American ragtime composer (1889-1933)

Samuel Joseph Stokes (September 8, 1889 - October 28, 1933) was an American ragtime composer.

Early life

Samuel Joseph Stokes was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Career

Stokes is known for composing four ragtime pieces for solo piano that were published by the L. Grunewald Co. between 1908 and 1910. The pieces are Dynamite Rag (1908), The North Pole (1909), Salome Rag (1909), and Thunderbolt Rag (1910).

Personal life

Stokes married Harriet Williams in New Orleans on August 3, 1914.
