Revision as of 22:05, 18 February 2008
Template:Stargate character Dr. Radek Zelenka is a fictional character in the television series Stargate Atlantis, portrayed by David Nykl. An Atlantis expedition scientist from the Czech Republic, Zelenka is an expert on Ancient technology, second only to Rodney McKay. Zelenka frequently appears for expository scenes in the control room with the leader of the expedition and with McKay. He first appeared in the early Season 1 episode Template:Sgcite and has since appeared in approximately half of each season's episodes. He also appeared in cross-over episode Template:Sgcite of Stargate SG-1, along with several of his Atlantis co-stars. He is confirmed to appear in Season 5 of Atlantis.
Appearances
Radek Zelenka makes his first appearance in the Season 1 episode Template:Sgcite where he works in a Puddle Jumper to help free Sheppard's team in another Puddle Jumper that is stuck in an active Stargate. Zelenka and McKay later work on figuring out a way to protect Atlantis from the massive hurricane heading. Template:Sgcite reveals that Zelenka has been given Dr. Beckett's ATA Gene Therapy, but it did not take effect. Zelenka inadvertently discovers Atlantis' deep-space sensors in Template:Sgcite and detects three Wraith Hive-Ships on their way to the city. In Template:Sgcite, Zelenka devises a computer virus to protect the Ancient database from falling in the wrong hands, should Atlantis become lost to the human expedition. Zelenka also aids McKay in completing the Genii nuclear bombs that would be used to destroy two Wraith hive ships. "Duet" shows Zelenka off-world for the first time, where he faces the task to restore McKay and Cadman to her proper body after their capture in a Wraith dart. He works alongside McKay on an experimental Ancient power generator, Project Arcturus, but McKay not listening to Zelenka's advice causes the death of a scientist. Zelenka discovers a second Wraith Hive ship heading towards Atlantis in Template:Sgcite. In Template:Sgcite, Zelenka and Major Lorne are on-board the Orion when they engaged a hive ship in combat, but the Daedalus beams them out. Zelenka appears in the Stargate SG-1 episode Template:Sgcite, where he notifies Dr. Weir of a Wraith hive ship moving towards the Odyssey. In Template:Sgcite, Radek is badly wounded, but McKay, who acquired Ancient healing powers in the episode, heals him. McKay later admits that Zelenka is "a brilliant scientist and a decent human being" and apologizes for so often putting him down. In Season 4, Zelenka is instrumental in the attempts to repair Atlantis when it is stranded in space. Producer Joseph Mallozzi confirmed Zelenka's appearance for Season 5.
Concept and creation
In order to present cooperation with other nations or other groups of people, the Stargate Atlantis producers were looking to cast a Russian character. David Nykl, a Czech-Canadian actor from the West Coast, participated in a normal audition process, and upon discovering that Nykl could speak Czech fluently, the producers changed the character's nationality to Czech. Zelenka was intended to appear only in the Season 1 "Thirty-Eight Minutes", but he made such an impression that they first wrote him into the next episode, "Suspicion" (which was originally supposed to be just McKay), and later made him a semi-regular character. The producers chose the name "Radek", a fairly common Czech name, right in the beginning, and Nykl had no hand in choosing it.
Since the show's beginning, Zelenka has appeared in approximately half of each season's episodes. Zelenka frequently appears in the control room with Weir and with McKay overall for expository scenes. After Amanda Tapping's Carter replaced Dr. Weir, the producers put more emphasis on his interaction with her than just with McKay, According to Nykl, the character grew from a supporting to a more regular presence until season 3. Nykl has not been assured by the writers of anything, and usually gets his script whenever they choose to include the character. As of Season 4, he is not under contract. As of the beginning of Season 3, no scenes with Zelenka were cut for time, and in fact, extra scenes involving Zelenka were shot in the first episodes of the season 3 to fill time. Zelenka as a careful and precise scientist suppliments McKay's scientific decisions. In Nykl's words, he attempts Zelenka to show a human side to the science.
Translations
Being Czech-Canadian, Nykl speaks fluent Czech. Approximately half of Zelenka's Czech lines are scripted (in English), which Nykl then translates verbatim. Nykl ad-libs the other half, which usually includes swearing. While Zelenka usually only says the occasional short phrase in Czech, he effusively describes Atlantis rising from the ocean entirely in his native language in "Letters from Pegasus". In Template:Sgcite, David Nykl let Zelenka say in Czech that he cannot "work with these actors". Zelenka encourages his co-workers to finish their job in Template:Sgcite, labels McKay as an idiot in "Critical Mass", complains about being forced to work under water in "Grace Under Pressure", curses in "No Man's Land" and "Quarantine" (in which he also frets about making an idiot out of himself in front of Carter), and swoons about Lucius Lavin in "Irresistible". In "McKay and Mrs. Miller", McKay tells Zelenka in Czech to "take care".
Reception
Often being the bearer of critical situations, Zelenka earned the nickname "Mr. Bad News" among fans. TV Zone called Zelenka a "cerebral foil for the equally brainy Dr. McKay" and referred to their "their friendly rivalry".

- Na dně moře máme „fail safe“ , mechanismus. Obrovskou silou vytrhl kotvu města ze dna oceánu. My jsme.. Zhrozili jsme jsme.. Zhrozili jsme se. Neuveřitelný, co se to děje a ten hluk; celé město se třáslo jako při zemětřesení. To bylo něco neuvěritelnýho. A najednou... se hneme. Celé město stoupalo. Stoupalo nahoru, nahoru k hladině. To, to bylo něco neuveřitelnýho a a a a a věže prorazily hladinu a vyjeli jsme nahoru nahoru a vody, vlny, vodopády, všechno teče z těch vejšek. A my... vystřelili jsme nahoru, úplně, úplně na vršek.. Slunce.... Sluníčko, prostě.... proudilo do všech oken. Do smrti, do smrti na to nezapomenu.: On the bottom of the sea we have a failsafe mechanism. It pulled up the anchor of the city from the bottom of the sea with great force. We.... we were.... we were scared. That was incredible, what happened? And that noise. The whole city was shaking, it was like an earthquake. That was so incredible. And then we were moving. The whole city was rising. It was rising up, rising up to the ocean surface. It was, it was really incredible and the towers broke through the surface. We were going up. Water, waves, waterfalls were falling down from the heights. And we... we were shot up, right to the top. Sun... just shine... It was shining through all the windows. I'll remember it for the rest of my life... for the rest of my life. Drž se, miláčku.: Take care, honey.
- Ježiši, já s těma hercema nemůžu dělat: Jesus, I can't work with these actors.

- Ty vole "Say hi to the kids for me", já ti dám, ty seš takovej vůl.: Damn it, 'Say hi to the kids for me' , you're gonna get it from me, you're such an idiot.
- Do prdele, to je na hovno tohle to, kdo to vymyslel že budeme pod vodou tentokrát?: "For cryin' out loud", this sucks. We're gonna be under water this time - whose idea was that?
- I am trying, do prdele!

Se sem nevejdu...fuj to smrdí! Ježišmarija... Jéžiš, to snad né...: I'll have the power off in no time. Jesus, that's unbelievable, I'm such a moron! She'll think I'm a total idiot. Well, what else should I do? No, not this again... Don't fit here...ugh, this place stinks! Jesus Christ... Oh tell me it's not happening!
