Trayvon Martin was an unarmed black teenager shot and killed by George Zimmerman on February 26, 2012.

Shooting

According to his family, Trayvon had left his father's girlfriend's home in a mostly white gated community in Sanford, Florida to go to a nearby convenience store to buy some candy. While returning, Trayvon was seen by George Zimmerman, who called 911 and reported him for being suspicious and walking slowly in the rain, with his hood up. He was told by dispatch to not take any action, and that police were on the way. Zimmerman said on the call "those assholes always get away" By the time the police arrived Martin was already dead with a gunshot wound in the chest. Zimmerman claimed self defense. Zimmerman, who has a history of "aggressive tactics" in the past, has not been charged with any crime.
