Martin has worked with the orchestras of Edmonton, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay; the Cadaques Orchestra in Barcelona, Spain; and the Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali in ]. Most recently, in 2010 Martin stepped in on short notice to conduct the Dalhousie University Symphony Orchestra in their annual Concert Night performance, conducting several excerpts of classical, operatic, and contemporary repertoire. Martin MacDonald (born June 14, 1977) is an award-winning Canadian conductor.
Symphony Nova Scotia
Martin has served as Resident Conductor of Symphony Nova Scotia since 2008, a position supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. During the past two seasons he has conducted over seventy performances, led the orchestra on tour, covered all concerts and repertoire, and several of his performances have been recorded and broadcast nationally on CBC Concerts on Demand. His upcoming third season sees an increased performance schedule of classical, ballet, pops, and education programs including his debut on the flagship Celebrity series.
In 2010, Martin was awarded the Jean-Marie Beaudet Award in Orchestral Conducting, awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts for his work with Symphony Nova Scotia.
National Academy Orchestra of Canada
Martin served as Associate Conductor of the National Academy Orchestra of Canada (based in Hamilton, Ontario), Boris Brott, Artistic Director for three seasons. Some memorable performances with the NAO included Debussy's La Mer, Beethoven's Third, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Symphonies, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, and Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F with pianist Stewart Goodyear – Martin conducted on every performance in repertoire ranging from classical, ballet, opera, pops, education, and contemporary repertoire including world premieres of some works. In 2009, Martin returned to the NAO to guest conduct two different programs.
