Marriage
She is married to television executive Tom Freston. Tom Freston was an executive at Viacom in charge of MTV Networks until 2006. In 2007, Oprah Winfrey approached Tom Freston to head up her start up cable newtwork OWN. According to a Fortune magazine article, Oprah Winfrey "suspected that Kathy could be her ally in finding a connection with Tom." She was not aware of Kathy Freston's work before her attempt to recruit Tom Freston, as (according to the same article) she served the couple chicken and an assortment of meats. Since recruiting Tom Preston to consult for OWN, Kathy Freston has made a number of appearances on Oprah's show.
In 2007, the couple endowed a scholarship at Emerson College to promote diversity at the school.
