with "30,000+" and another reference. The reference you provided is for total refugee applications. Could you please undo and revert to previously provided number of Syrian refugee applications. thanks so much Robert Brukner (talk) 19:30, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

Ignore the previous comment. I have used both references, update the arrivals to Feb 2016, and recalculated the estimated applicants (its over 33,500+ now) Robert Brukner (talk) 19:41, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

Thanks. I used data from UNHCR for my edit. According to them there is a total of 856,723 arrivals by sea in 2015 out of which Syrians represent 44% = 376,958 arrivals. Only 8% of arrivals applied for asylum, and assuming that Syrians applied at the same proportion 8%, we get 376,958 x 0.08 = 30,156 Syrian applicants approximately.--Odysses () 23:04, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

Syrian Refugees and Greece

Hi, Do you have a source for the actual numbers of refugees now currently in Greece? I've seen numbers for arrivals and estimates of asylum applications. But I've never seen estimates for departures. How many Syrian refugees are actually inside the country at any one moment? Robert Brukner (talk) 20:36, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

Protesilaus and Odysseus in Troy

Hi,

On 12 March 2006, you edited the Odysseus page (https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Odysseus&diff=43416188&oldid=43412997) to include a story about Odysseus jumping on his shield when he first arrived at Troy: "When the Achaean ships reached the shores of Troy, none would jump ashore, since there was an oracle that the first Achaean to jump on Trojan soil would die. Odysseus tossed his shield on the shore and jumped on his shield. He was followed by Protesilaus who jumped on Trojan soil and he was the first to die."

I've been searching for a source for this story for hours, and can't find one. Could you please let me know where this story comes from?

C —Preceding unsigned comment added by Christudor (talkcontribs)

Hi Christudor, I don't have a primary source for this event either. I've read it in some modern authors regarding Greek Mythology. One example is Greek Mythology by Katerina Servi, archaeologist, ISBN 960-213-372-4. --Odysses () 12:09, 8 June 2016 (UTC)
