    Cite journal, pmc parameter

Suddenly the pmc param in cite journal does not display and link. This is new, I believe since the pmid shows a lock symbol. Did you now overengineer it? no pmc limits the utility of the pmid, pmc system very much. pls. take a look. 70.137.146.3 (talk) 01:02, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

    Strange password problem

Hi there - I have a rather odd password problem in that I am logged in through my home PC but I don't know my password. I had my passwords stored in KeePass, but either I have forgotten my Keepass master password or my Keepass key file is corrupt. In other words, I am having to go through all of my online accounts and manually recover the passwords. I don't have my email account associated with my Wiki account. Is there anything that I can do? If I don't either recover the password here or somehow get my email address added to my wiki ID, I won't be able to use the account again after the next time I clear my browser history. Help? ♣♦ SmartGuy ♥♠ (talk) 02:07, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Special:Preferences. Email options are at the bottom of the page. - Purplewowies (talk) 03:21, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, but that is asking for my current password to confirm the change. Like I said, I have no idea what the current password is. It is stored in a password database to which I have lost access. ♣♦ SmartGuy ♥♠ (talk) 03:29, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
You are up against security measures to prevent somebody from taking over your account if they get access to a computer where you are logged in but they don't know your password. I don't know a solution but you could start by using {{User committed identity}} while you are still logged in. Developers can set an email address but I don't know under which circumstances they will do it. PrimeHunter (talk) 05:55, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
    Thanks! I'll give that a try. ♣♦ SmartGuy ♥♠ (talk) 10:10, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi again PrimeHunter and friends - I have the {{User committed identity}} all set up. How do I go about contacting a developer to see if they will set the appropriate email? ♣♦ SmartGuy ♥♠ (talk) 13:59, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

I don't know anything about procedures or requirements. I got no reply at Misplaced Pages:Village pump (technical)/Archive 82#Retrieval of passwords/committed identity. meta:Privacy policy says: "Users whose accounts do not have a valid email address will not be able to reset their password if it is lost. In such a situation, however, users may be able to contact one of the Wikimedia server administrators to enter a new e-mail address." Perhaps you should mention this when you contact somebody. See meta:System administrators. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:25, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Cool beans. I'll try that. Thanks.

PrimeHunter and friends - I have not yet tried to contact an admin at meta:System administrators since I have been slammed busy IRL the past few days, but I plan to do so soon. I am posting this reply from a different computer (turns out I am still logged in at work as well as on my home PC) to show further that I am actually me and not somebody else! ♣♦ SmartGuy ♥♠ (talk) 12:44, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

    Erdos-Bacon number

I seem to have disappeared completely from the discussion of Erdos-Bacon numbers. I have an Erdos-Bacon number of four! I used to be there, but have been discarded. Why?????

My Erdos number is 2, through J. Loxton and through M.V. Subbarao, and my Bacon number is 2. I was in the movie The Bank, with Anthony Lapaglia, who was in a movie with Kevin Bacon.

I have left a message at the talk page of the user who removed the material, informing them of this thread. The edit which removed the material was this one The edit summary, "fails verification by source" refers to the verification policy, and is stating that the sources cited to verify the text, failed to do so.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:30, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
It was removed because it was not properly sourced. Specifically, the Bacon number is not sourced. Claiming to appear as an "extra" requires reliable sourcing. I have appeared as an extra in several films, but I can't prove it so I don't have a reliably sourced Bacon number. The user should read WP:RS. The article has a long history of lots of people trying to add themselves because they claim to have been an extra in a film, but rarely is it sourced. Secondarily, since the user acknowledges that he is trying to add himself, WP:COI should be read. 71.50.99.0 (talk) 13:09, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

    wikipedia color issue in chrome

I have recently started facing an awkward problem with[REDACTED] CSS. The articles have started appearing in black font over blue background and has become quite difficult to read. Getting a response from Wikimedia Permissions

Dear Help Desk- I have worked long and hard on a major scientific article in my Sandbox: Isothermal Microcalorimetry (IMC) It is a parallel to existing articles on Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC).

I have included 7 figures in my article. One is a photo I took myself, 3 are from journal publications I co-authored, 2 are from papers by others, and one is from product literature. Wikimedia Permissions have flagged 3 of my figures. I have sent them several emails relaying permissions I received by email. I also sent them an email 6 days ago (forwarded again today) summarizing that I have the needed permissions. No response so far.

I would appreciate any help in getting Permissions to release my figures so I can submit my article to the Wikpedia editors. Many thanks, DanDaniels DanDaniels (talk) 09:19, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

The only advice is to please be patient. The OTRS permissions folks are all volunteers like the rest of us, and there is always a backlog.--ukexpat (talk) 13:10, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
I was unhappy with how long it was taking for OTRS to process images - there is a backlog stretching well over a month, and I knew some of my requests have taken a long time to process, so I volunteered to help out.
I'm only on my third day, so still learning the ropes.
In a coincidence, I started working on your requests earlier this morning. They are unnecessarily complicated due to no fault of your own. I have straightened out a number of issues, added permission to several images, but have some emails out to you on some open issues.
I've also offered to help you with your article.
Check your email for some messages from me, and I hope we can get the remaining issues resolved so you can work on the article.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 17:14, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Showing a picture to left of an infobox

I wanted to add a picture to the Past Chairs section of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus article, because there is a lot of empty, white space going a-begging there. However, the presence of the {{Hispanic and Latino Americans}} template creates a long infobox running down the right of the page, and this forced the picture I added to display well below the Past Chairs section, and screwed up the layout of the article. I experimented with the {{stack}} template but it didn't help. How can I make this work? — O'Dea (talk) 11:31, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Whitespace and placement of elements can be browser dependant. Is what you want? PrimeHunter (talk) 12:00, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
No. In that edit you ask about, the large photograph appears immediately below the infobox instead of above in the Past Chairs section, in both Firefox and Internet Explorer. I wanted the picture to appear in the ample space to the right of the list of names, and left of the long infobox. I've noticed this before, that where an infobox exists, all images are forced to appear below it, and only text can appear to the left of an infobox. Your edit produced the same result as my earlier attempts, in both browsers. — O'Dea (talk) 15:24, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
This is what I want — but this is what I get. — O'Dea (talk) 15:56, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
What about forcing a left alignment on it? (I personally don't like that stylistically in that location, but...) - Purplewowies (talk) 15:35, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
I want it right aligned, alongside the infobox, not left of the bullet list, like this. — O'Dea (talk) 15:56, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

So, is it impossible to display an image left of an infobox? — O'Dea (talk) 00:58, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Please first check that you are at the right website - this is the Help desk for Misplaced Pages, the online encyclopedia. It is not a social networking site, and it would, I think, be unusual for inappropriate messages to be sent back and forth here. If the problem is occurring at Misplaced Pages then the page you need is Misplaced Pages:Child protection. It includes an email address to which you may send the details - at minimum, the names or URLs of the pages where this is happening. Please don't post any confidential details on this help desk page. -- John of Reading (talk) 14:28, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

'Show' button in a collapsible template obscuring some words

I created User:Toshio Yamaguchi/Template:Unsolved. How can I prevent the Show button from obscuring part of the wikilink, ie how can I force the Show button to appear behind the last word of the wikilink? See my sandbox for the described unwanted effect. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 14:30, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

I copied this to my userspace so I could test with wild abandon. How does User:Purplewowies/testing template/tries look to you? The first is a transclusion of your template page; the second is a transclusion of User:Purplewowies/testing template. I messed with the width, and it seems that the magic number is 350px -ish (though that's slightly bigger) if you want it left aligned. The magic number if you want to keep it centered is about 375px. - Purplewowies (talk) 16:05, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
The second one looks good. Perhaps I should change the template and base the template on something like Template:Navbox instead so that it fills the entire horizontal length of the bottom of the page. That would avoid the problem entirely. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 16:41, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

    Steyr GB

    Steyr GB (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

My father is the founder of L.E.S. in Skokie, IL. In the "Development" section of this article, it says Steyr took legal action to stop production. This is false, and is pure speculation on the part of gun historians. What really happened was that Steyr had a contract with L.E.S. that if L.E.S. used Steyr's logo and marketing material in regards to the Pi-18, L.E.S. would receive financial compensation. When that compensation never came and Steyr refused to comply with their contract, L.E.S. stopped using the Steyr logo and began marketing their gun as the Rogak P18. Steyr took their company to federal court with Judge Julius Hoffman presiding. Because Steyr had violated the terms of their contract, they ended up dropping the suit. The marketing of the Rogak P18 was NOT in response to a lawsuit, and it was NOT because of copyright infringement, as this article implies. In fact almost the opposite was true. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Osteoblastic (talkcontribs) 15:42, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Even if the information is true, it cannot be verifiable because you have not provided any sources. It seems like you have a conflict of interest here. AndieM (Am I behaving?) 16:37, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
If information in the article is not supported by reliable sources, anybody may remove it; though in view of your conflict of interest, it would be better for you to explain on the article's Talk page what you would like removed. In order to add alternative information, you need to find reliable sources that support the information. (And if reliable sources disagree, the article should present both sides). --ColinFine (talk) 16:55, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

    Looking for Edits

Hi-there. I've been trying to find someone to edit a draft of the Bloomberg Television article (I have posted on the WP:Television, WP:Journalism etc as well as the current article's talk page without any response). The current article is generally disorganized and lacks citations. I've tried to clean it up and give better sourcing. Would someone mind taking a look at it? I do some work for Bloomberg L.P. and don't want my conflict of interest to interfere with Wiki guidelines. If you read it over and find the changes suitable, would you also submit the edits to the current article? Version mismatch on Collections extension

Back on April 25, someone reported a problem with the Collections extension throwing a version missmatch error and preventing display of the desired book. See here. We are getting the same problem across multiple browsers and machines. A Google search finds this error coming up in developers forums over the last year or two. Any thoughts or recommendations beyond the previously supplied "clear your history" suggestion? 205.254.147.8 (talk) 19:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

There are unfortunately problems in some cases and I don't have a good solution. Perhaps one of the articles in the book contains incompatible code, and the book may work if that article is omitted. Will you create an account at Special:UserLogin/signup and post the username here? Then I or another administrator can confirm the account so it becomes able to save books. If you save the book then others can investigate it. Saving a book is nearly always possible even if the book cannot be generated. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:18, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Citing primary sources via secondary sources

Hi, folks. I have a vague recollection of once reading a guideline about this, but I cannot find it. What is the protocol for citing a secondary source ('Jones') for an idea that has merely been borrowed from and referenced to a reliable primary source ('Smith')? (e.g., 'Smith said in his 2005 essay that the Sun is big.' --Jones) Ideally I would cite Smith's article, but what if Smith published on a website that is now defunct and has no archive? Can I cite Jones' characterization of Smith? NTox · talk 03:57, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Would WP:PRIMARY help? I'm not sure if that addresses exactly what you're looking for, but it's just my try. AndieM (Am I behaving?) 07:19, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
The guideline you're thinking of is probably WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT. Deor (talk) 14:46, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. That's a good one, but not quite it. I'm wondering what to do when the reliable primary source has gone defunct, but the information still exists in the secondary source. NTox · talk 19:01, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
It is general scholarly practice to cite a primary source that is quoted or summarized in a secondary source, if the scholar cannot obtain access to the primary source. Also, even if the secondary source does not integrate the primary source into its work, the mere fact that the secondary source decided the primary source was worth mentioning may be significant. Karla Turner

The article I want help with is http://en.wikipedia.org/Dr._Karla_Turner

I just added that article. I copied and pasted it from the article posted at http://www.thefullwiki.org/Karla_Turner

That article (from the fullwiki) gives the following reference: ""

Therefore it seems that this article was originally posted on Misplaced Pages and was deleted. Is this true?

In any case, Why did Misplaced Pages have no article about Karla Turner -- such a famous writer? Was there previously ANY article on Karla Turner that was deleted? If there was an article before, is it possible someone deleted it though the desire to censor the UFO work she did?

CLARIFICATION: I have just put that article on Misplaced Pages with the understanding that it was here (on Misplaced Pages) before and was deleted. Nevertheless, in the "talk" section I can see this:

"A tag has been placed on Dr. Karla Turner requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement..."

This is not related to source code. An example would be inline formatting (in normal text) of the name of a checkbox in a Windows program (whether or not this should be monospaced is another matter). --Mortense (talk) 15:17, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

    open search malfunction

To whom it may concern, Why can't I do an open search on my mobile phone? Whenever I write in a word that does not already contain an article and it automatically takes me to me to a page with the closest match. Ex. If I type he it takes me to hertz every time or even worse when it cannot find a match it leaves me repeatley hitting the search button to no avail. I thought perhaps it was my phone but this only happens on your website. It is extremely annoying, hope to hear back . The Cite option has disappeared from the RH side of the toolbar

Thanks, but that doesn't work - tried clearing the cache, tried a McAfee "deep-clean", tried a re-boot, tried turning the settings in My Prefernces off and back on again .... any other ideas? - Arjayay (talk) 14:36, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Does the toolbar look like the second row in the table at Misplaced Pages:RefToolbar 2.0#Troubleshooting, or like the third row but without "Cite" at the end? What happens if you log out? The Cite option should also be present at the end for logged out users. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:01, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes - that's my normal toolbar - but it usually has the "Cite" at the end
I tried logging out but it made no difference, so I cleared my cache as well, but it still made no difference
As stated above this is with both boxes ticked under "My preferences", so I tried all the combinations :-
    * Both off gives the long string of buttons (no drop downs) but the Cite button doesn't work
    * First off, Second ticked, gives the long string of buttons (no drop downs) but the Cite button leads to the pop-up "Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page ..."
    * First ticked, Second off, gives the "Advanced" options permanently on display. "Advanced" can't be cancelled and the standard options (bold etc.) do not work
Any other ideas? - Arjayay (talk) 17:53, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
I'm unsure from your "Yes" whether you see the second row in the table at Misplaced Pages:RefToolbar 2.0#Troubleshooting, or the third row but without "Cite" at the end. Do you see the third row without "Cite" and also without the {{}} icon in the middle? Have you followed the full procedure under "To completely clear the cache" at Misplaced Pages:Bypass your cache#Internet Explorer? Can you try another browser or computer? There might be a JavaScript problem if it doesn't work when the cache is completely cleared and you are logged out. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:17, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Stand-alone list vs Article with embedded list?

Hello. I'm creating on my userspace an article about all the coaches of an association football club. It started out as a table-formatted list, but then I decided to add a "history" section, which got quite extended so I even had to divide it in smaller sub-sections. My question is if I can consider it as a stand-alone list with a particularly big prose section or if it's an article with a long embedded list? I'm asking this because when I put this on the mainspace, I'd like to know how to better name it: List of X coaches (as in a list) or Coaches of X (as in an article). Thanks in advance for your help! Parutakupiu (talk) 16:30, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

If there is substantial text, I'd say Coaches of X F.C. makes more sense. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:41, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Kyle — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kylebanks (talkcontribs) 16:42, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

We have no facility for saving any searches you may have done. This is more a function of your search engine; Misplaced Pages's own internal search engine is pretty barebones. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:18, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
I don't know if this is what you want, but if you want to have a link to a specific search (for example on your userpage), you can put the following url there
    http://en.wikipedia.org/search/?search=word1+word2+word3&title=Special%3ASearch
where you would replace word1, word2 and word3 with your search terms. For example, if you want to have a link to a search for water tree (this is just a made up example), you would put
    http://en.wikipedia.org/search/?search=water+tree&title=Special%3ASearch
on a page (note the words water and tree inside the URL). Please be aware however that this can yield different results each time you click on the link (for example if new articles have been created since the last time you clicked on the link and these articles are reckognized by Wikipedias search engine in the same search).
Apart from that I am with Orange Mike. Misplaced Pages's search engine doesn't contain any mechanism for remembering or saving any searches. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 17:50, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Rio Pardo de Minas: a really empty place

I was wandering around in my normal chaotic fashion and noticed that the population density of Rio Pardo de Minas didn't agree with the given area and population. I went to the Portuguese article to see what it said. Its infobox states it has 35,000 inhabitants in 3118 km, which according to its calculations, works out to 0.01 person per km, just a leeetle bit low. I tried editing it, but couldn't find it. It appears to be something the template calculates. Could somebody give the Portuguese a heads up? Clarityfiend (talk) 21:41, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

I have fixed it in by changing 35.000 to 35000. I think 35.000 is a valid way to write 35000 in Portuguese (see decimal mark) but the software interpreted it as 35 when the population density was calculated. When it rendered as 35,000 before my edit, this meant 35 in Portuguese notation. The problem was introduced in . PrimeHunter (talk) 00:27, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse

The title of this institution is incorrect. CASA Columbia is NOT the Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. It is the NATIONAL Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. The Misplaced Pages page of founder Joseph Califano explicitly states this fact and " The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University" is hyperlinked. But when that page is pulled up, it switches to the wrong title. Can the title of the CASA Columbia page be corrected?

    Numbered lists without the indent

This is nit-picking, but I'd like to get it right. I want to make a numbered list in a vertical navbox. The problem with Mediawiki's numbers lists (and HTML's) is that they add too much indent for the small space. I noticed that Mediawiki uses less indent for bulleted lists than numbered list; is there a way to make numbered list only as indented as bulleted lists? I tried typing the actual numbers and using line breaks, but the single-digits won't align with the double-digits. I tried putting the numbers in their own column in a table and making that column align=right, but then I can't have a sub-list within one of the items in the list. Is there another option that I havn't thought of? —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 22:01, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

    Inaccessible article

I'm trying to view the article Comparison of e-book readers. Every time I attempt to go to that article, my browser hangs and I have to end the process with the Task Master. This has been going on for 24 hours, both with and without an immediate reboot. So far as I can determine, I can access all other articles.

First, can someone click on the comparison link above and tell me if the trouble is in my system or is this a problem with Misplaced Pages and/or the article itself? If it is my system, can anyone possibly tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm running IE 8.0.6001.18702 on Windows XP-HE 5.1, SP3. I have 784,384 KB of memory. The excessively large tables employing a multitude of colors might be to blame, but that's just a guess because the page doesn't cause me problems on XP with the same version of IE8 with 2.16 GB of RAM (technically 4, but 2.16 is as much as XP can see). - Purplewowies (talk) 00:41, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
It works for me in IE9, both with and without compatibility mode (browser). The article has unusually wide sortable tables. Perhaps this is a problem. Location Error

I created this article called Teunis G. Bergen Elementary School, a school in New York. Then, when I was putting the geographic location using that GeoHack thingy, I put 40° 40′ 42.74″ N, 73° 57′ 58.88″ W. However, when I put it on the page and clicked the link to test it out, the location that it showed was 40° 40′ 42.74″ N, 73° 57′ 58.88″ E, having the original West at the end of the coordinates changed to an East. So then, I decided to just put 40° 40′ 42.74″ N, 73° 57′ 58.88″ E, and then when I clicked the link, it showed up as 40° 40′ 42.74″ N, 73° 57′ 58.88″ W, the correct place. International Autograph Auctions

I am trying to put a page onto the site, I have now been deleted 3 times and upon each occasion I have asked for some help as to why however the individual who has deleted me has not replied to any of my questions. Having used other pages as templates and followed your guidelines with specific reference to links and references I can not see a good reason why the contribution can't remain. Is there anyone who can help or are you guys just there to remove pages? Radavie (talk) 09:34, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Radavie. Is the article in question Ian Sayer? In which case, it may have been previously deleted because it lacks sources - there's a huge amount of information, but only one source is provided, and there are no inline citations at all. Misplaced Pages content has to be verifiable - everything stated in the article has to have been previouslt published in a reliable source. Without such sources, subjects are judged to be non-notable, and thus not eligible for an entry in Misplaced Pages. Adding sources to the article and citing them in the article text should ensure that it doesn't get deleted again; certianly he seems notable from the article content. Yunshui  09:41, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
I think he's talking about International Autograph Auctions. This was speedy deleted because it seemed to be blatant advertising, which isn't allowed on Misplaced Pages. Articles on businesses need to be for non-promotional purposes, which means they need to be worded neutrally and meet the notability standard, and usually, the article shouldn't be created by an owner or employee of the business. Do you think your article met these requirements? Equazcion 09:46, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
It seems that the page was "International Autograph Auctions". (I've therefore retitled your question accordingly, from "Help".) I quote, pretty much at random:
International Autograph Auctions have established a well deserved reputation for the authentication of material, the quality of material, realistic estimates and consistently high levels of sales with most auctions achieving between 85% and 95% of lots sold.
That sounds like advertising blurb to me. You'd have to demonstrate the near-impossible: (i) that it has a reputation for all these things, and (ii) that the reputation is well-deserved. Each assertion would require one or more disinterested, reliable source, and the source(s) for the latter would have to be independent of that/those for the former. Better skip the "well-deserved": Has it established such a reputation? If so, let's see the source(s) for this claim. You can work on the article in your sandbox; when you think it's ready, ask other editors to take a look at it.
But are you perchance related to International Autograph Auctions? If so, better read "WP:COI" -- and whether or not you are related, better read "WP:V" and the pages to which it links. -- Hoary (talk) 09:50, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I see that you put a lot of work into the article "Ian Sayer", which is highly laudatory but virtually unsourced, and which interestingly says He is currently a consultant to Europe’s leading specialist autograph auction house, International Autograph Auctions Ltd , the British based company he helped to establish, with autograph expert Richard Davie, in 2005. -- Hoary (talk) 09:56, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

I wondered about your request for help. I found it, at Talk:International Autograph Auctions. It's interesting:

This page should not be speedily deleted because it is based exactly on other pages on the site such as Christies, Sothebys, Alexander Auctions and Kenneth Rendell. I have copied the format exactly from existing pages and simply can not understand how if this page is not permitted others are? I would love some help with regards to how I can phrase this so it is not an advertisement but no-one has been prepared to do this, could you possibly help me with regards to this as I am becoming increasingly frustrated? I understand that, if we are breaking a rule, we will be removed but when I have basically copied other pages and substituted words then this is unfair.

First, it's not just a matter of copying an existing format. (Indeed, it's not just a matter of copying an existing anything, as other stuff may be crap: see "Misplaced Pages:Other stuff exists".) You need to present material from/with a neutral point of view, and your assertions must be verifiable.

Secondly, I'm interested by your use of "we". Why do you say "we"? -- Hoary (talk) 10:06, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Our advice in such cases is invariably to leave it to uninvolved editors since it will be nearly impossible for you to write with neutral point of view which is one of our core content policies|. Your edit to the article was saved, but it was reverted by another editor a couple of days later. Please read the information on copyright on your talk page. I strongly suggest that you do not edit the article directly yourself, but restrict yourself to making suggestions on the article talk page and leave it to others to decide whether and how to include them.
I also note that your post suggests that two people are editing from the same account. This is strictly against Wikipeida rules, see WP:NOSHARE. All edits must be attributable to an individual person for licencing reasons. SpinningSpark 12:32, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

The film was directed by Neil Burger and was the Box Office No 1 in both the UK and US, taking in more than $160 million worldwide.

Leonard-Morgan completed the soundtrack for the upcoming film ‘Dredd’, directed by Peter Travis (Vantage Point) from a script by Alex Garland (The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine), and starring Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby. Dredd is due for worldwide release in September 2012.

He graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Leonard-Morgan has worked with artists including Snow Patrol, Belle and Sebastian, Craig Armstrong, Texas, Nada Surf, The Young Knives, Mogwai and Joy Zipper.

Leonard-Morgan has collaborated with ex-Belle and Sebastian cellist and singer Isobel Campbell on all her albums, including her Mercury Prize nominated album Ballad Of The Broken Seas, on which she collaborated with Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees). Most recently Paul worked with Mogwai on their latest album “Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will”.

In 2005, Leonard-Morgan was commissioned to compose the music for the official launch ceremony of The Freedom Towers, the designs that will replace the Twin Towers at Ground Zero.

In 2007, Leonard-Morgan was selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) to compose a new US Olympic anthem, previously scored by composer John Williams. The anthem was launched at the US Olympic headquarters in Colorado Springs on September 11, 2007, with Leonard-Morgan performing it live at the Colorado Springs Concert Hall.

His album, Filmtales, was released in 2008 to critical acclaim and features collaborations with Isobel Campbell, Richard Colburn (Belle and Sebastian), Steve Mason (Beta Band), Esther O’Connor and Jenna Gibbons (Shapeshifters). It also features the US Olympic Anthem, Glory of Pursuit.

As stated above, you need to make the suggestion at Talk:Paul Leonard-Morgan. Furthermore, you will need to support the suggestion with references to independent reliable sources. Finally there is a difference between {{Request edit}} and ((Request Edit)). The shape of the brackets is significant in Misplaced Pages syntax. David Biddulph (talk) 15:17, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Why did you remove Forward "a generic term for socialist movements"

I want to to know why you altered/deleted the "generic socialist link" of Forward on your site?

It was up there yesterday. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.237.184.67 (talk) 14:28, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

You can check the history tab for the article Forward to see what edits have been made, by whom, and what edit summaries were provided. I'm not sure those will answer your question in a useful manner as there seems to be some edit warring, at least one AFD (discussion at Articles For Deletion), and enough acrimony that it makes me want to get a ten foot pole and stand twenty feet back. I'm sorry I can't be of more assistance. RJFJR (talk) 16:10, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

How do I change an info box from "politician" to "philanthropist"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by DanWalter (talkcontribs) 16:03, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

What article are you looking at? RJFJR (talk) 16:11, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
There is no infobox specifically for philanthropists. You should use the generic {{Infobox person}}.--ukexpat (talk) 16:12, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
However, if this individual is in fact best known as a politician, this might be a serious mistake. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:17, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
From response on the OP's talkpage the article is Harry Lonsdale, which uses the infobox politician template but lists occupation as businessman. (It's gone through quite a number of edits in the last two days.) RJFJR (talk) 14:28, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
{{infobox businessman}} was just a redirect to the generic {{infobox person}}, but is now deleted altogether. He ran for senate three times so {{infobox politician}} is probably appropriate in any case. SpinningSpark 15:16, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

HI THERE. IN APRIL 2010 SOMEONE PUBLISHED AN ARTICLE ABOUT MY HUSBAND JANKO KONSTANTINOV.

IT IS LOADED WITH PROFANITY AND OBVIOUSLY AN UNEDUCATED TWIT WROTE IT.

The article Janko Konstantinov first appeared on WP in July of 2010. It remains a stub, but I can find nothing in it that should be objectionable, and certainly nothing with profanity in it. What am I missing? Bielle (talk) 17:44, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
This is the encyclopedia Misplaced Pages. Are you referring to some other website or publication? See Misplaced Pages:No legal threats. That sounds like a good guess. The profanity at the site has nothing to do with Misplaced Pages. The site has a false "CONTACT US" link which leads to Misplaced Pages but we are not responsible for that site. I don't know how you can contact them. They also make a false claim to be a Wikimedia project by displaying http://bits.wikimedia.org/images/wikimedia-button.png. It can damage the reputation of the Wikimedia Foundation and I will contact Wikimedia's General Counsel. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:44, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

    My picture question

Hello, I have recently received a warning on my talk page for adding a possibly copyrighted image. I am keen not to be doing this, but I fear I am misunderstanding how to find pictures on Flickr which are fair use? That image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ambertq/2956069887/sizes/l/in/photostream/ claims to be creative commons licenced - is this not ok for use on Misplaced Pages? Please let me know as I am keen to have a picture of April the Tapir on the article, and I don't want to infringe copyright or get any more warnings if possible! Thanks! Hello Anthony,
If you look at the below flickr image info box, you will see that it is unfortunately not allowed to upload a picture licensed with CC-BY-ND in Commons. --GoPTN 17:54, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Just to add, the ND means No Derivative, which is not an uncommon (so to speak) license, but is not compatible with Misplaced Pages, as our goal is to have material than can be re-used.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 18:00, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
To follow-up, because that image was a nice one, I have had success, on occasion, talking to the photographer and getting them to change the rights. If you let them know it is for Misplaced Pages, and their name will show up on the image page, they might be willing to make the change. That particular image is available in multiple sizes, so they might be willing to change the license for one of them to a conforming license. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 18:05, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

    RfC Help

It seems helpdesk questions are brief so I will keep mine brief as well. I'm wading into new territory for me, as I've never made an RfC before, and I want to make an RfC, but first I'd like to work with an Admin 1-on-1 to a) get their feedback on whether an RfC is appropriate, b)framing it succinctly which I am having trouble doing, and c)if kosher, talk with me about my specific concerns before posting it. It's about Misplaced Pages policy, touching on a lot of different issues: WP:AfD, WP:EVENT, WP:NOTNEWSPAPER, WP:MMANOT, and has devolved into a complicated mess, with a lot of players but without inappropriate user conduct (for the most part). There seems to be no online admins with a "dispute" checkmark at WP:HAU except for one who is slightly involved. Can someone drop me a line on my talk page? Apologies if I am not using the help desk correctly. Mreleganza (talk) 18:09, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Copyright Questions About Article and Photographs

    To: Help Desk,

I am a digital artist and have a several questions about the copyright on the Dorothea Lange page and her photographs that were published in Misplaced Pages. Let me give you the information first about my problem that my questions will be based on.

Two years ago in March during Historical Month for Women, I wrote a post with photographs, using Misplaced Pages as my resource( here is the link that I used: http://en.wikipedia.org/Dorothea_Lange ) and published it on my blog about Dorothea Lange. I wrote it in my own words as to not plagerize the author who wrote the article in Misplaced Pages or to plagerize the works of Misplaced Pages that are published concerning the photographs of Dorothea Lange. At the bottom of the post, I added two links from Misplaced Pages to give Misplaced Pages the credit for where the article was found, where I got my information, and also where the photographs where found that I placed in the post.

Here is the link to the post that I published on--1artgirl (talk) 19:56, 2 May 2012 (UTC) my blog site about Dorothea Lange: http://freetrinketstreasures.blogspot.com/2010/03/march-is-womens-history-month_25.html

Here are the links I put at the end of the Dorothea Lange post to give Misplaced Pages the proper credit concerning the article information and where the photographs were located:

    article: http://commons.wikipedia.org/Category:Dorothea_Lange pictures: http://commons.wikimedia.org/Category:Dorothea_Lange

I posted this two years ago and since then I have become a member of Digital Whisper.ning and our group will be publishing our first edion of the Digital Whisper magazine at the end of this month. When the administrators of our group sent out a call for art work to be submitted for publication, I sent four digital art pieces to them that I created from 9 of the photographs from the Dorothea Lange post that I published in March 2010 (link above).

When I sent the art work to them, I had to get the links of the 9 photgragh to also send to them so that they can credit Misplaced Pages as to where I got the photographs to create my art work as well as to identify that the material I used to create the art is in public domain and copyright free. When I looked up the links to the photographs, I discovered that the page had been modified and that over 2,300 pictures that didn't exist when I published the post, exist now and with more inforamtion about copyright concerning ownership of the photographs. The photographs that I used for the art work had the Creative Commons logo and are also established by the Library of Congress as being in public domain.

As I understand this---freely licensed media is within public domain and can be used for personal use, right? As I understand your policies concerning copyright, I read that photographs established in the Creative Commons files and also from the Library of Congress are in Public Domain and are for personal use. Am I right about this? So by these two definitions of the Creative Commons and Lbrary of Congress, the photographs that I used were okay to alter in digital form and can be sent for possible publication? Or by personal use, does this mean tht I can use the photgraphs for personal use but as far as sending them for submission to be published would change the personal use into a different catagory of commercial use and gain and therefore prohibited by the copyright laws of Misplaced Pages even thought they have the Creative Commons and the Library of Congress logos and both say they are in pubic domain? In other words, can photographs used from public domain sources be used for commercial gain without harming the copyright laws of Misplaced Pages?

And what about the photographs that are filed under the links: http://en.wikipedia.org/U.S._National_Archives_and_Records_Administration and http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/fsa1998018448/PP/ under the U. S. Farm Security Administration? Are the photographs also in pulic domain and also copyright free and therefore available on Misplaced Pages as for personal use and or commercial use, as in my case using photographs to create art work to be pulished in a art magazine?

My second problem with the photographs I used for my art work from Dorothea Lange is about what I mentioned in the above paragraph about the material being updated a year after I wrote the post. Two new links was posted to some of the photograghs,(1)owner of the Dorothea Lange slide ngatives: U.S. Farm Security Administrations, (2) U. S. National Archives and Records Administation. I read that most of the images from both of these government places are classified as in public domain and for personal use but proper credit must be given to the NARA and the FSA.

So have I understood these policies correctly? Also what kind of personal use are they referring to in their description of public domain ad non-restrictions of images? Does this mean that even if they are catagorized as files coming from the NARa or the FAS as long as they are in the Commons Creative files they are in pubic domain and are copyright free and therefore to be used in personal use or as in my case to be published in digital altered art form in a art magazine?

Can you look at the public use information identified in the description of the 9 photographs that I used for my art work and let me know If I have yoru permission to use them in digital art and for publication? The Digital Whisper administrators want to publish my work but they are in question of the copyright of the photographs that I have usd. Can we get a clear, cut answer from you that it the 9 photographs I used are in public domain and cpoyright free and can be used for personal use or commercial gain to be published in the Digital Whisper Magazizne? Of course, proper credit would be given from where each photgraph came from and links probvided for any information used from Wikipdeia. They also want to publish the post I wrote along with the pictures that I posted with the article concerning Dorothea Lange. Will you look at the post and tell me if this can also be published in the Digital Whisper magazine with credits going to Misplaced Pages as well as proper credits to the photgraphs used?

Here are the links for the nine photographs that I used for my art work:

Thank you for taking your time to read this and please let me know what your policies concerning this type of problem and if the copyright will be violated if the material above is published. Kym Decker--1artgirl (talk) 19:56, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

I will answer the Dorothea Lange part of your request first and then take a look at your other requests later,
    • All nine of the images you have listed are claimed to be public domain on their Commons pages. You can use public domain material however you see fit, although it would be polite to say where you got it.
    • The text of Misplaced Pages article is licenced under CC-BY-SA. Read the page for the full conditions, but basically you must do two things if you use Misplaced Pages text. You must credit the authors of the article and you must licence your derivative work in the same manner. Crediting the authors is commonly done by providing a hyperlink back to the original article. If you cannot provide a link you can find a list of the contributers on the "history" tab of the article (which may be very long). However, if you have only used Misplaced Pages as a source and written in your own words then there is no copyright issue, although you may still want to list Misplaced Pages amongst your sources. Note that the links on your blog do not go to the Misplaced Pages article. They go to the Commons category page for her.
    • I do not understand what page you mean that has 2,300 photographs. It sounds like a higher level Commons category. Can you link to it? SpinningSpark 22:57, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

--1artgirl (talk) 03:15, 5 May 2012 (UTC)TO: SpinningSpark THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION ABOVE: Yes, you can link to it---first, click on to this link: http://commons.wikimedia.org/Category:Dorothea_Lange and then go down the page to this: Subcategories: This category has the following 2 subcategories, out of 2 total. (previous 200) (next 200) This is where the 2,300 files are found in 200 images per page!!!!!Thanks for answering so quickly!!! I appreciate that very much!!!--1artgirl (talk) 03:05, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

You can find the licence for any picture on Misplaced Pages by clicking on it. This will take you to the item's description page. Scroll down and either under "Licences" or "Permission" you will find the licence or a statement that it is public domain. Works by all US federal government employees made in the course of their duties are automatically public domain no matter which agency they work for. Images which are not public domain on Misplaced Pages are mostly licenced with a Collective Commons licence, the same as the text. But be cautious, there are some that do not have a free licence and every picture must be checked individually. SpinningSpark 23:08, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
] includes 2317 files, so yes, that's probably what the poster intended. That's a substantial fraction of her 3900 images in that collection at the LoC. Each one used should be checked, but the LoC cataloguing indicates the FSA images usage rights. LeadSongDog come howl! 05:25, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

    --1artgirl (talk) 03:15, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Lead Song Dog---What does LoC mean? What does it stand for?--1artgirl (talk) 03:08, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

--1artgirl (talk) 03:16, 5 May 2012 (UTC)MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT COPYRIGHT!! So in other words, I can use these 9 images as long as I correctly give a credit for each one to Misplaced Pages and also to where they came from for example: correctly give license #number if they are from the NARA, along with the link as to what page they were found in Misplaced Pages Creative Commons, correct?

Okay---so tell me about the FAS!! I don't understand what their copyright policies are as far as the slides of Dorothea Lange and the pictures that you have in that file of 2,300 that were stated as <This is a retouched picture, which means that it has been digitally altered from its original version. Modifications: Color added using the GIMP. The original can be viewed here: Lange-MigrantMother02.jpg.> Except for the Gimp part, the other FSA phtographs wre in black and white---still---the credentials say at the bottom of the page of licensing that (they have been altered from the original version) because the original version is on slide negatives so if they (the photographs found in the Creative Commons link in Misplaced Pages with the 2,300 and some other black and white images) have been re-altered from those slides then the images have to be considered public domain and copyright free, correct?

Also another question concerning the post from my blog that will be published: I didn't give but one credit and that was to Wikipeda where the article can be found (correct link: http://en.wikipedia.org/Dorothea_Lange and also? the person that wrote the article for Misplaced Pages) so where do I find the name of the person who published this article to Misplaced Pages and responsible for the information in the article so I can credit them properly? Also,I am confused about one other thing---What about the pictures that are not on the page of the article that I used from the Creative Commons section of images in the post? Do I credit each photograph from the file that I got it from (the page where the image is shown in the Creative Commons file) and then also the license number from the other files that contributed, for example: the NARA and also the FSA?--1artgirl (talk) 02:54, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

    Adminship questions

I have two questions about adminship:

    1. If an editor has read up on the RfA process and guidelines/criteria but is still unsure if they're ready for RfA, is there some sort of preparation? Like a peer review before FAC, but for people?
    2. Would it be dumb to request adminship if (assuming you passed) you knew you were going to have to take a long wikibreak/semi-wikibreak after becoming an admin?

I'm not planning on requesting to be an admin anytime soon, even though I asked the second question as though I were (I won't have regular internet access for the summer). These questions are, at this point, largely out of curiosity. Thanks for any input. - Purplewowies (talk) 00:37, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Editor review should serve your purposes nicely. I think if you just plan on being away for a summer that's no big deal, but in that case, why wouldnt you wait? Equazcion 00:42, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh, I would wait. It was just a random, burning thought/question that ran through my mind. Thanks for answering my questions. :) - Purplewowies (talk) 05:28, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Moving test page from my sandbox to mainspace

I drafted a new Wiki article using my user sandbox, then followed the steps to move the article to the mainspace.

There is now a redirect on my user sandbox page to the new article that I moved to the mainspace. Is this just temporary? I wanted to create a new standalone article in the mainspace, not just redirect it from my sandbox.

This is all the text that my user sandbox now contains: #REDIRECT Carl Bass

This is the page that I moved into the mainspace: http://en.wikipedia.org/Carl_Bass

    Talk page vandalism?!

Is it reasonable for someone to delete almost the entire content of my talk and user pages? Admittedly most of it could go, but it seems somewhat rude to me. Possibly has somthing to do with the fact that my user name is Kwerty and he's (or she's) set up as Kwerty2!!? Kwerty (talk) 02:52, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Seems odd to me, especially with no explanation in the edit history or on the page itself. You should leave a message on that user's talk page asking for an explanation, and if that doesn't work undo the changes. RudolfRed (talk) 02:57, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Special:Log/Kwerty2 shows the account was created 1 minute before it started the deletions in your userspace, and afterwards it posted Happy "The crap is gone" to Special:FeedbackDashboard/31649. It looks like either vandalism or a mistake where Kwerty2 thought it was their own userspace which was prefilled when the account was created. Ask them. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:30, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

    Committed identity

Is it possible to change a committed identity? As you can see from my userpage, I already have a committed identity, but I've changed my Misplaced Pages email. The current committed identity contains the previous email id. So I want a committed identity that would include my new email id. Can I change committed identity now? Does any policy or guideline prohibit change of committed identity?--SupernovaExplosion 03:39, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

You can change your committed identity at any time, but FYI, it should probably be something tougher to figure out than your email address... Equazcion 03:41, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

    Logging in.

Hi, I edited a page but I didn't realize I wasn't logged in. It gave me a warning about my IP address, are there "Dangerous Consequences" to having it publicly displayed?

    Dartpaw86 (talk) 11:11, 3 May 2012 (UTC)Dartpaw86

Don't worry about it. It's not important in almost all circumstances. If your ISP gives you a new IP address each time you connect to the internet, or you access via school or university or a corporate network or any kind of proxy network where the IP address is shared, then it's not going to damage your privacy - people may be able to tell roughly where the edit was made from, but there's no way to identify you without access to private logs from your ISP/school/college/company. If you have a fixed IP which is yours alone (which some ISPs will make available) then the edit might be traced to you (if there is information elsewhere online identifying your IP address), but most people don't have this.
But in practice, nobody is going to bother, even if they know your IP address. What use is it to anyone to know you edited an article on topic X? There are a vast number of IP addresses in Misplaced Pages's histories, and the very very vast majority of them haven't suffered at all from this. The only exception is that if you're breaking the law, or violating the policies of whoever's giving you internet access, they'll be able to locate you more easily.
You may be able in certain circumstances to have your IP address removed from the edit history; see Misplaced Pages:CBLANK#Partial_deletion and Misplaced Pages:Revision deletion. But normally this is not necessary. --13:13, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Occasionally a registered editor will edit while logged out. While not usually an egregious issue, there can be some concerns about attribution and privacy.

    • If you made an edit without logging in, you cannot go back and directly tie that edit to your account. If your desire to account for the edit overrides your desire for anonymity, you can log in, make a dummy edit, and add a note in the edit summary about the previous edit.
    • If you make a comment on a talk page without logging in, then your signature will include your IP address. You can log in and edit the comment by replacing the signature. Be aware that the WikiScanner tool will retrieve these actions from the database and record them at the Poor Man's Checkuser, thus connecting your username and IP address.
    • If you feel that the connection between the IP address and your username is an issue, then you can request that the edit be removed; see Misplaced Pages:Oversight#Policy and Misplaced Pages:Requests for oversight.
    • Misplaced Pages does show a message box when an unregistered or logged out user edits a page. This may not be obvious— as a visual reminder you can make the Save page button green when logged in by adding this rule to either Special:MyPage/skin.css or Special:MyPage/common.css:
/* Turn the "Save page" button green when logged in */
    INPUT#wpSave {
        background-color:#88ff88;
    }

    Collapsible option for navboxes

    Personalized editing dropdown boxes

Hello. In My preferences, in the gadgets tab, I have the option to "Add two new dropdown boxes below the edit summary box with some useful default summaries" checked, and I was wondering if it is possible to create another personalized dropdown box that contains different edit summaries. Thanks, JJJ (talk) 22:23, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

The code is at MediaWiki:Gadget-defaultsummaries.js. If you don't know much JavaScript then perhaps the easiest is: Disable the gadget in preferences. Copy MediaWiki:Gadget-defaultsummaries.js to User:TheJJJunk/Gadget-defaultsummaries.js. Edit it to add your own choices in the code to one of the two existing dropdown boxes (you can probably guess how). Add importScript('User:TheJJJunk/Gadget-defaultsummaries.js'); to Special:Mypage/skin.js. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:51, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

    Research papers

Are there any policies or guidance documents regarding adding of material from research papers into articles? The papers I am looking at are not medical related, hard science or maths. Dlv999 (talk) 23:38, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

The main policy would be "Misplaced Pages:Identifying reliable sources". The most important factor is likely to be whether they were published, and if so, by whom. Jc3s5h (talk) 00:01, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Did you mean copy it in verbatim? In that case WP:COPYVIO is relevant. Or perhaps you are concerned about the paper's relevance, in which case you might want to consider WP:UNDUE and WP:FRINGE. SpinningSpark 01:48, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
No intention to copy in verbatim. The papers are published, but one of the journals charges for publishing , and it is not clear that the Journal is entirely relevant to the topic of the paper. The second paper involved an activist organisation, again it was published, but I would like to find out what sort of policies are available to judge if the research is bona fida and suitable for addition to the encyclopedia.
Just on a side note, I read a lot of medical research papers at college and from what I know taking a single paper and reporting the results would not give an accurate picture of any particular research area. It would be relatively easy to cherry pick a single paper that would suite a particular POV but would not be representative picture of overall research. Dlv999 (talk) 12:06, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

If you are hoping to search the edit summaries of one user's edits, then this tool is the one you need. A search for "added wikify tag using AWB" won't work, though, because AWB uses wikilinks for parts of its edit summaries, and uses "tags" rather than "tag" when it adds more than one in the same edit. how to edit the title of Employees?

I would like to edit the title of Employees to Team members for the company -- Global Sources (in the box at the up right corner). But it seems Employees is a default (?) title as I have tried to change it though unsuccessful...

Templates only display parameters set in the template, not additions where the template is included. You could suggest the change at Template talk:Infobox company, but while key people might be notable and encyclopedic, it's difficult to see how employees would be. Dru of Id (talk) 04:57, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
In other words, the title you're trying to change is permanently set for all company pages, so you won't be able to change it. The title you want would be company promotion anyway -- companies have employees, while "team members" is more of a buzzword. It seems this user has been blocked for promotion anyway though. Graphics Questions

I have a picture of a bird that I think is better than the current picture used. I don’t want to offend the person who took the original picture by replacing it. Is there a protocol used to evaluate the pictures and use one or the other by consensus, or do I just replace the picture? Also, I have uploaded pictures of birds before, and on them are the species name, date and place taken, as birds may look different during different times of the year, and in different locations. When I uploaded the picture with this data on it, someone edited it off of the picture (more than once). I feel this is important information that needs to be part of the picture, and not lost if the picture is re-copied out of wiki commons. Is there a policy about not having any typed data directly visible on pictures? BBODO (talk) 01:17, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, the preference is to not include any text on the photo, see WP:IMAGES. As for suggesting a new photo, I think you would upload the photo to commons, and then use the article's talk page to suggest a new one, and see what others think (or, just be bold and make the change if you think its better) RudolfRed (talk) 01:26, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
RudolfRed, I don't see anywhere in WP:IMAGES that says that, though I agree with it. BBODO, you should record that important information in the Image description page when you upload it. --ColinFine (talk) 12:20, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

    Misplaced Pages main page problem

    Dear Sir/Madam,

As a honorary user of wikipedia, everyday i check on the main page for interesting news and articles including the "on this day" section. Today is a world known day of Vesak Full Moon poya day. It is the day that Lord Buddha was born, became enlightenment, and passed away. Just want to know why such an important day is not mentioned in the "on this day" section.

Thanking you, Sanjaya.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.135.75.236 (talk) 02:11, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

The problem is that the "On this day..." section refers to historical events based on Gregorian calendar date. Vesak is based on the lunar calendar and falls on a different date each year. It is also a holiday, rather than a historical date and is not exactly appropriate for this section. --Daniel 03:25, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

That image has no licensing information and since you don't know its status, you are required to assume it's non-freely copyrighted. The 7-11-Simpsons photograph was uploaded by the person who took the photograph, so they were the copyright owner and therefore had authority to freely-license it or release it into the public domain. You have no such authority. There is also fair use, which allows us to use certain images even though they remain non-free and copyrighted, but you have to meet all of the requirements of Non-free content criteria and here, surely you cannot meet criteria 1 for no free equivalent, because anyone can go and take a photograph tomorrow. Therefore, a free equivalent could easily be created. In short, I don't see any way you can validly upload that image unless you have verifiable information that it is actually freely licensed or in the public domain.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:19, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

BIOGRAPHICAL ARTICLE WITH INCORRECT INFORMATION AND PLAGIARIZED MATERIAL

    Dear Misplaced Pages,

I re-edited and updated an incorrect and partially plagiarized article about me on your page. Your 'Editor', PBurka, deleted my changes (which were accurate, cited references, and contained updates about the last thirty years of my career, and removed inaccurate and potentially damaging material.) Portions of the original article were taken out of context from an interview on my blog and are potentially very harmful to me.

If you do not replace my changes and ask PBurka to please allow them to stand, I request that the entire article be removed. I do not approve of the material or the writing.

Very truly yours Nancy Beiman — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.23.254.221 (talk) 08:21, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

It looks like you have a conflict of interest here. There is no prohibition in editing articles about yourself, but there are restrictions. I see the article had to be tagged with a conflict of interest tag. AndieM (Am I behaving?) 09:07, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
PBurka added a {{COI}} tag and nothing else. Your writing is still in the article. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:03, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Edit conflicts with no conflicting edits

I've had this happen occasionally and never understood what's going on: I make an edit, get an edit conflict screen, and the only apparent difference in the "Differences" screen near the bottom is that one side has the code as my edit would have left it, and the other side has the code as it was just before I made my edit. This just happened at WP:AN — the "Proposed topic ban of User:DeknMike" section was getting long enough that I decided to add a three-equals-sign header to the bottom so that people could have a more convenient edit button rather than reading the latest discussion and then having to go all the way to the top. Accordingly, I edited the section, added the header and typed an edit summary, and clicked "save", whereupon I was presented with the edit conflict screen. The only differences between the two sides of the screen is that the left "Your text" side has a blank line below the bottom of the previous code, and below that, the three-equals-sign header that I was attempting to add. Why/how does this happen? ErrantX edited a different section of the page at apparently the same time, but (1) I don't see how that would affect anything, as I was just editing one section, not the entire page, and (2) if that would have affected it, why didn't his edit show up on the "Stored revision" side of the edit conflict display? I've gone back and completed the edit; the diff is exactly what appeared at the bottom of the edit conflict screen, except of course the addition is now on the right side instead of on the left. Go to the article on Colebrook, then click the tab at the top of the page which says "history". That page displays every single editor and IP address which has ever edited that particular article from its inception. If you wish to communicate with any of these editors, click the "Talk" link for that editor and leave a message on their talk page (but do remember to sign your edit by clicking the signature icon at the top of the edit window, or by inserting two hyphens followed by four tildes ~ ! --Orange Mike | Talk 15:12, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
Unless you need to discuss something with a particular editor, a better plan is to open a discussion on the article's talk page Talk:Colebrook, New Hampshire, so that anybody interested in that article will see your comments. Alternatively, if you have uncontroversial, referenced information to add to the article, just be bold and edit the article. I'm not sure if "one of the Historians" means some sort of appointment in the community: if so, you should read WP:COI as well. --ColinFine (talk) 17:52, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Moving a page from a "Misplaced Pages:" to a normal article

When moving my sandbox, I accidentally moved it to "Misplaced Pages" instead of a normal article and now there is "Misplaced Pages:" in front of my article title. I went back and moved it to just a normal article but now that is just a link to the page that has "Misplaced Pages:" in front of the name. The title of the article is Martyrdom in Iran. When you move a page, it by default leaves behind a Redirect that points to its new location from the old title. When you tried to move the article a second time, you apparently moved your sandbox (which now only contained a redirect to the Misplaced Pages: location) while you should have moved the article residing at Misplaced Pages: - don't worry, such mistakes happen to everyone, and they are easy to clean up :) I moved your article to the correct location in article space. -- Ferkelparade π 19:18, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

    Movie-'Amazing Grace'

In the movie of Amazing Grace, they use a tactic of going to parliment with a law unknown law called 'Lusus de kippier' (sorry spelling may not be right. Anway this law, which roughly translated means "we cheat" means they will approcach a bill being passed on ships which are French, but have an American flag on can not be touched, or searched, but if they pass a law saying those ships are falsifying their status ie: they are not American but French, then that would mean they could be boarded & their cargo checked. In this fashion it was said in the moive that they could bring about the down fall of the Slave trade. Now my question is: Is this a true fact? I can't find it in any of the synopsis of the movie? Please let me know if it's true? R. Campbell Posting the results on Amazing Grace movie page would be wonderful as I can read it there. help

    Hi

I have never seen a site more complicated than this

I did a google search for 'schools nicaragua' and I saw a link from[REDACTED] for schools

our school was not listed I wondered how to get our school into that list

    I created a[REDACTED] account

but..nowhere does it say how to get my website into the lsit

do I have to submit an article?

If I do, that is a joke,. nowhere can I finf how to do that. Lots of info on how to write it, ot edit it but now HOW TO GET it into wikipedia?

can anyone answer any of these?

Go to the page, click the button to edit it (the same thing you did to add this request for help here), and add it to the list in its alphabetical place. Is it a Spanish-language school? If so, put it in the list of Spanish-language schools; if not, put it up above. Put two brackets on each side of the name if it's not a Spanish-language school (just like the rest have), or if it's a Spanish-language school, do like the others: put one bracket, the school's website, the name of the school, and one bracket. Nyttend (talk) 00:49, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
I think that most people use the form at the top of the page to add a question and not the edit button. RudolfRed (talk) 01:31, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
Oops, I never use that form and didn't even notice it was there. Nyttend (talk) 01:52, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
That page is a horrible example of how things should look. External links should be kept to an external links section and not as used as a general list. If the schools are notable, we should have an article and a link to that article. If not, they should not be linked in the way that they are. See point #2 under "Important points to remember" of WP:EL for what I'm talking about. Dismas| 01:36, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

    Complex numeric sorting question

    Resolved

The article List of United States rapid transit systems by ridership has a sort table. One of the columns is the length of the system. If you try sorting, it comes out alphabetically

    • 10 mi (16 kn)
    • 117 mi (187 km)
    • 16 mi (26 km)

because the cell contents are not purely numeric. So I figured I'd go in and add {{nts}} on all the numbers, easy enough. Except that the numbers are not hard-coded in the cells, they go through the template {{ridership}}, which is kind of ugly, as it takes the actual ridership and route length and produces a result with two numbers separated by | to populate two columns. Well, that template is used only in a couple of places and I thought it would be safe enough to edit it and call {{nts}} from there. Except that it calls {{convert}}, which is used all over the place.

I could create a fork, {{convert sortable}}, which passes its output through {{nts}} and modify {{ridership}} to call that, but as a programmer I don't like duplicating all that code. It seems that the real right answer is to modify {{convert}} to add an additional parameter which would force the addition of a numeric sort code. And maybe add some documentation to {{ridership}} while I'm there.

Do people agree with that approach? If so, where do I find someone with the experience and confidence in complex parser expressions to take on this change? Machups 02:34, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

{{convert}} has a "sortable=on" option which probably does what you need. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:06, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I might have figured that out eventually, but I guess I gave up on scrolling through documentation. I've made the change and it works nicely. Machups 19:02, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

If I have a redlink that is unlikely to ever have an article created at the target of the link, should that redlink be kept? WP:REDLINK says "Articles should not have red links to topics that are unlikely ever to have an article, such as a celebrity's romantic interest (who is not a celebrity in his or her own right, and thus lacks notability)." The problem I came across is the redlink is for a person having published a paper significant to the topic of an article. I don't know how to determine how "likely" it is that an article be created for that person, but on notability grounds it seems very unlikely. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 09:09, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

    UAE name change

On the UAE article, an IP changed all the mentions of Persian Gulf to Arabian Gulf. There are two reasons I'm not being bold and reverting it myself.

    1. I don't know the correct policy on this issue (changing names without consensus)
    2. I don't want to get dragged into a ugly naming dispute (and possibly an edit war)

Perhaps one of you can find the correct policy and either let the changes stay or revert them. Thanks, David1217 (talk) 15:34, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Looking through the geographic naming disputes I've run into before, the closest I can get you is Misplaced Pages:Naming conventions (geographic names) and Persian Gulf naming dispute; perhaps someone else can be more specific. Dru of Id (talk) 17:00, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
Per the article on Arabian Gulf, it could refer to the Red Sea or the Persian Gulf, "a body of water sometimes controversially referred to as the Arabian Gulf or The Gulf by some Arab countries" (→ ambiguous). I'd apply WP:BRD; revert the bold IP edit, drop a note on his/her user talkpage, and start a new section at Talk:UAE. If it doesn't find input you can always request for comment. benzband (talk) 17:41, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
I have reverted it all to Persian Gulf, as this is what Misplaced Pages calls that body of water. If the IP wants to get things changed, he should start by presenting his case at Talk:Persian_Gulf. Maproom (talk) 19:20, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Control image size, with a caption?

    caption

In User:DanDaniels/sandbox, the editor wants a caption for the first image (the ampoule on the right), but wants a smaller image. According to Misplaced Pages:Extended image syntax, you can have a caption with "frame" or "thumb" but not otherwise. There must be a way to do this, any ideas?--SPhilbrick(Talk) 16:37, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Sphilbrick, with "thumb" you can still adjust the size by defining the width in pixels. Thus ] would produce the picture you see on the right. To change the size just change the "px" value (minimum 1px). benzband (talk) 17:30, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
I knew it would be simple but thanks. Somehow, I decided that "thumb" and ""nn px" were mutually exclusive. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 17:46, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

    Proposed BLP deletion policy

Hi. I believe the article on Sylvie Etienne should be deleted as a BLP under WP:GNG (the only sources in the article are from the subject's own defunct website and I've not been able to find any reliable sources with Google). The article claims notability as the creator of that website, so WP:SPEEDY A7 doesn't apply. My question is whether WP:BLPPROD can be used on this article. The policy says that the article must have literally no sources so I think my question boils down to this: does writing the URL of a website that no longer exists inside a couple of ref tags constitutes a bad source (in which case I'll set up an AfD) or no source at all (in which case it can be BLPPRODded). Thanks for your time. Dricherby (talk) 18:48, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Of course, it might help if I gave the correct page. It should be Sylvia Etienne. Sorry about that. Dricherby (talk) 19:50, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
I felt that maybe the lack of replies meant my question was too technical for the helpdesk so I also asked on the BLPPROD talk page. It was suggested that, if in doubt, one should not use BLPPROD and this advice has now been added to the description of the procedure. I'm happy to count this query as resolved. Dricherby (talk) 16:28, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

    A Biased user?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to say this. After I made a minor edit to the grammar of this article I said in the Edit Summary that it was alright to revert it if there was a problem. I later checked my contributions page and, after a few other links, found that my edit was changed back by a user named Dofedave. Whilst they way it was reverted was perfectly fine, is a person watching a page with the same name unbiased in their views, especially when you check his User page. Is this allowed, or should something be done?

Duplicate article, how to deal with the talk page?

    Resolved

Hi everyone; although I'm an admin over in the German-language Misplaced Pages, I'm not familiar with many procedures here, so here's my question: I discovered that the very short article Balmfluh Castle, created in November 2011, was about the same ruin in Switzerland as the older and more comprehensive article Balm ruins, so I changed Balmfluh Castle into a redirect to Balm ruins - which, I hope, is the correct approach? This, however, leaves the talk page at Talk:Balmfluh Castle - what should be done with it? In the German Misplaced Pages, we would delete it (it only contains some standard templates, no discussion). Is it a Speedy deletion G8 here ("talk pages with no corresponding subject page")? Although I think the redirect should remain. Gestumblindi (talk) 19:16, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

There's no problem with keeping the talk page. In the event that someone needs to discuss the redirect itself, it's a place to do it. Things like Wikiproject templates can be changed to redirect-class, meaning they don't need rankings on the article quality scale. If there's nothing of value either there or in the talk page history, you can delete it as G6 - uncontroversial maintenance. D O N D E groovily Talk to me 19:24, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I changed the template to {{WikiProject Switzerland|class=redirect}}; if that's fine, then, well... fine :-) Gestumblindi (talk) 19:35, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

What is the HIPAA regulations on a teacher descussing a stundent with non teachers and useing the chillds name? I have a teacher that told me somethings about a couple of children in her class room, I am not a teacher or do I know the children in question. The teacher is also tell me problems in the class room about other teachers. The things she has told me has caused majoir trouble for the other teachers because she blames the students for saying them or blames other teachers but I know the information came from her. Her telling people private things about these people have caused some to be suspended from school and or work. I know there is a fine that the state applies to this type of problem. I did at one time work for the school system and I had to sign a HIPAA contract of privacy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.54.11.213 (talk) 00:18, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

List of ISBN codes for publishers

Hi, Is any one here aware of List of group-1 ISBN publisher codes? I am not sure where that information came from and how reliable it is. Anyway, does anyone here know of reliable online lists that map publisher names to the fragment of digits in the International Standard Book Number (and vice versa)? I asked here just in case, but it is in this context. Thanks. History2007 (talk) 01:50, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

List of group-0 ISBN publisher codes and List of group-1 ISBN publisher codes appear to be mostly the work of User:Sea Venom The List of group-1 ISBN publisher codes articles notes: "Data from published items by these publishers," so it appears the info might be gathered by someone looking at a published item from a publisher and adding the ISBN publisher code to the Misplaced Pages article. WP:NOTDIRECTORY might apply, but it could be that the lists may be valuable information sources (WP:LISTPURP) (e.g., List_of_group-0_ISBN_publisher_codes has been viewed 1270 times in the last 30 days. On the other hand, one editor noted in January 2010 about the List of group-0 ISBN publisher codes, "Isn't listing 7-digit publishers, publishers anticipating publishing 10 or fewer books, a bit ridiculous? If the list was ever completed, it'd just be a monstrous heap of trivia." -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 05:33, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
Actually I am not interested in the ISBN codes for Harvard University Press, but just those for the Vanity presses so I can write a program to generate a report about the use of their books across Misplaced Pages, in the context of Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Wikipedia_reliability#Reliability_of_self_published_books. So I wanted to know if someone has an idea where to get those 50 codes or so, and they would not even be on that page, but just in the Misplaced Pages:List of self-publishing companies, etc. History2007 (talk)

According to that Facebook page the group's "action" started on April 21 and is scheduled to end in two days - has anyone even noticed these "occupiers"? It's also quite telling that out of more than 300 people "invited" only eight bothered to confirm participation. Such a small number, active over such a short period would inevitably struggle to be noticed above the everyday "static" of routine vandalism. IMHO it rates as a fairly miserable failure! Be careful to write the username with a space and lower case m at commons:Special:UserLogin. If I enter "Peter morrell" with a random password then it recognizes the username and says "Incorrect password or confirmation code entered". If the username doesn't exist then it says "There is no user by the name". And be careful to write the password correctly. If your browser has stored it at the English Misplaced Pages then you may be mistyping it at another place. Can you log in here by typing the password yourself? If not then use Special:PasswordReset. But according to the automatically-generated dates in this section, you asked for help at 17:07, I replied at 16:24, and you thanked me at 17:27. I can think of two explanations for this, neither of them plausible:
    1. Your system clock is 59 minutes fast, and Misplaced Pages's software foolishly believes it, but only for the purposes of the page itself, not for the page history.
    2. Someone is altering the timestamps on your contributions by 59 minutes, and their alterations aren't showing up in the page history.
I wonder if anyone has a better explanation? Maproom (talk) 21:39, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

What "ratings have dropped"? Roger (talk) 17:29, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
Reducing the number of templates is the only way to fix the problem. There are a few apparently simple statements that have been burdened with a whole lot of references. One statement - the first sentence in the "Depression" section - has nine citations! Cutting them down to two or at most three per statement would significantly reduce the total number of templates in the article. Roger (talk) 18:30, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Novice editor here. Just found a large anonymous omission from an article.

    Resolved

Yes it is tawdry and perhaps pedantic but I found a large section of an article omitted by an anonymous user (just an IP address). Omitted was a well sourced section of the page for Steven Tyler. I say well sourced because Steven Tyler himself admits to as much as it was stated in the "Family and Relationships" section before the omission. The omission was careless as well, leaving an orphaned sentence from the previous version (references Holcomb ...which was the main target of the omission.)

As a new user I am not comfortable making any of these changes...I was able to search the article history to find the removal. I am not certain of any other reversals. I am not versed in identifying the appropriate link either. Below are the links I believe show the relevant information.

This link from the article's history shows the article just before the anonymous omission.Article before omission.

Also The user contributions shows just this omission as the only activity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mavaction (talkcontribs) 02:41, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Puzzling "new messages" notice at IP address

This past weekend I called up the article "The War" (Ken Burns) and was surprised to see "You have new messages" alert at top of page. I couldn't figure out how that was possible. I clicked it and found that this IP has a talk page, which surprised me, since I have not done any editing from this IP. The message was new: I have been accessing WP articles occasionally since December 2011, but the new-message alert had never appeared on my screen before this past weekend. I have been the only user at this IP since the beginning of December. The message was dated October 2011 and was a warning about an act of vandalism from this IP at the article Avallo, also stating that all the vandalism had been reverted. I had never heard of the article/topic before. I clicked the signature-link at the end of the warning, left a message at the sender's talk page that I was surprised by the message; that attempts from this IP since December to edit minor errors in punctuation, syntax, and spelling had each been rejected because of an "indefinite block"; that I had no idea what Avallo meant; and that the vandalism had not come from here. Some minutes later another "New message" alert appeared after I had returned to a WP article—it was from the same editor, who pointed out that the original message had been sent in October, that there was no record of a block of this IP (if there had been one, he said I would not have been able to edit a reply on his talk page and I must have been using a different IP), and that it had come from this IP, and that if I was reading it only now it was to someone else using this IP. I accessed the "contributions" link and was shocked by the entry (first, it's not my style! and second, I hadn't done it.)

Question: what would cause an old "New Message" alert dated October to suddenly appear this past weekend, and how is it possible that any vandalism was done to the cited article from this IP (or possibly was falsely attributed to it even with your safeguards in place) since I have been the only user and had never done anything to the article Avallo? (I still haven't accessed it.) I wonder if a virus is at work? or maybe a hacker/pirate/vandal/whatever? Whatever the reason, I thought you should be alerted to this occurance.

—I see from "Show preview" that Avallo now appears in red, which I understand means the article does not now currently exist on WP, and the (talk) link at the IP user page for this IP address has also turned from blue to red, so apparently there have been some changes since this past weekend. In any case, I wanted to be helpful and constructive, and alert you to an apparent problem. Respectfully, 75.162.4.130 (talk) 04:49, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

    • As much as you might think you are the only user of the IP, you're probably not. Most internet service providers reassign IP addresses as needed, so most likely several other users of your ISP/institution have been assigned the same IP that you are using. It is quite likely that one of these other users has been vandalizing pages. The only way to avoid this problem is to sign up for an account, which guarantees you're the only one using it. Your answer is much appreciated. Thank you. For the past 2 hours I have been struggling with another technical problem from the Misplaced Pages server having technical difficulties. After trying 10 times (so I've been told) to submit the question and always getting the same message about the server having difficulties, please try again in a few minutes, I laboriously re-copied the question (which is physically painful for me and time-consuming), then exited out of the system in hope that this move might by-pass the problem in some way, then accessed WP again to try to submit it in hope the problem had been corrected after 2 hours of frustration, and immediately found the message "You have new messages (last change)". I clicked it and was appalled to read the message that said I had submitted the question 10 times and would I please stop! and that my question had already been answered! Nothing on the screen, during the 2 hours when I was hoping the problem would be resolved, indicated that it had already been submitted and answered. After reading the message I submitted an explanatory answer to that help-desk editor's talk page with deep regret and sympathy, then came back to this page and read the answer. To all of you who suffered from the technical problem generated by the WP server you have my deepest sympathy. I am so sorry for you and me as victims of the machine and of electronic "progress". (Isn't there any way of correcting this defect?) Meanwhile, I will take your recommendation and sign up for an account. Today. Thank you. Respectfully, 75.162.4.130 (talk) 08:43, 8 May 2012 (UTC) Here we go again!—technical servers are experiencing problem, please try again in a few minutes—there is no way I'm going to do THAT again! 75.162.4.130 (talk) 08:58, 8 May 2012 (UTC) And, to add to all this, an edit conflict too! (Misplaced Pages hardly seem worth the trouble.) Respectfully, frustratedly, 75.162.4.130 (talk) 08:58, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
I think they are implementing an update to the Wikimedia software, and that is what causes the technical problems at the moment. --Saddhiyama (talk) 09:09, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

There are several things I'd like to say here, First I know your pain !! :)

Next, the fast workaround for your problems with the technical difficulties is to use additional tabs (windows on your browser). when you want to edit, do not click edit, right click edit instead and open in a new tab, then write and attempt to save. When you get the error message, return to your original window/tab and right click page history and open that in yet another window/tab. Check if it has saved, if it has, that's great. If it has not saved, make sure you have allowed it 20 seconds between your first save attempt and opening history, if it looks like it has not saved, you can usually refresh the error message page and it will usually ask you if you would like to resend the information, to which you answer yes. then you wait the 10-20 seconds and see if it has saved in the history tab.

To copy the sections, or guard against losing your text, click anywhere on your text then hold down the Ctrl key and press A and release, which highlights all of the text, then hold Ctrl and press C which copies all text into the clipboard. If you seem to have lost it a moment later with the clicking, edit the page, click in the edit window, hold down Ctrl and press V, the text should be pasted in.

Next, for the messages, if it is actually true that you IP has made edits, then the first most likely cause is that your IP was re-assigned to someone else for a while after you switched off your computer, and then reassigned to you when you switched back on, or even more likely you were given a fresh IP someone else had used to edit wikipedia. These IP's are called dynamic IP's, if it is irritating, just sign up and sign in, that fixes the problem, the other alternative is to ask your Internet company for a static IP, then that IP is just for you. An IP address usually allows people to see where in the world you are, but this is not always true.

If you have been getting messages whilst your computer is switched on and they arrive in the middle of an edit session, but they refer to editing your IP appears to have done, but you didn't do, you might be using a wireless network, or have wireless on your modem activated by default. That allows someone in close proximity to you to be sharing your internet, sometimes by accident, sometimes they know. If it bothers you because you live in a country where people are hostile or if you need to pay for the internet according to usage, then either deactivate wireless in the modem according to the user manual, or if the little (usually black plastic like a short pencil) antenna unscrews from the modem, just unscrew it and stickytape it to the side so you don't lose it. The wireless will no longer work.

If it persists or you don't have a network then there are other technical possibilities. People with basic technical knowledge can clone your IP and pretend to be you, and basically that occurs when you have upset someone with serious technical ability, or they are using your IP randomly and mean you no harm. They may be either doing everything remotely, or using your own computer to do it, having installed software on your computer or having tricked you into installing it yourself. The easiest way to make that difficult is to use a Live CD when you edit wikipedia, or just install Ubuntu for everyday use, it's easier and better to use than windows, a lot less hassle, and is immune to virus and malware for all practical meanings of the definition. These scenarios are not likely however, it will be most likely just your IP being reassigned, 98 % probability, and 2% your wireless is being shared (varies according to your home country). Other possibilities are only worthwhile considering if you are actually an interesting person to computer geeks, make up your own mind there.

The workaround for the error page[REDACTED] displays when overloaded should include help text indicating how to check your work using another window if the error message is being display by the wiki server because of actual technical issues. If it is being displayed to reduce traffic and bandwidth, then probably not, just a try again message would suffice. Penyulap 10:50, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

As for your question, I don't understand what you want. Could you be more specific? Or possibly provide a link to the page that you're thinking of. Thanks, Dismas| 07:26, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

    Symbol of Christian fish

In sharing this the best way I know how:

The focus is not the fish. The prophet Habakkuk asked, "God, why do You make me like fish of the sea; like creatures who wander as if they have no ruler over them?" This is the focus Christians have altogether missed. Useless on a personal level is the Christian explanation of 'signs'. These are the 'lost' Jesus spoke of when He said, "Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men," Put your name in the symbol of one who was lost and is now saved in Christ.

For lack of a better way to express this, I want to thank you for taking a moment to consider the hidden meaning of the Christian fish. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.180.98.18 (talk) 07:23, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

    Numerical sort in tables

The sort button for tables works very badly for numerical entries. For example, 20 is viewed as larger than 1000 because the first digit of 20 (i.e. 2) is higher than the first digit of 1000 (i.e. 1). Isn't it time to find or to write a new sort function which will work for numbers as well as for words? I am looking for a kind of suggestion box rather than a FAQ, but couldn't find one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Topdown bottomup (talkcontribs) 08:02, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

    Can you provide a specific example? Ruslik_Zero 11:56, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
That's not quite the case. If the field has characters, e.g. 30 miles and 100 miles, it will treat everything as text. if it has just numbers, it will treat them as numbers. see Help:Sorting for more info, including solutions when you do have a mixture of text and numbers. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 13:14, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

    Error message

Maybe someone who knows where to ask can ask if the error message is being used to throttle traffic, or if it is simply an error message, in which case it could be improved with a short message suggesting opening a new tab, then selecting the original page from history (and updating it) to check to see if the post was a success.

Actually, after my last long post, I got the message as well. (same with the one and only Great Orange Pumpkin) Penyulap 11:01, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Free labels in Infobox don't show up!

Hello everyone. Actually I have a query regarding my article here Central National Herbarium. I have added some free labels to its infoboxes but they won't show up. Kindly suggest any workarounds any any type of constructive additions if possible. Vivek Rai (talk) 14:45, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

As far as I can see, Template:Infobox museum doesn't have parameters such as "free label 1" and "free data 1". The parameters in use by the template are shown on the template page. (And I've deleted your duplicate question.) - David Biddulph (talk) 15:07, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Why is editing on Misplaced Pages so SLOW?

When it comes to editing, Misplaced Pages is by far one of the slowest websites I've visited. Saving an edit often takes upwards of 30 seconds when other websites load large multimedia files in a fraction of the time. Speaking for Misplaced Pages editors in general, I think that much more could be accomplished if the website didn't crawl during each edit attempt. Is there anything that can be done to alleviate the issue? Thanks. --81.100.44.233 (talk) 15:17, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Acoustic transmission line (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

    Your question. Slapper4 (talk) 15:23, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

hi, i cant understand your help interface so im hoping this will get through

someone has vandalised the page on acoustic transmission lines, that i painstakingly built a few years ago. i added information about the difference and definitions of acoustic transmission lines and to reflex enclosures, and pointed to the fact that the only authentic retail product available was the SUHTL.

someone representing PMC, who in fact dont make transmissio lines, has deleted all that, fraudulently representing their product and reflex design as transmission line.

I met the cheif designer and his team at the UK national hifi exhibition 2005 and 2006 where we discussed TLs, and he admitted using the proper definition of a TL as invented by Bailey, theirs was a reflex and mine was a TL, so this is blatant vandalism

please review the edit history of this article, and the other refereces to PMC this vandal has created elsewhere.

if this is to the wrong recipient please forward on as i cant.

nick le feuvre B.eng (holder of a GB patent on TL loudspeakers with a special enclosure material)

Is the removal of this what you are referring to? If so, the entire section was unsubstantiated by reliable sources. I have left a note on the page that it is entirely unreferenced, and will try to find some experts in the subject to take a closer look at it. Ryan Vesey Review me! 15:36, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
Editing that you disagree with is not vandalism. Please read WP:Assume good faith, and WP:Content dispute. Claims that something "is the only authentic retail product available", and more importantly that somebody is "fraudulently representing" anything is permissible in Misplaced Pages only if an independent reliable source says so: otherwise they are original research, and the latter contravenes our policy on biographies of living persons. --ColinFine (talk) 17:34, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Music producer / Musician requiring uninvolved editor

Hi, my name is Ronnie Pollock and I am the music producer / artist who creates and releases music under the alises DySFUNCTIONAL and DySFUNCTIONAL RoTARY EnCODER.

I am requiring a wikkipedia entry to allow for the completion of my BBC music page found at the link bellow. http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/artists/c28db782-cbd0-4b0f-8465-0d8da5074fc5

DySFUNCTIONAL Has over 20 thousand people following on the website souncloud.com which cen be viewd / verified at the link bellow. http://soundcloud.com/ronniepollock

There are no online articles to add or additional information.

All that would be required would be a statment similar to " Ronnie Pollock from Glasgow, Scotland in the UK is a music producer / artist who to this day has over 20 thousand followers on the website soundcloud.com

The only source for this information would be my soundcloud page http://soundcloud.com/ronniepollock

Addtional info would be that to this date DySFUNCTIONAL has been supported / played on BBC Radio 1 Scotland by the DJ Ally McCrae A source for this info would be this page http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/artists/c28db782-cbd0-4b0f-8465-0d8da5074fc5

Not sure if this is enough for an article or that the sources are of a high enough standard really.

However a page is required and I do have a decent following a lots of comments and likes on soundcloud so my music is reasonably popular.

I suppose my question is can some please create an article regarding this subject?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.222.224.217 (talk) 17:06, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

If you can't find more/better online sources how about magazines or newspapers - have you ever been interviewed for an article about yourself? Roger (talk) 17:18, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
Misplaced Pages is not a mechanism for promotion or publicity. If you are notable by Misplaced Pages's criteria, then somebody (not you!) may create an article about you; but if nobody independent has yet written about you in reliable organs, then I am afraid the answer is no. --ColinFine (talk) 17:45, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
Someone "official" (WMF?) should probably inform the BBC that their "advice" to "go forth and post all sorts of crap on WP" is not acceptable. Roger (talk) 18:04, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
This is an encyclopedia, not a promotion website. Having a large number of soundcloud followers does not make you notable, especially since now all you have to do is pay someone to add people. - filelakeshoe 18:08, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
