Articles we cover
Notability and sourcing
Articles on centenarians and supercentenarians are biographies and the notability guidelines for biographies apply. Significant independent coverage in reliable sources is required. While some long-lived people are notable principally for their advanced age, e.g., Jeanne Calment, longevity itself, without more is subject to guidance on one-event biographies. A subject with only one or two reliable source might belong on a list, rather than in a stand-alone biography, unless two solid reliable sources provide significant other details that make the subject notable.
Some centenarians and supercentenarians are notable for reasons in addition to their longevity, e.g., Leila Denmark. In such cases, notable aspects of their lives that are reported in reliable sources should be included in their biographies. Although not the primary focus of this project, cases (usually historical) where the advanced age is in doubt should be considered for notability using the same criteria as the cases where the advanced age has been verified by an independent body, e.g., Old Tom Parr is notable. Supercentenarians over 110 should also be included in list articles (line-item notability), whether or not they have a separate biography because of notability beyond their longevity.
When a person is still living, the strict, exacting guidelines on biographies of living people apply and should be editors' guidestar in making editorial judgments. In particular, a statement that a person falsified his or her age or date of birth should not be made unless it is clearly stated in a reliable source.
Guinness World Records is a reliable source for ages of birth and death, and for whether an individual held a record for longevity.
When sufficient reliable secondary sources demonstrate article-level notability, the following questionable primary or tertiary sources may be used for limited purposes only. They may supplement reliable sources to the degree permitted by local article consensus, but an article should not be based primarily on questionable sources, and should not rely on such sources to make assertions without attribution (e.g., assertions about parties' history of records broken, rank-order placement, or current status as alive or dead in the absence of reliable updates). These sources are generally acceptable for line-item notability in lists, but must be used with care and usually attribution, especially when they disagree:
- The journal Rejuvenation Research should be attributed and contextualized, especially when quoting another source listed below.
- Gerontology Research Group data from grg.org should be attributed and used only as backup to reliable sources.
- The Yahoo! group health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Worlds_Oldest_People, like other discussion groups, is deprecated in favor of using any reliable sources it quotes. Uncontradicted Yahoo! WOP data can be quoted on an article talk to satisfy verifiability of a reliable source.
