District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority

Why can't I edit this article? It doesn't appear to be semi-protected (I don't see a lock symbol on the upper right corner). 198.228.194.216 (talk) 01:17, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

The article has never been protected. And no edit filter prevented your edit. Try clicking on this direct link. Goodvac (talk) 01:22, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
Nevermind. The edit buttons are now visible. I don't know what happened. Thanks. 198.228.194.216 (talk) 01:25, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
There is a problem where some users sometimes see a "View source" tab instead of "Edit" on unprotected pages. If this happens then try clicking "View source" anyway. It's the same url as the "Edit" tab and it should work if the page is not protected. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:47, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
Yes, that was the issue. Thanks for the helpful tip. 198.228.194.216 (talk) 03:45, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

    translate foriegn websites into english

Is there a way to translate foriegn language websites into english? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.40.100.70 (talk) 01:59, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Try Google Translate: http://translate.google.com/#. Like any machine translation, it is less-than-perfect, but you can often make reasonable sense of the output. AndyTheGrump (talk) 02:30, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan Jr.

There is an error in Justice Brennan's bio under "Early Life." It states that he and his wife had four children, but in reality they only had three: William III, Hugh and Nancy. They did not have a child named Shirley Burns Brennan. Reference: Recent biography by Seth Stern, Justice Brennan: Liberal Champion — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.143.69.111 (talk) 02:11, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Done. SwisterTwister (talk) 02:27, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

The alleged fourth child was added by an IP who claimed to be related but I can find no evidence of this so I support the removal. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:43, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

It depends on the article, image location and image license, but all images must be uploaded before they can be used. See Misplaced Pages:Images and come back with more info if you still have questions. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:56, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for your suggestion. You'll need to supply a reference to a "reliable source" (such as a newspaper, book, news website) to add a fact like that.
As long as you have a reference, please feel free to add it yourself. Misplaced Pages is a wiki, so anyone can edit almost any article by simply following the edit this page link at the top.
The Misplaced Pages community encourages you to be bold in updating pages. Don't worry too much about making honest mistakes—they're likely to be found and corrected quickly. If you're not sure how editing works, check out how to edit a page, or use the sandbox to try out your editing skills. New contributors are always welcome. You don't even need to log in (although there are many reasons why you might want to).  Chzz  ►  07:29, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
Do you mean List of sole survivors of airline accidents or incidents? That list includes the Dutch boy Ruben van Assouw from Afriqiyah Airways Flight 771 which crashed in Tripoli last year. He was added a year ago so perhaps you saw an outdated mirror of the list at another site outside Misplaced Pages's control. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:41, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

    File Histories

Would it be possible to make it so that on

The software only knows which pages currently use a file; I don't know of any efficient way to find which pages used to use a file but no longer do so. The current uses are listed in the "File links" part of the file page. Also, if you are looking at a file page, the "What links here" link in the left sidebar should give you this information. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:22, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Deleted post in the talk page of Pietro Badoglio

Few hours ago I wrote a post on the discussion page of article Pietro Badoglio. Later I discovered it does not show. I checked the page history and discovered it had been reverted i.e. deleted, but the name of the user who reverted the page does not show either. However if I am logged in my post does show!!!???

I do not know what this does mean, anyhow I think this fact is absolutely unacceptable and foreign to the spirit of Misplaced Pages. Please note: actually I did not edit the article according to my views, I just posted some remarks and comments on the talk page in order to inform readers on facts, mostly known to everybody (and accepted by historians) and answer questions asked by other readers in the discussion above. The only speculative point in my post (a tiny part) is the issue of the agreement between B. and Albert Kesselring which is now accepted by many Italians (historians too) as it is the only way to give a plausible explanation to a long series of events: it has been testified indirectly by witnesses on the place.

Whatever the case the suppression of information on a discussion page is a kind of behaviour that I do not think can be tolerated as it amounts to censorship and is in contrast with freedom of speech and research.Aldrasto11 (talk) 12:21, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

The only edits I can see that you've made to the talk page of Pietro Badoglio were today, and have not been reverted. I'm afraid I can't see any sign of a previous change, or reversion there. Suppression of anything leaves a "username removed" or "edit summary removed" notice. Could you elaborate? Is it possible you made the comment somewhere, or that you did not save it? Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 12:29, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
All indications are that it's a cache issue (and you are jumping to large conclusions). You were not reverted; nothing was deleted. Your computer saved a cached version of the page for efficiency of memory use, and is displaying that when you are logged out. Just clear your cache.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:01, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
I see three edits, made roughly six hours ago, related to "Fascist party membership and other issues". They are all present. Are those the edits in question?--SPhilbrickT 13:02, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
This is definitely a cache issue and not a reversion. The cached version could be on your computer, at your ISP, or on one of Wikimedia's servers which hasn't updated for some resaon. The bottom of Talk:Pietro Badoglio should currently say "This page was last modified on 28 May 2011 at 07:26." (or an offset if you are logged in with another time zone than UTC in your preferences). If you see an older time then you are seeing a cached version. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:31, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

In the article Sony, does anyone else see this image appearing inside the infobox? The edit adding the image was reverted by ClueBot NG, yet I still see the image in the infobox, even in the latest revision. Clearing my browser cache also had no effect. Seems this was a browser issue. The image disappeared. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 14:54, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Bill Nye the Science Guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/Bill_nye)

This sentence in the "Bill Nye" article contain erroneous imformation: "In 2004 and 2005, Nye hosted 100 Greatest Discoveries, an award-winning series produced by THINKFilm for The Science Channel and in high definition on the Discovery HD Theater." The error is in the attribution of "THINKFilm" as the producer of the series "100 Greatest Discoveries."

There are two companies named "thinkfilm." One, "thinkiflm", a production company located in Washington, DC (www.thinkfilm-inc.com) is the actual and correct producer of the "100 Greatest Discoveries" series. "THINKFilm" is a defunct/bankrupt film distribution company that was located in Toronto, Canada which had nothing to do with the "100 Greatest Discoveries" project. This confusion of the two similarly named companies should be corrected as the attribution of professional credits for production companies like "thinkfilm" is an important business credit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.67.25.242 (talk) 17:12, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

    Disambiguation and diacriticals

If you have two people of roughly equal importance, and their names only differ in that one name has a diacritical - Zoë Smith and Zoe Smith - for instance... how then would you set up the disambiguation page? - ThafireAndThteel (talk) 18:22, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

I would name the page without the diacritical. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:37, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
Whereas I would use the diacritic. As long as both are linked from a disambiguation page, then it shouldn't matter too much. Each page should link to the dab page. Mjroots (talk) 20:40, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
If there's just the two, I wouldn't bother with a disambiguation page - I'd name them "Zoë Smith" and "Zoe Smith" (which is fine) - and add a hatnote on the top of each - for example, on the top of "Zoe Smith" you'd put something like {{About|the English author|the Australian musician|Zoë Smith}} (example only; picking random info) - which will put,
This page is about the English author. For the Australian musician, see Zoë Smith.
See Template:Other uses for the many options.  Chzz  ►  22:09, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

    Georgia

Someone or something is preventing me from adding the name of Nino Burjanadze in the sub section 'Silver Revolution 2011' of the Georgia (country) article, also Democratic Movement-United Georgia omits the word Georgia when you try to include this. I have checked the view history tab and I can't see any actual vandalism, all I can see its some kind of unexplained vandalism Zylog79 (talk) 19:35, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

    Nino Burjanadze

If you try to edit the above paragraph on Georgia, notice the name Nino Burjanadze is not visible ???????? Something fishy going on here? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zylog79 (talkcontribs) 19:39, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

If it is, I think it's just you. I can see the name Nino Burjanadze in both windows. Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 20:43, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
    Me, editing the above section
Works for me - as shown in the screen print image here.
The only thing I notice is, "Nino Burjanadze" has a red wiggly underline, because it isn't a recognized dictionary word. Is it possible you've got something set which makes non-dictionary words not show up, on your browser?  Chzz  ►  22:20, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
Can you kindly take a look at this link http://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Georgia_%28country%29&action=edit&section=19 and see if you can see why the second to last reference (90) has been 'modified'? And if the name Nino Burjanadze appears? Thank you Zylog79 (talk) 01:35, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Zylog there seems to be something wrong with your browser. In your edit here you deleted some random words which I am sure you didn't intend to delete. —teb728 t c 02:47, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
In this series of edits to this section you deleted Nino Burjanadze three times and Georgia once. I have repaired them here and will try to repair your edits to the article. —teb728 t c 03:00, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Hi Teb728, thanks for your help, I ma using a different computer today, I was using a standard browser Firefox 3, otherwise I have no explanation why those words are being blocked?? Zylog79 (talk) 14:56, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
One thing to try then, is upgrade to Firefox 4 (unless you have some good reason not to). That might solve it - it wouldn't necessarily tell us why you had the trouble, but if it fixes it, it fixes it.  Chzz  ►  02:13, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

    File:TonkPile.jpg

    Hello:

I was wondering where you obtained the photo in the following link:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/File:TonkPile.jpg

These are my cats, and while I don't mind that you're using one of my photos, I would like credit for the photo, and to correct one cat description: the blue point IS a blue MINK. Her eyes are closed, but you can rest assured that they are aqua, which makes her a mink.

Maria Sulikowski — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.81.59.18 (talk) 19:56, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Ckahler uploaded the picture 06-09-2006. They claimed the picture as their own work at that time. GB fan (talk) 20:07, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
    File:CubbyLego.jpg
Ckahler - Courtney Kahler - also wrote, I added a couple of my Tonks, but they aren't the best shots to show body coloration and such. I hope others will feel free to add and/or edit the photos! My 3 are CFA registered, 2 of which are grand premiers in CFA. So they are good representations of the breed, at least in America. Tonks outside the US look a bit different.
The file has extended data to show it was taken at 23:20, 5 September 2006 with a Olympus digital camera.
The user uploaded another picture at the same time, shown here - File:CubbyLego.jpg. That one was apparently taken 5 March 2005, using the same model of camera (according to the EXIF information). It would appear to be the same platinum mink tonk from the first photo. Do you also recognize that one?
Are you absolutely certain it is one of your photos? I'm genuinely sorry to question you; we certainly take copyright matters very seriously. We try to assume the best from everyone, but that includes the original uploader - who did click to say "This is entirely my own work", back in 2006.  Chzz  ►  21:38, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Why so hard to add photo?

Wow, it is like deciphering an alien code in the dark with music blaring and police dogs attacking. After much searching I uploaded a photo, exactly copied and pasted the precise name into the precise spot in the 'edit' space for the article, deleted the old, and now neither one is visible. Went back to the upload screen, found that the new file is there, tried it again, as above--no success. 3X--no success. Out of ideas on how to decipher vague instructions that when followed lead no where. Took me 15-20 tries to find this page. Bluestem (talk) 20:47, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

The picture, File:Manfreda inflorescence, flowers with petals intact.jpg is showing up in Manfreda maculosa. You might try purging] the server to see if that fixes the problem. I did make one small change to the article to make the image be a thumbnail vs full size. GB fan (talk) 20:55, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

    Copyright Infringement Help

Hi I just got a message from user Nortynort about the article Jim Chapman (Canadian) having copyright infringing content. I was under the impression that it was just the second paragraph (which I deleted) that had the copyright material, but I was sent that message after i deleted the paragraph. I do have permission to use the content in question, but I realized that the paragraph that had the content in it was unnesissary, so I deleted it instead. If there is still a problem, I can do the whole "The contents of this website (or page, if you are specifically releasing one section) are available for modification and reuse under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License 3.0 and the GNU Free Documentation License, unversioned with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts." thing, it's just a bit of a hassle. Thanks in advance Goodbucket (talk) 21:26, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

It sounds like you have either got permission from the copyright holder, or are the copyright holder. However, we don't know this. In the latter case, see Misplaced Pages:DCM. In the former, it's probably easier to ask NortyNort or post at Misplaced Pages:Media copyright questions, which would also be a good venue to get more information if I've understood incorrectly. Nelson Mandela is semi-protected (notice the little picture of a lock in the corner). From the protection log comments it is unlikely to be unprotected again anytime soon. You can suggest changes on the talk page or make the edit using an established Misplaced Pages account. (Making your own account is "a good thing".) Rmhermen (talk) 23:24, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
You would first need to create a Misplaced Pages account (which I see you have) and then become autoconfirmed. This happens automatically after you have made at least 10 edits over at least 4 days. Since you already have several edits today you should be able to edit these types of articles soon. Welcome to Misplaced Pages by the way! doomgaze (talk) 23:37, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
    (short version)
'coz you are new. In 4 days, after you've made 10 edits (you've already made 7), you'll be able to edit these semi-protected pages.  Chzz  ►  00:45, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
And you are free to make edits to a majority of the articles on Misplaced Pages, there are only a select few which you will be prevented from editing. Tiggerjay (talk) 07:19, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Converting IP history to a handle

I have been editing as an IP for quite some time. I would like to start an account with a handle (Something clever I hope). Q: Is there any way that my history can be brought over? I have had about 10 or so different IP's (they seem to change every few months, the latest happened today). I have a pretty good idea of the past IP's and the articles I improved. 208.85.0.114 (talk) 23:20, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, out software doesn't allow for this. What you could do is create an account and write on your userpage "I edited using IP#1 from A to B, with IP #2 from B to C, etc." (Do keep in mind that it would allow people to possibly identify you, if that's something you're concerned about). Question about Alexandra Powers

Should the Category:American_atheists go in the article Alexandra_Powers becuase it says in her personal life: Powers does not adhere to any religion. Neptunekh2 (talk) 03:21, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

I believe so since atheists don't practice any form of religion. SwisterTwister (talk) 03:24, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Not "adhering" to any particular religion is not in any way the same as being an atheist. Please remove the category. And, Neptunekh2, please read WP:BLPCAT, which deals with adding sexuality and religion categories to articles about living people. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 03:50, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Agreed with DC. Being an atheist is not the same as practicing no religion. 216.93.212.245 (talk) 19:56, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
More than that: She say she prays when she feels sad; if she is an atheist, who do you think she pray to? —teb728 t c 21:37, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in a deity. Not adhering to any religion does not mean she doesn't believe in a deity. So we don't have enough information to say she is an atheist. Also WP:BLPCAT, a section of the policy on living people, says "Categories regarding religious beliefs and sexual orientation should not be used unless the subject has publicly self-identified with the belief or orientation in question; and the subject's beliefs or sexual orientation are relevant to their notable activities or public life, according to reliable published sources." There is nothing in the article to say she has self-identified as an atheist nor is it relevant to her notable activities or public life. So it does not belong. List of English football transfers winter 2002–03

I have been heavily editing this page but when I went to save it, it took ages and came up with a Wikimedia Error. I have had to copy the table to Microsoft Word, in the hope that I could add all the references there and replace the table in the article, but it again takes a long time before producing an error. What can I do and why is this happening? The article probably has a couple of hundred references, but this isn't usually a problem in a long list. 03md 04:04, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

I noticed that[REDACTED] was having some performance issues and was totally down at some points. That might have been your problem. Otherwise, I recommend you update in sections instead of the entire article at a time. Tiggerjay (talk) 07:13, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Old style versus new style dates

I have a question regarding dates. In the Misplaced Pages articles, dates before about 1753 are given in which calendar? Are they given in the Old Style (Julian) calendar, or in the New Style (Gregorian) calendar? This question is pretty important. For example, in the article about Blaise Pascal, his year of birth is given as 1623. Is this date already converted to the New Style (Gregorian) calendar, or not?

    Tandava9 (talk) 04:40, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

"France changed from Julian to Gregorian Calendar on 9 December 1582 (O.S.) where the next day was 20 December 1582 (N.S.)." (from Old Style and New Style dates) "Dates of events in countries using the Gregorian calendar are given in the Gregorian calendar. This includes some of the Continent of Europe from 1582, the British Empire from 14 September 1752, and Russia from 14 February 1918" (from WP:MOSNUM#Calendars). Hans Adler 04:52, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Maybe you landed on an article and thought we were directly connected with the subject? Technical question for footnote experts

At List of postal entities#UPU members, a single footnote is used to source what will be 163 out of 191 entries (once the list is complete). Using the {{reflist}} system, this generates a rather long and ugly list of backlinks (a,b,c...aa,ab,...). Is there some way to suppress this or is there a more elegant method? Thanks,  Sandstein  08:40, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

You could cheat; see - hope that'll be self-explanatory, from the code. Obviously, it could be done 'neater' with a specific one-off template. But give me a shout otherwise.  Chzz  ►  08:54, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! I tried it at List of postal entities#UPU members and interestingly it works while in section edit preview mode, but not after saving (the footnote links do not jump down to the reference). Do you know what I might have done wrong?  Sandstein  09:04, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

    I have asked for a fix for this— Template:Bug. ---— Gadget850 (Ed)  11:18, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! It still doesn't seem to work correctly with groups, but I'll have to work around this. (The links now go to the ungrouped footnote rather than to the first footnote in the "UPU" group.)  Sandstein  11:56, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Mhm; the reference links are numbered, regardless of grouping - starting with zero.

If you look at User:Chzz/Sandstein1, notice if you hover your mouse over the first ref (or click it), it links to http://en.wikipedia.org/User:Chzz/Sandstein1#cite_note-0 - and the second reference labelled , which just happens to be grouped, links to http://en.wikipedia.org/User:Chzz/Sandstein1#cite_note-1

So, if you wanted those others to link to that, you'd need to use ] (or, rather, ]). See User:Chzz/Sandstein2.

I'm afraid the reference numbers (and thus the links) are out of our control, so if people add another ref above 'yours', that'll screw things up. I don't know of a way around that, unless... well, I suppose you could put in a manual anchor thingy using #tag, and link to that...but that'd make the code a bit more complex. Er. You can kinda see what I mean in User:Chzz/help/footnoteref?

You're work-around looks fine though. But if you need any further help, give me a shout. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  01:57, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

    Signature limit too restrictive

    Hi,

I'm trying to set the following as my signature, but Misplaced Pages won't let me, as it's above the 255-character limit:

    <span style="font-family:Tahoma">&mdash;] ] <span style="font-size:x-small">({{CURRENTTIME}}, {{CURRENTDAY}} {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}})</span>

Instead, I'm having to use the deprecated <font> tag:

    <font face="Tahoma">—] ] <small>({{SUBST:CURRENTTIME}}, {{SUBST:CURRENTDAY}} {{SUBST:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{SUBST:CURRENTYEAR}})</small></font>

My desired signature is 284 characters long. Would I be able to get an signature extention? I'd rather not have to use a depreciated HTML tag.

    Tommyjb Talk! (19:23, 29 May 2011)

What's wrong with a plain signature? Personally, I think the current limit is too lax. I'd like to see no custom sigs at all. DuncanHill (talk) 19:28, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
There are a number of Wikipedian who will just chop off your signature on their talk pages if it takes up more than a given number of lines in an edit box, and others who are distinctly unimpressed with the ostentation of showy signatures. Your current one looks fine. Bielle (talk) 19:37, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Your signature when used on a talk page is much shorter than the 255-character limit; it's just those magic words that make it too long for the preference box. You could experiment by putting the markup in a sub-page, User:Tommyjb/sig, and then configuring your signature as {{subst:User:Tommyjb/sig}}.
When you create the subpage you will have to replace each "subst:" with <includeonly>subst:</includeonly> so that the magic words are not lost when you save the subpage. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:48, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
WP:SIG#NoTemplates suggests using a template like that is forbidden. Rehevkor 20:04, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Actually is says that substitution is permissible but discouraged. From the sounds of the conversation above it appears that this would be one of the exceptions to why it is discouraged. It sounds like it would be shorter than the 255 character limit if it is substituted if I am reading right. GB fan (talk) 20:10, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Many people object to long sigs due to their look when pages you have signed are being edited. Please keep your sig short enough so as not to be disruptive. 216.93.212.245 (talk) 20:00, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
I suspect putting the date in brackets like that could screw up bots recognising it as a signature too. Rehevkor 20:06, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Hmm, I don't know much about Misplaced Pages bots. I wonder whether that will be a problem. Tommyjb Talk! (20:38, 29 May 2011)
SineBot must have recognised the date/time in your first post in this thread, otherwise it would have added its {{undated}} comment. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:15, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
As alluded to by John of Reading, my (post-processed) signature above is only 170 characters long, well below the 255-character limit. Tommyjb Talk! (20:32, 29 May 2011)

If someone puts in an article an external link to a video that I believe is a copyright violation, do I handle such a problem based on the instructions at WP:CP or WP:MCQ? The video is on YouTube here.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:13, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
What in the world is the context to link to that?! Point the user to WP:YOUTUBE and let them know it is a copyright violation to link to copyrighted videos. CTJF83 22:43, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
It's for the Goldie Hawn article. It's a collage of copyrighted film material plus a background audio of a copyrighted song, apparently put together by some user who then posted it to YouTube. To me, it's a clear copyright violation, but I suppose one could try to argue fair use. However, in my view, Misplaced Pages editors, in this kind of situation, should not be appointing themselves federal judges and making a fair use determination, which is difficult enough to do even for judges. In any event, I pointed all this out to the editor who wanted to insert it. If you want to read our extended discussion on the Hawn Talk page, feel free. I'm not continuing the discussion with him, and I told him so. I already went much further and spent more time on it than it deserved. However, the editor is experienced and civil (I'm a sucker for civility), so I kept going, hoping I would get through to him. The only good news is he hasn't tried to add it back in.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:11, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
    I agree. CTJF83 00:13, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Shameless plug: WP:VIDEOLINK . There is zero precedent for fair use with YouTube videos but linking to them may be contributory infringement. The uploader's channel appears to be full of violations. We should not be mirroring it. Don't get the Foundation in legal trouble! "Hidden" revisions of a page (offline) ??

    Hello,

Sorry to disturb you but I experiment a problem on the page Talk:Dominique Strauss-Kahn sexual assault case. I don't know how to resolve it ? I noticed that the discussions on this page seems to be "locked", and all contributions after May 26th are "hidden" to anonymous users (not connected). This is very strange.

I tried to purge cache with the parameter "?action=purge" but nothing appens. Then, I saw on mediawiki that some pages revisions can be "hidden" by using "RevisionDelete" or "Extension:Oversight". I am questionning myself, and maybe an user/admin add this page on "hide revisions/log" with malice ??

Could you help me, and explain to me why all contributions of this page after May 26th are hidden to offline users ?? Thanks a lot !

Nota : You must be "offline" to see the problems (not connected with your login/password)

    Esthertree (talk) 22:16, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

There is no way to hide comments from only users who are not logged in (other than something called 'pending changes', but we're not using that any more, and it was never used on talk pages).
Can you see, for example, this? That was added on 29th.
Could it be, perhaps, that your browser is struggling because of the sheer size of that talk page? It's quite a big one, at 391 kB.
Are you using quite an old web browser? Under certain environments, Firefox 2.0 and Internet Explorer 6 are known to have difficulty loading articles over about 400 KB.
If you think it might be browser-related, perhaps you could try updating it. Or, give us more details.
I assure you though, nothing is being hidden. If items are revision-deleted, then only admins can see them - it's just like deletion of an entire page. And if they're oversighted (or 'suppressed'), then only the oversight team can see them (not even admins).
But, there is no function that hides things only from anon users.  Chzz  ►  01:28, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
(Incidentally - I did log out, and check. The page looks identical, to me, whether I'm logged in or not)  Chzz  ►  01:29, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
The problem occurs for me too, but I can fix it. My fix might work for you too. Try adding &limit=50 after the page title and before the 'history' part (so the full URL is http://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Talk:Dominique_Strauss-Kahn_sexual_assault_case&limit=50&action=history) I have no idea what causes this but I don't think it's possible that it's related to page hiding or oversight, because even then you'd at least see a line with the words crossed out. Soap 01:40, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
What browser and version are you using, Soap?  Chzz  ►  02:07, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
It happens on Chrome and IE, but not Firefox, when logged out. I dont think the page size should matter since it's just the history page that's being loaded.Soap 12:45, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Right - yes, I tried it, and I see. In ie, the "latest" entry is 02:59, 26 May 2011, in firefox it's 15:47, 31 May 2011. How odd.

If you are not too sure - or if someone does remove it - then discuss it on the article talk pages, which are, respectively, Talk:Alexandra Powers and Talk:Katharyn_Powers. See WP:BRD.
Just be extra-careful on any biography of a living person to ensure you cite a reliable source. That ew.com ref looks OK to me. If in doubt as to whether something is a good source, you can always ask on Misplaced Pages:Reliable sources/Noticeboard (shortcut, WP:RSN).
Because BLP's (bio's of living people) need extra care, it's worth reading WP:BLP too.  Chzz  ►  02:05, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
WP:BLPCAT says “Categories regarding religious beliefs … should not be used unless … the subject's beliefs … are relevant to their notable activities or public life.” Do you think her former Buddhism is relevant to her notable activities or public life? —teb728 t c 02:11, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
I would go with "No" for #1. WP:BLPCAT, which you've been referred to before, says that they should be in the religious category only if "...the subject has publicly self-identified with the belief or orientation in question; and the subject's beliefs or sexual orientation are relevant..." She claims to have been a Buddhist for six months. They don't self identify as that now and people experiment with religions throughout their lives. Dismas| 02:14, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
And I have removed the category. GB fan (talk) 02:37, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
That's WP:BRD in action, and absolutely fair enough. (But a quick comment on the talk would be nice, GB fan)  Chzz  ►  06:58, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

    Problem with box padding

    Hi,

On my user page, I'm getting extra left-padding in the box on the right. I'm not sure how to get rid of this. Does anybody know?

I created a simpler test case in my sandbox. Here is the code:

    {{Boxboxtop|About|backgroundcolor=lightblue}}
    {{Userboxtop|}}
    {{User en}}
    {{User Wikipedian for|year=2005|month=12|day=5}}
    {{Userboxbottom}}
    {{Boxboxbottom}}

The left margin is far bigger than the right margin. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Images in userspace

Per Misplaced Pages:NFCC#9. Why? Rcsprinter (talk) 10:21, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Because they are copyrighted so we just cant use them everywhere, when we use them in an article we use a non-free-use rationale we have to make a case why the copyrighted images should be used. The use in articles is restricted so we only use copyrighted images under certain conditions. On user pages and other non-article pages none of those conditions would every be satisfied because they would be used for decoration, hence the ban. MilborneOne (talk) 10:38, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
Try keying "userspace" into the "Search the archives" at Misplaced Pages talk:Non-free content, and you will find a selection of past discussions. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:41, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
I would explain it as a compromise between the point of view that a free encyclopdia should have no non-free content and the point of view that a quality encyclopedia needs non-free content. The compromise is that non-free content is permitted when the encyclopedia actually needs it (and it is permitted under fair use law). The encyclopedia doesn't need it except in articles. —teb728 t c 11:20, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

    Feedback - quote marks

Your articles frequently use punctuation marks outside quote marks. Punctuation marks always belong inside the quote marks, in English version anyway. Modern technology has diminished the use of proper language but if you have a choice to get it wrong or get it right, you should get it right. kcd1976 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.217.195.44 (talk) 10:40, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

See the Misplaced Pages style guide - "On Misplaced Pages, place all punctuation marks inside the quotation marks if they are part of the quoted material and outside if they are not". You are welcome to propose a change to the style guide, by posting at Misplaced Pages talk:Manual of Style, but I am sure the point has been discussed extensively over the years. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:45, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
No, they do not "belong inside". They belong outside. For reasons I cannot fathom, some Americans decided to adopt a silly rule. WP has chosen a more reasonable rule.--SPhilbrickT 12:20, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
It has to do with the practicalities of typesetting with actual type (as opposed to Linotype, etc.) Punctuation inside quotes was a little less likely to break off; or so I've been told. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:50, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
I've found that story in a comment on The Straight Dope too, but again with no references. It strikes me as complete nonsense: what is it about a full stop or comma that's going to break off, that isn't going to happen to the equally small quote mark? And what about the hugely more numerous cases when punctuation isn't associated with quote marks? Without a strong reference I have no hesitation in putting that story in the reject bin. --ColinFine (talk) 22:13, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Shifting existing article to create disambiguation page?

I have created a Misplaced Pages entry for "Drew Berry (animator)". A page for "Drew Berry" (a journalist) already exists. I think it would be appropriate for the page "Drew Berry" to become a disambiguation page rather than belonging to the journalist, especially as the first sentence of "Drew Berry" (the journalist) begins "Drew Berry is an Emmy Award-winning...", which is also true of "Drew Berry (animator)" who also has an Emmy- so may be confusing for people searching for the animator rather than the journalist.

What I'm hoping to do is to create

    • Drew Berry <-disambiguation page.
    • Drew Berry (animator)
    • Drew Berry (journalist)

    My questions are:

    • is it ok to shift the content as it stands from the current "Drew Berry" to a new page, "Drew Berry (journalist)" so "Drew Berry" can then be written as a disambiguation page?
    • if I do this, is there a way to locate the current[REDACTED] links to "Drew Berry" and redirect them to "Drew Berry (journalist)"? I am not intending to cause problems for Drew Berry (journalist); I just think there will be people searching for "Drew Berry (animator)" who could be confused between the two if they land on the journalist's page.

    Thanks Vanessa.

    Vsolomon (talk) 11:53, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Normally we don't create a disambiguation page for two articles. One article has a hatnote directing people to the other article. I have added a hat note on Drew Berry telling people if they are looking for the animator to go to Drew Berry (animator). Just as a side note the Drew Berry article need to be worked on. I don't think you could do it in a single step, but you could use to get a list of articles, create a page with links to them, and use 'related changes' for that - or use a watchlist; but you'd need to get a user account.  Chzz  ►  17:34, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

How can i turn the[REDACTED] background color into black?

turning background color into black makes it easier to read for many people.

also, computers save energy by displaying black background tone rather than white, if[REDACTED] did this, they would help the world save a lot of energy.

    one example for inspiration: blackle.com

A black background is very hard for most of us to read, and would not be appropriate for editing at all. Bielle (talk) 14:56, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
If you create an account and log in then you can select "Use a black background with green text on the Monobook skin" at Special:Preferences#preftab-9. It may give unfortunate colors for some things. The power reduction is generally for CRT monitors which are less used today. LCD monitors often use more power when black. See http://techlogg.com/2010/05/black-vs-white-screen-power-consumption-24-more-monitors-tested/17. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:15, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
Many browsers allow you to blackify yourself. For example, in Firefox, go to tools → options → content tab → colors → change the background to black and the text to whatever you'd like and then untick the option for "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selection above."--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:50, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Getting the runaround in Misplaced Pages

I thought this was solved long time ago. I am using an shared broadband connection and apparently someone under this single IP address is using Tor sometimes. I am not using Tor or any other anonymising service. I explained this to a friendly admin, and he set up an exemption from IP blocking for my account some time ago. And it worked fine then. (For me at en.wikipedia and de.wikipedia!)

But now suddenly I am blocked again because of Tor activity on the IP address I am using. This is annoying already, but it got totally mega annoying when I - again - followed all the good and nice explanations and recommendations that followed, cursing silently. I don't like being sent from pillar to post.

"You have been blocked because it has been detected that you are using Tor ... bla bla ... you need to request an account ..." - what? I have an account and I am logged in! - "... and then request block exemption." - I did that long time ago, see my talk page.

Well. So I went to Misplaced Pages:IP_block_exemption. Much text to read, then the useful hint: "A user affected by an IP block that is unrelated to their editing and that prevents them editing with a logged-in account. - How to request.": Misplaced Pages:APPEAL. "7. I want to edit Misplaced Pages, but I keep getting blocked because of others on the same network as me!" - not quite helpful - "Requesting to be unblocked" - okay. "Instructions for requesting an unblock will be placed on your talk page or in the block explanation." - no it wasn't or it was too well hidden for me to see it. - "The preferred way to appeal a block is to use the {{{unblock}}} template, but you can also contact the blocking administrator or appeal by email." - okay let's see the unblock template - "The following should be placed on your talk page:" - well I would like to, but when trying to edit my own talk page it says: "You have been blocked because it has been detected that you are using Tor ..." - back to the beginning!

Well, I still might try to contact an administrator. Maybe the friendly one who created the block exemption before. But guess what - "You have been blocked because it has been detected that you are using Tor ..." - arghh!

Other ways to get help, the IRC chat maybe? No of course not. "Joining chat room... You are banned from this server - Due to abuse we currently accept tor connections via our tor-sasl service only ..." - sigh. This "tor-sasl" service is some service within tor, but since I am not using tor (and neither have a registered account at freenode) I can not use that. The webchat? - "Your reported IP is banned".

This is so frustrating. All that fuss just because I wanted to correct a tiny error on a Misplaced Pages page.

I wish I knew a solution for these problems. Do I actually need to appeal the block again, or is it some kind of error in MediaWiki? Should I send an Email as described in Misplaced Pages:Guide_to_appealing_blocks (one further page about the same topic), or try using the template?

how to locate an image in wiki commons

just a few hours ago I successfully (I thought) entered an image in Wiki Commons (I think). It was a random packing of 1000 triangles in a rectangle. Now I wanted to see if it is still there. It does not show up in user's (mine) contributions, and it does not show up when I place a few key words in SEARCH. I am puzzled... Lsalgo (talk) 17:18, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

You have to be at Commons to see contributions there: commons:Special:Contributions/Lsalgo. You could also click "Global contributions" at the bottom of Special:Contributions/Lsalgo. It takes some time (maybe a day) for the search function to index edits, so you cannot search it yet. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:37, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

    What counts as an edit?

I think you are misreading what it says at , it doesn't say you only have 80 edits it says you have 80 edits prior to 1 January 2011. It depends on the licensing given on the original source of the picture, the licensing given on the facebook page for the picture and what article the picture will be used on. If the picture is of a living person, then the picture must be released under a compatible free license. If the image is of a dead person or an object it might be appropriate if there is no free image that could be used in its place. We would need more info to give a definitive answer. GB fan (talk) 21:41, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

PLEASE NOTE: I hope this is not considered "bumping", as I never really got a response to this that solved the matter.

I recently made some changes to my preferences and have discovered that when I click on a picture it no longer goes to the page containing the picture and its related information. Now it jumps to a page simply displaying the picture alone. I've reset my preferences, but clicking on pictures still exhibits this behavior. How can I correct this so that I can see the details page? Siouxdax (talk) 11:03, 26 May 2011 (UTC) I don't know a preference which would do this. What happens if you click the example image to the right? What is the url in your browser? For me it is http://en.wikipedia.org/File:Example.jpg. If I then click on the image on that page, I go to http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a9/Example.jpg which displays the image alone. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:41, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

When I clicked on the picture you provided, it went to the page showing the details about the image, but a few seconds later it jumped to a page showing only the picture. Prior to this issue I did make some changes to my preferences, but I can't find anything related to that. Anyone else have any input on this? Siouxdax (talk) 17:10, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

I see you copied the discussion at Misplaced Pages:Help desk/Archives/2011 May 26#Clicking on pictures jumps to fullscreen. You didn't answer what the url was for you. The url is the web address usually starting http:// you should see in the browser address bar when you view a page. Does the same happen if you are logged out? This would indicate it's unrelated to your Misplaced Pages preferences. I wonder whether a problem with your mouse or software can cause your browser to think you have clicked twice when you click once. Have you seen signs of this in other situations? Thanks. The URL http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a9/Example.jpg is the original 275x297 image and the url shouldn't be anywhere in the source of this page (except where we mention in it our posts). The image on this page is a reduced 200x216 version stored at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a9/Example.jpg/200px-Example.jpg. Which browser do you have? Try to clear your entire cache. Can you see the url the image here should link to without clicking to go there, for example by right-clicking on the image and choose copy url? If you click the image and get to http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a9/Example.jpg then does the browser back button go to the image page or this help desk? What happens if you click http://en.wikipedia.org/File:Example.jpg which is the url for the image page? PrimeHunter (talk) 12:28, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

CAUSE FOUND! ISSUE RESOLVED! It turns out that when on another website I had the same behavior when clicking an image. I figured it had to be my browser, maybe an add-on, but it turned out to be a Greasemonkey script called "Just Show Image 2". Its purpose? To do what it did. Whew. Well, at least it did exactly what it said on the tin. PrimeHunter, thank you so very much for your effort and guidance. It's very much appreciated. 68.0.65.250 (talk) 21:34, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

    Film References

Ygrec23 (talk) 23:01, 30 May 2011 (UTC) I made a very minor revision to the article on "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" (a famous guitar composition by Francisco Tàrrega) adding a reference to the soundtrack of René Clément's Forbidden Games (as played by Narciso Yepes). There are Misplaced Pages articles on all of René Clément, Forbidden Games and Narciso Yepes. The links to René Clément and Narciso Yepes worked fine. But the link to Forbidden Games simply won't turn blue. I've made extra sure that the formatting of the reference is exactly like all other movie name formatting and that the title is exactly the same as the title of the Misplaced Pages article. I've been over it twenty times and though I must have made some mistake I can't for the life of me figure out what correction to make. Help would be appreciated. Here it is:

René Clément's Forbidden Games (as played by Narciso Yepes),

    Ygrec23 (talk) 23:01, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

The article name is Forbidden Games and should be linked like that and not Forbidden Games (film). The "(film)" part in some article names is only there to disambiguate it from other articles with a similar name. For example, The Killing Fields is about the actual sites in Cambodia, so the film article is called The Killing Fields (film). PrimeHunter (talk) 23:11, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

I edited the page Damascus, and also justified my edit with a contribution on the discussion page. I went back to the discussion page to see if anyone had responded, but then my contribution did not appear. I looked at the edit history and it read to me like it should appear, as I only edited once and no one edited after me. When I logged in, then what I wrote did appear. When I logged out again, it disappeared once more. What could cause this? How do I copy images from Misplaced Pages in other languages or alphabets into English Misplaced Pages?

I am trying to add more images to the Palestine Railways article. The Hebrew counterpart of the article has several photographs that I would like to use. I found the image file names, copied and pasted them into the English article but all I got was a redlink. I searched Wikimedia for the file names but they didn't appear. I've downloaded the images and I could upload them to Wikimedia, but I don't read Hebrew so I can't read which copyright they are under. How can I add these images to the article? The photographs are:

I've had similar problems when finding photos. For example, Ukranian Misplaced Pages has a photo of the front of Ramses railway station in Cairo but my attempt to copy it into Misplaced Pages's English Egyptian National Railways and Ramses Station articles achieved only a redlink:

Thanks. Motacilla (talk) 02:32, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

This is File:Biandintz eta zaldiak - modified2.jpg, which is on Commons.
    Hi.
File:PalestineRailwaysNG1946ca1.jpg (for example) is stored on hewiki; so here, on enwiki, it's a red link. If I put ] it works - he:File:PalestineRailwaysNG1946ca1.jpg. Therefore, it can only be used on hewiki.
(Incidentally, it doesn't matter if I put "File:" (in English) or "קובץ:" (the Hebrew for 'file') - ] works just the same, he:קובץ:PalestineRailwaysNG1946ca1.jpg)
To use it on enwiki, it would have to be uploaded to either Commons (probably best), or enwiki.
If a file is on Commons, it can be used on any of the Wikimedia sister projects - that is, it could be used on English Misplaced Pages, German Misplaced Pages, Hebrew Misplaced Pages, Wikibooks, Wikinews, etc. etc.
If a file is uploaded to a 'local wiki' (such as enwiki or hewiki) it can only be used on that one.
The syntax, in either case, is identical. For example, here, I've put a picture of a horsie. That file is actually stored on Commons. If you go to it from 'here' on English Misplaced Pages - ie File:Biandintz eta zaldiak - modified2.jpg - you'll notice it says, "This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons. Information from its description page there is shown below. " - and if you follow the link, you get to the real page, Commons:File:Biandintz eta zaldiak - modified2.jpg.
So - to cut to the chase - if you want to use those pics, you probably should download them (to your own computer), and then upload them to Commons, yourself. As long as the licences are OK, and you say where it comes from, that'll be fine.
    I hope that makes sense.
And of course, always - if you need more help, just ask.  Chzz  ►  03:06, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
There are also tools that will pull it from any given language's Misplaced Pages to Commons and I think there was one where you can pull from one language's project to another. Wikilinking to a specific citation needed tag in an article

I whave begun drafting a new cleanup template in my userspace at User:Toshio Yamaguchi/Template:Refnumimprove. Is it possible in the place where it says 1, 2, 3, 4 have a sequence of numbers up to the number of citation needed tags in the article? Furthermore is it possible to link each number to the corresponding citation needed tag?

In order to better explain what I mean, lets consider the following example:

Suppose we have an article containing four citation needed tags. I want to make the template, such that the list of numbers (like 1, 2, 3, 4) is automatically generated corresponding to the total number of citation needed tags in the article. Then, when I would for example click on 3, it would automatically take me to the third citation needed tag in the article (in the same way that one is taken to the third reference, when one clicks on the footnote numbered 3).

Is this possible? Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 09:22, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

I will try to create a second template that creates a list of the citation needed tags in the article and transcludes them into the first template. I am not yet even sure if this is possible at all. I think I will have to do some research. :) Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 14:28, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

I want to create a second template at User:Toshio Yamaguchi/Template:Cnlist that would be transcluded into User:Toshio Yamaguchi/Template:Refnumimprove and display links to the citation needed tags numbered from 1 to n in a vertical row (maybe with a parameter to break the row after ? entries). Is that possible? Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 14:47, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Hmm. I don't think this is possible. The {{Citation needed}} template doesn't currently put out an anchor that your template could jump to; and I don't see how it could be modified to put out different anchors each time it is used on a page, which is what you'd need. As you point out, the <ref>/<references> system does manage this trick, but that's because it is built in to the MediaWiki software itself. You could perhaps post at Village pump (technical) in case I'm wrong. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:59, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
I believe Misplaced Pages's footnote machinery is in mw:Extension:Cite. Where do you want "the list of numbers" to appear? In the article that contains the {{Citation needed}} templates? Or on some other page? I don't understand the advantage of what you propose. {{Citation needed}} already categorizes its transcluding articles into Category:Articles with unsourced statements. It's easy enough to browse to such an article, then press Ctrl+F or +F to search the articles for instances of "citation needed". It seems to me that we really need better tools for finding reliable sources and then formatting them into footnote citations. Preferably with an automatic method to archive each source with WebCite or a similar tool. Having new ways to rearrange the existing backlog of citations needed wouldn't seem to address the limiting step, which is to find sources and format citations of them. --Teratornis (talk) 19:44, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
A mere list of numbers does not convey useful information about the actual statements that need citations. It could be more useful to arrange all unsourced statements on Misplaced Pages into a taxonomy by subject, which might allow people who have specialized knowledge of the relevant literature to more readily home in on the subset of unsourced statements for which they are able to find sources. For example, someone who knows about aircraft carriers might find a list of all our unsourced statements about aircraft carriers to be a target rich environment. Of course building and maintaining such a taxonomy would be about as difficult and complex as maintaining our categories for articles. --Teratornis (talk) 19:53, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

    Opening sentences

    Sample opening sentences:

OK so far. However, until today:

Funnily enough, I'd always thought that anyone capable of reading a sentence in English would realize that Armenian-Japanese relations were relations, presumably foreign rather than (say) conjugal, between Armenia and Japan (even if they confused Armenia with Albania or Japan with Saipan).

    So I cut it.

But then the cynic in me thought that any prose as stupefyingly superfluous as this must have been prompted by WP's beloved Manual of Style. And so I took a quick look at the MoS's top page, and neither found it nor found any promising link.

Did I do something very naughty? Are there thought to be a non-negligible number of eager if underinformed readers who might suppose that Armenian-Japanese relations were a Japanese yōkai (whether or not most common in the Kōshinetsu region), or perhaps a kind of cheese?

(I was going to post this at the talk page of WP:MOS, but it told me to post a question such as this here instead.) -- Hoary (talk) 09:42, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

No, not naughty. See WP:BEGINNING; point #2 seems to cover it, if the article title is merely descriptive the title does not need to appear verbatim . It's fine. And even if MOS said 'no', it's just a guideline. If anyone objects, they can change it, and then you could discuss it on Talk:Armenia–Japan relations. But unless/until anyone shouts, go for it. Chzz  ►  10:07, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
Oh, right, there it was all along, and it said the reverse of what I'd guessed. My opinion of MOS has jumped up several notches. And thank you, Chzz.
Etc etc. Somebody seems to like adding this stuff. -- Hoary (talk) 11:56, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
Mmm, there was Misplaced Pages:WikiProject International relations/Bilateral relations task force; see e.g. AN Proposed standstill agreement on Bilateral Relations articles and "X-Y" relations stubs (and follow your nose to more discussions).  Chzz  ►  17:23, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
The boilerplate introduction could provide some value if it had a link on foreign relations, which has a more specific meaning than the generic "relations". Also it can be useful to state the country names explicitly and link them, for example when the adjectival form of a country name in the title might be unfamiliar to the reader. I don't think the boilerplate introduction is necessarily obvious to everyone. Not everyone who reads Misplaced Pages is an expert in all the topics they read about. And even if the definition seems obvious and redundant, it has the benefit of ruling out less obvious possibilities. Misplaced Pages readers are incredibly diverse - as you can see by reading the Help desk questions over a few weeks, people come to Misplaced Pages with all sorts of peculiar ideas. For example, we get some questions from readers who seem to mistake Misplaced Pages as being affiliated with the subjects of our articles. This suggests we can never spell things out too plainly. --Teratornis (talk) 19:24, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
I think you have a point, but although people do indeed have strange ideas about Misplaced Pages they are generally able to link adjectives with names. Let's imagine that there were an article on "Dutch–Irish relations" (even though such an article would I think be titled differently); this could start "Foreign relations between the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland started shortly after the formation of the Republic and have blah blah". But perhaps we should move this potentially useful discussion elsewhere, as none of us is now asking for help. Though I don't know where would be best. -- Hoary (talk) 00:54, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

However, having started the suggested WP:wizard my proposal does appear to fall into neologism category - not too sure. Emazoff (talk) 14:04, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

See WP:NEOLOGISM, WP:RS, WP:V, and WP:NOR. Misplaced Pages articles are not supposed to contain any original ideas. They should only contain material that has already been published elsewhere in reliable sources. Therefore the most important ingredient for a new article is a list of published sources from which you can draw material, and then cite with footnotes. Articles with few or no sources may fail to demonstrate the notability of their subjects, and may be deleted - this is a very common mistake by new Misplaced Pages editors, since the (delayed) enforcement is by the user community rather than embedded in Misplaced Pages's software. (I.e., there is nothing to stop people from editing away for hours on end with no idea that everything depends on sources.) If you have original ideas you want to write about, see the alternative outlets. --Teratornis (talk) 19:06, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

List of dubstep musicians - columns

    Resolved

I need a hand with List of dubstep musicians. I'm trying to break the list into two columns, but modifying the formatting used in List of post-rock bands causes some rather ugly horizontal lines to appear too. Any hints? Cheers, doomgaze (talk) 12:50, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Is this due to the kind of CompactTOC used? Those articles are using different ones: CompactTOC2 and CompactTOC8. Rmhermen (talk) 12:55, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi. Your external link addition was blocked because your username is the same as the web address that you were trying to link to (see the filter log here). However, the link that you are trying to add also does not comply with our guidelines on external links, in particular Misplaced Pages strongly discourages links to individual web pages that primarily exist to sell products or services, links to sites that require payment or registration to view the relevant content, and links mainly intended to promote a website. Please also read our username policy as having a username that is the same as the name of a website could lead to your account being blocked. —Jeremy (talk) 22:49, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

    IHOP Founders

Any replies to your post will appear right here and you should respond back right here. In order to provide proof, you need to cite at least one reliable source that verifies the information. The way to cite a source is to place in the text a footnote stating where the published information comes from (it must be a published source). There's lost of information on how to do this at the cite link I just provided, but a simple example would be:
NAME was one of five founders....<ref>"Title of newspaper article." ''The New York Times'': p. 8. January 5, 1986.</ref> which will format like this:
NAME was one of five founders... The footnote will appear at the bottom of the article and will look like this:
"Title of newspaper article". The New York Times. January 5, 1986. p. 8.
The Los Angeles Times articles here look promising, though they are unfortunately behind a pay wall.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:05, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
According to this Peter Marsoobian developed IHOP’s proprietary pancake batter. I’m not sure that’s the same as being a founder. —teb728 t c 00:50, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

When is a DAB not a DAB? Russian Republic

I have edited WP for a while but had quite a wikibreak and can't remember where to ask. A page I found at random, Russian Republic, seems to me little more than what should be a DAB (Disambiguation Page). Is there a page where I should submit for a request for DAB? Or should I just mark it DAB anyway? Since it seems to me that anyone likely to search for Russian Republic does not want to know about the short-lived etc. but about one of the topics under it, i.e. it is in essence a DAB.

(e/c x2) In the page you'll see the code "{{/Article alerts}}" When something is linked to with brackets or called with curly braces as /something, the "/" automatically links or calls the name of the page it's on. So {{/Article alerts}} on this page, for example, would result in the code calling Misplaced Pages:Help desk/Article alerts.
