Elias Hossain Bengali: ইলিয়াস হোসেন, a renowned Bangladeshi journalist famous for his fearless investigative reporting on corruption and abuse of power, became a prominent voice for accountability in Bangladesh. His relentless pursuit of truth ultimately forced him into exile in the USA.

Early Life and Education

Elias Hossain was born in Khaspara a small village, now under Darshana Thana in Chuadanga District, western part of Bangladesh. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong passion for justice and transparency that ultimately defined his journey in journalism, despite he pursued his education in English Literature.

Career

Elias Hossain began his career as a journalist in ETV a reputed private television channel in Bangladesh. “Ekusher Chokh” an investigative program where he used to reflect all the unfair means of the society, that quickly establishing himself as a most popular crime reporter. He focused on exposing corruption, human rights violations, and injustices in the country.

Elias was in Ekusher Chokh in 2014

Over the time, Elias’s work gained widespread attention for his commitment to truth. He tackled stories that many others avoided, bringing hidden issues to light and holding powerful individuals accountable. His dedication to investigative journalism earned him a significant following and respect within the media community.

Due to his strong stance against corruption, human rights violations, and injustice, Elias Hossain, along with Mr. Abdus Salam, Chairman of ETV, became the target of numerous false cases filed by individuals and the government of Bangladesh at that time. While Chairman Abdus Salam and Senior Report, Dr. Kanak Sarwar were detained in connection with these cases, senior reporter Elias Hossain managed to evade capture.

Exile in USA

During the tenure of the Awami League government in Bangladesh, Elias gained prominence as an investigative journalist, focusing on exposing allegations of government corruption, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and abuses of power. His fearless reporting often brought him into direct conflict with influential figures in the government. Consequently, he faced multiple lawsuits and was sentenced to imprisonment.

In 2015, due to escalating threats to his personal safety forced Elias to leave Bangladesh and seek asylum in the United States. His decision to live in exile marked a turning point in his career. Elias continued to utilize digital platforms, including YouTube with over 4.2 million of subscribers and a verified Facebook Page , to expose critical issues in Bangladesh ensuring that his voice remained influential despite his physical distance. His relentless commitment to truth ensured that his voice remained influential while in exile.

Contribution in movement for Democracy in 2024

The freedom of the press in Bangladesh has faced significant challenges during the tenure of the Awami League government. Journalists have often faced intimidation, harassment, and legal actions for publishing content against government. The Digital Security Act (DSA), introduced to consolidate the power of the government, has been widely criticized both locally and internationally. Many media outlets have faced censorship, while only government-supported journalism appears to operate without restrictions. This situation has raised serious concerns about press freedom and the state of democracy in the country.

Elias Hossain, alongside Dr. Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey, Pinaki Bhattacharya, and Kanak Sarwar, played a vital role in igniting public sentiment for Democracy against Sheikh Hasina's government. Their collective efforts brought an end to over a decade of autocratic rule under Sheikh Hasina. On August 5, 2024, following massive student-led demonstrations and nationwide public protests, Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position and fled the country.

As a result, on August 8, 2024, an interim government was established under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
