Jozef van Wissem (born 1962 in Maastricht) is a Dutch minimalist composer and lute player based in Brooklyn. He has collaborated with James Blackshaw as Brethren of the Free Spirit, Jim Jarmusch, Tilda Swinton, Gary Lucas, Tetuzi Akiyama, and Keiji Haino, among others. Jozef van Wissem's track "The Mirror of Eternal Light" was featured on The Garden of Forking Paths, a 2007 compilation curated by James Blackshaw. After that, he released two albums, All Things Are from Him, Through Him and in Him and The Wolf Also Shall Dwell with the Lamb, with Blackshaw as Brethren of the Free Spirit.
Jozef van Wissem's solo album, Ex Patris, was released on Important Records in 2010. He released The Joy That Never Ends, an album with guest musicians such as Jim Jarmusch and Jeanne Madic, on the label in the following year. He also wrote a score for the 2011 video game The Sims Medieval.
Concerning the Entrance into Eternity, his first collaborative album with Jim Jarmusch, was released on Important Records in early 2012. The Mystery of Heaven, his second collaborative album with Jarmusch, was released on Sacred Bones Records later that year. The track "The More She Burns the More Beautifully She Glows" features a guest appearance from Tilda Swinton. Jarmusch asked van Wissem to score his upcoming film Only Lovers Left Alive.
