On the evening of November 11, 2024, a 62-year-old man deliberately rammed a vehicle into crowds at Zhuhai Sports Center in Zhuhai, Guangdong, China, leading to significant casualties. As of the early hours of November 13, the incident has resulted in 35 deaths and 43 injuries.

Attack

At approximately 19:48 on 11 November 2024, an SUV hit citizens exercising at the Zhuhai Sports Center running track. There was heightened security in Zhuhai, which was hosting a major civil and military airshow. An eyewitness stated that the car drove in a loop on a running track, knocking over many people.

A 62-year-old man with the surname Fan was arrested on the scene after attempting to flee the site of the attack. Early reports claim that Fan had been recently divorced and was dissatisfied with how property had been divided afterwards. Police state that Fan entered into a coma after he cut himself in the neck with a knife.

Reactions

At first, news of the incident was censored on Chinese social media platforms. Teacher Li Is Not Your Teacher posted a video on Twitter of several people lying on the ground and a woman yelling in pain, while a firefighter rendered aid to a victim.

General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping called for rescue efforts and urged local officials to maintain social stability.
