Suicide of Audrie Pott
LocationCalifornia, United States
CauseHanging
SuspectsThree 16 year old boys

Audrie Pott—sometimes shown in media as Audrey Pott—a 15-year-old student attending Saratoga High School, California, committed suicide by hanging on 12 September 2012. Her death has been attributed to an alleged rape by a "boy she'd known since middle school" and pictures of the alleged assault being distributed online, leading to bullying.

Pott's suicide and the circumstances surrounding it have been compared to the suicide of Rehtaeh Parsons, a young woman in Canada, appearing to show highly similar characteristics. New laws are being considered as a result of these events.

Background

In early September 2012, Pott reportedly went to party with about 10 other teenagers who were allegedly drunk. It is alleged that one or more of these teenagers raped Pott. During the alleged assault, photographs were taken and distributed via social networks and SMS. In the following days, Pott reported being bullied by those who saw the photographs. On 12 September 2012, Pott took her own life.

Investigation

In April 2013, three sixteen-year-old boys were arrested in northern California under suspicion of sexual battery to Pott.
