==Selection Process==
| image1 = Piers Morgan - 2011 cropped.jpg
The season 5 selection process appears to carry over that of the past two seasons, but the Las Vegas Round was changed to that of the second and third seasons, which gave the performers a second chance to showcase their act. Instead of an audition consisting of performers who submitted their acts on ], as has been done in previous seasons, the year contained a quarterfinal made up of twelve acts who submitted their auditions on ] (eleven selected by the judges and one selected by online voters). Because of the inclusion of an additional quarterfinal, only four acts were selected to move on each week, instead of five. Additionally, there was also a separate Wild Card show (the first since season 1), consisting of acts brought back by the judges to perform after being originally eliminated in either Las Vegas Week or previous quarterfinals. The semifinal consisted of 24 acts this season. Ten of the 24 passed through to the Top 10 round, from which six were eliminated, leaving four to compete in the finals.

==Las Vegas Week==

From 70,000 acts in the nationwide auditions, the judges advanced the top 108 acts to ] to compete head to head for a spot in the Top 48. On their way to Las Vegas, the judges reviewed the audition tapes and divided the contestants into 3 groups. Not all groups that were shown to have passed the preliminary auditions were shown in the Las Vegas Week episodes.

Those in Group A were referred to as "the judges' favorites," and performed on Day 1 of Las Vegas (Episode 511) (January 19, 2011).
The fifth season of American ] competition series '']'' was broadcast on ] from June 1 to September 15, 2010. For the season, production staff introduced two new quarter-finals: one for Wildcards selected from the participants eliminated during auditions or their respective quarter-final, and one for acts that auditioned via ], following changes in the online application process. After the conclusion of the fourth season, ] left the program, and was replaced by ].

Those in Group B, were not seen as favorites and were declared "standby acts." These acts performed for 11 remaining spots after Group A (Episode 512) (January 26, 2011).
The fifth season was won by soul singer ], with ] singer ] finishing in second, and blacklight performaners Fighting Gravity placing third. During its broadcast, the season averaged about 11.11 million viewers, with its season finale being the most watched in the program's history with approximately 16.41 million viewers.

The auditions of the Group C acts were declared by the judges to be the best and these acts moved on to compete in the quarterfinal shows directly without performing in Las Vegas.

Auditions for the fifth season's competition took place during Winter until mid-Spring 2010. Auditions were filmed in ], ], ], ], ] and at the ]. ===Group A: Judges' Favorites===
For the season, format changes included the addition of two new rounds in the quarter-finals. The first new round was arranged for online auditions, which in itself was modified in rules and arrangements. Prior to the fifth season, most online auditions were made via ] and did not guarantee that any submissions made would secure a place in the competition. However, these online applications were later changed so that applicants could submit recorded auditions on a special ] channel. Eleven acts were picked by the judges, while a twelfth would be selected by voting from online viewers, guaranteeing a place in the competition via a special quarter-final round. The second new round was a reformatting of the Wildcard system. Unlike the original format, the judges could each pick about four participants who were eliminated from the competition, either at the Vegas Verdicts stage or in the quarter-finals. The decision to include two new quarter-finals to the competition's schedule, meant that the number of quarter-finalists allowed to move on to the semi-finals, were reduced to around four from each quarter-final. The top three were voted on by the public, and the fourth was chosen by the judges from those placed fourth and fifth respectively, in the public vote.

Another change in the format was a deeper involvement of guest performers in ''America's Got Talent''. While the program had mainly made use of them for entertainment during the Results episode aired after the Performance episodes in the previous season, additional guest performers became involved in the program after the rules on performances in the live grand-final were changed. Participants could each conduct a performance alongside a guest performer, with the choice determined by the type of act they performed. Season 6

The fifth season of America's Got Talent, an American television reality show talent competition, premiered in Singapore on MediaCorp Channel 5 on November 26, 2010. Soul singer Michael Grimm was named the winner on May 26, 2011, beating 10-year-old classical crossover singer Jackie Evancho.

The fifth season was re-run on Channel 5 in 2012 on Mondays to Fridays at 6:00pm

Selection Process

The season 5 selection process appears to carry over that of the past two seasons, but the Las Vegas Round was changed to that of the second and third seasons, which gave the performers a second chance to showcase their act. Instead of an audition consisting of performers who submitted their acts on MySpace, as has been done in previous seasons, the year contained a quarterfinal made up of twelve acts who submitted their auditions on YouTube (eleven selected by the judges and one selected by online voters).

Preliminary Auditions

The fifth season of America's got TalEnt, premiered on MediaCorp Channel 5 on November 26, 2010.

This season, auditions were held in six major U.S. cities: Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Universal Orlando Resort, Portland, and Chicago. Host Nick Cannon and judges Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne returned to the show. Howie Mandel joined the show, taking the place of David Hasselhoff as the third judge.

The auditions lasted for ten episodes and 89 acts advanced.

Las Vegas Week

From 70,000 acts in the nationwide auditions, the judges advanced the top 108 acts to Las Vegas to compete head to head for a spot in the Top 48.

Those in Group B, were not seen as favorites and were declared "standby acts." These acts performed for 11 remaining spots after Group A (Episode 512) (January 26, 2011).

The auditions of the Group C acts were declared by the judges to be the best and these acts moved on to compete in the quarterfinal shows directly without performing in Las Vegas.
